So when it comes to curry, Indian curry isn't really my thing because some of it is quite spicy - I much prefer Japanese-style curry, where the curry is known to be sweeter than it is spicy. I ordered the deep fried pork cutlet with omelet curry, a pretty standard curry fare. The portion was actually bigger than I expected to be and they were quite generous with the pork cutlet. The cutlet was very nicely fried, but somehow, I felt that its texture was not consistent - some pieces of the cutlet were really tender, whereas others were harder and needed quite a bit more effort to chew through. I really liked the omelet - it was super smooth and went really well with the rice, the pork and the sauce. However, the curry sauce was a little too spicy for my liking. Since it's Japanese curry, I didn't expect it to be very spicy, so I was certainly taken aback! But my tolerance for spicy is relatively low, so you may not share the same opinion as me. Overall, this is probably your run of the mill Japanese curry, but a little on the spicy side. I know Izumi has quite a few locations in HK - Tuen Mun, Shatin, TST etc so you're probably not too far from your nearest one. I believe that there is better Japanese curry out there though!

Turns out, we have very similar standards. Izumi is dimly lit, and uses a lot of dark woods in their interior design. The menu looks reasonably good, and I felt in the end that you do get what you pay for. It was surprising that the menu smelled a bit damp/mildewy, but that generally does happen to plastics in Hong Kong no matter what happens (it's this odd phenomenon that I still haven't wrapped my head around) I ordered the katsu curry rice set with an omelet, and I thought it was alright. The katsu was crunchy on the outside, but to my displeasure, seemed to be 50% pork and 50% pig fat- I could take a bite and it would either be a mouthful of pig fat or pork. The rice and sauce overall was quite good, the sauce caters more to the Japanese palate as you'd expect from the name of this place- i.e. it's sweet and mildly spicy, and they seem to use Japanese jasmine rice, so you really can't go wrong with those ingredients. The omelet (which was extra) was light, and fluffy, but considering how the curry itself was already sweet, I didn't really appreciate the sweetness from it. I probably won't order the katsu/cutlet curry again, but I am interested in trying out Izumi's take on a Japanese style Hamburg steak.

Word of warning there is a sizeable proportion of tempura veg in there, so meat lovers be warned (it doesn't bother me, but others might be irked by it).
