Hirekatsu pork curry, spice level 8
    Wendy S.

My partner-in-dine and I have always been die-hard fans of Japanese curry, specifically Coco Ichibanya's hirekatsu pork curry with spice level 8 plus cheese toppings and soft-boiled egg. Diving in mouth first into the euphoric world of Coco Ichi curry always makes me gastronomically please and brimming with love for all of humankind. Their curry reminds me that great food comes in all shapes and sizes, and the humble Japanese curry can achieve greatness in the eyes (and mouth) of a full-fledged fan. So it is with anticipation and a grumbling stomach that we made a beeline from the ferry terminal to Coco Ichibanya on Canton Road with our huge suitcases in tow. We braved the crowds of people that are always present in this thriving and busy hub of Hong Kong shopping mecca. I realized that I had been holding my breath the whole time and was only able to let out a relieved breath once we found the place. The menu was almost identical to the one in Japan. We didn't really bother with it because we knew what we came for. As we waited with barely concealed excitement, we inspected the interior and remarked how this one had a fancier interior than the ones in Japan. And then, it was time to meet our destiny...er, I mean curry. First, a visual check. It looked like the real deal. Next, an olfactory check. It smelled as good as the original. Finally (and most importantly), a gustatory check. And here was where the curry fell flat on its plate. The curry sauce wasn't as spicy as the one in Japan. The texture of the hirekatsu pork was not crunchy enough and, frankly, was quite bland. We came down from our high faster than you can say "curry". It was with this disappointment that we concluded that the original Coco Ichibanya in Japan is still the best.

Immediately after being seated, I took a look around the the interior, and spotted a Hitachino Nest Owl T-shirt! I asked and it costs HK$120. Quite pricey, hmm... But back to the food! You have option to choose your spice level, your curry soup base, and your meat / vegetable accompaniment. I ordered the level 5 coconut marathon chicken curry while my friend ordered a level 10 tomato-based hungry bear (with hamburger patty) curry. Both were SAMA-licious! I didn't need to order any extra veggies because the pepper, okra, eggplant, broccoli, carrot and half egg were pretty sufficient for me (a girl). If you're looking for quality curry, go to SAMA!

Located on the corner roundabout on Gough, this Sheung Wan hot spot (#1) has attracted quite a following to an otherwise quiet area of the neighborhood. Like most places in the city, SAMA is tiny. There are only a handful of tables to accommodate groups (which likely seat 20 at most), so I wouldn't be surprised if there were waits during good weather nights. The decor has a modern edge to it, along with the consistent corporate urbanized graphics one would expect from a Japanese chain. The staff speak English decently, but Canto is the way to go here. How the curry portion of the menu works: 1) Choose A Spice Level: Baby Bear (0-5), Adult Bear (6-15), Crazy Bear (16-30). 2) Choose A Soup Base: Tomato, Coconut, Prawn (Seafood flavor) 3) Choose A Curry Entreé: Chicken, Pork, Seafood, Vegetarian Options ranging $78-128 One can also choose additional toppings from extra meats (+$30), veggies (+$10), tempura (+$30), and eggs (+$10). The menu is available in English, Chinese, and Japanese. There is a nice selection of Asian craft beers as well as nice variety of sides. My group and I enjoyed a variety of curry dishes, with the most notable being the Oink Oink ($96) spice level 10 and Ocean Trophy ($108) spice level 15. There was one with the Vegetarian Bear ($78) but with a solid spice level of 20. The flavors are extremely potent and the spice is definitely no joke. I thought SE Asian curries gave me trouble, but the veggie curry had me feeling the sweat beads. I like the punishment. Our array of sides were also tasty. I enjoyed the Tempura add on, as well as the Curry Fries ($28), Shishitou Brussel Sprouts ($58), Hokkaido Spinach ($72), and Garlic Prawns ($72). I wasn't super crazy about the Spiced Chicken Karaage ($68), Hokkaido Corn Croquettes ($18), or their Nagoya Style Curry Wings ($28). A slight eyeroll to the gimmicky t-shirt and recipe books on display but I'm sure there are some serious fanboys / girls out there. Parking is limited but doable in this part of HK. They accept all credit cards and are open till just before midnight. ______________ (#1) Literally. No pun intended.

Chicken, beef, pork, and vegetable curries are available, as well as other traditional Japanese 'cafe' style dishes. THE THORNS: None to speak of. THE VERDICT: Great place for consistently good food when you're looking for a quick bite, and don't feel like 'taking a walk on the wild side', and taking your chances with the surrounding eateries, but don't feel like going to some western franchise restaurant. It looks kind of like the ones that are in anime. So I was surprised (I come from Toronto btw). I've ordered the grilled chicken curry with rice, and it tasted amazing. Their curry is not like the ones that I used to know. It is a bit on the sweet side. Service wise, they are pretty good. Theyve greeted us with a warm welcome and their attitude was pretty nice. Perhaps there is nothing such as good service in Toronto, so my standard became pretty low? Anyhow, it was my second day in HK. Let's explore more foods around the city.

I have wanted to come here for a while. It happened I am alone tonight and wandered around here. This is a good type of food to even eat alone. And they did design the place to serve some lone wolf, or lone tiger in this case. I have to say, the menu is not easy to understand. But soon when you figured out, it is actually not bad. I have picked the recommended Hungry Tiger to feed myself of my hunger. It looked kind of small, but it actually pretty filling. The Japanese rice is round and soft. Curry well cooked like he usual curry sauce, different from want the Sama curry at central, this is the traditional Japanese curry. Surprised that they did not ask for spicy level, probably not adjustable. The hungry tiger was actually only so so, I trusted that individually order would have been better. The problem with the dish is that they put fries on top. The fries are nothing special, but it fills you up, mob your rice and meat of the curry sauce and making it hard to navigate the food around. Chicken tastes good. Beef burger meat is ok. Pork was nothing special. The sausage taste okay but too little too few. And way add a bone back when sausage is designed to remove the bone. They serve beers and wine and sake. Probably best to avoid it. Don't think the environment is that targeted for alcohol. If you really want to drink, beer is okay, but standard Japanese draft is expected. Service is so so. Efficiency oriented. However, the food took longer than expected to arrive. Overall, I might come back but not too amazing.

Easy to order: the menu is basically a Curry/Tomato Sauce Choice + Protein/Vegetable + Sides Combo. They give you a LOT of sauce, so your rice will be swimming in the sauce, which is awesome actually, versus other more delicate ahem* stingier, Japanese curry places. The tonkatsu is solid and portions generous, the other meats are decent as well and you can add some vegetables (cabbage, corn etc) as sides if you are looking for fiber. There are full salads on offer, and full vegetarian curry is also possible, as my Indian friend found out (and liked); the fries are nothing special, save space for other stuff. I find the flavors heavier, tangier and slightly sweeter than the usual Japanese curry, which I like. I've tried all the other Japanese curry spots in Causeway Bay, and this is now the only spot I hit up if I'm craving for Japanese curry. A meal with a drink will set you back a bit less than HKD 200, not a bad deal for lunch/dinner in Causeway Bay.

I've only been here once and thought that the curry here was good, but nothing spectacular. If you know me at all, you'll know that I'm not a huge fan of anything spicy. So when it comes to curry, Indian curry isn't really my thing because some of it is quite spicy - I much prefer Japanese-style curry, where the curry is known to be sweeter than it is spicy. I ordered the deep fried pork cutlet with omelet curry, a pretty standard curry fare. The portion was actually bigger than I expected to be and they were quite generous with the pork cutlet. The cutlet was very nicely fried, but somehow, I felt that its texture was not consistent - some pieces of the cutlet were really tender, whereas others were harder and needed quite a bit more effort to chew through. I really liked the omelet - it was super smooth and went really well with the rice, the pork and the sauce. However, the curry sauce was a little too spicy for my liking. Since it's Japanese curry, I didn't expect it to be very spicy, so I was certainly taken aback! But my tolerance for spicy is relatively low, so you may not share the same opinion as me. Overall, this is probably your run of the mill Japanese curry, but a little on the spicy side. I know Izumi has quite a few locations in HK - Tuen Mun, Shatin, TST etc so you're probably not too far from your nearest one. I believe that there is better Japanese curry out there though!

#ThrowbackThursday - Remembering Hong Kong…read more.. Conveniently located at Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, we decided to have our final meal in Hong Kong at Daikiya Japanese Restaurant. It's a very solid all-you-can-eat option with two thick notebooks of pictured items to choose from. The raw and the cooked, the fish and the meat, the meal and the dessert... Sashimi - The usual suspects abound (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc.), but they also have hokkigai (surf clam), amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido hotate (scallop), and nishin (Japanese herring with roe). Served on a bed of ice and decorated with artificial flowers, each platter was well-plated... and delicious! Nigiri - There are plenty of winners here, but let's focus on the one that topped the list - Grilled Scallop with Crab Oil and Garlic. Seared enough to give that burnt flavor, dabbed with crab oil, then topped with roasted garlic... Need I say more? This was the highlight of our meal and, yes, my younger daughter and I had this over and over and over! Worthy runners-up - Grilled Flatfish and Prawn with Black Fish Roe. Rolls - An assortment of maki (sushi roll), temaki (hand roll), gunkan-maki (ship roll), and sashimi rolls was on the menu as well, but we were able to try only a few. The Mango and Soft-Shell Crab Roll was too small and had more cucumber than anything else. There simply were better options to be had. Grilled - Surf and Turf! Shrimp, scallop, oyster, lamb chop, beef, chicken, pork, and even pineapple. The best dish was the Sautéed Diced Beef with Garlic. Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium, these beef chunks were so tender and tasty! Dessert - Gotta save room for some (or all) of these - mochi, macaron, ice cream, tiramisù, brownie, crème brûlée, fruit, nut, and so on. We indulged in their special Milk Top, which had a limit of one flavor per person. We tried the Romantic Moment and Green Tea Harmony, which had soft-serve ice cream, red bean/paste, mochi balls, jellies, and rice crispies. The only way to cap off an AYCE! After restocking on calories, we were ready to head back to the hotel and then to HKIA. Daikiya was just what the doctor ordered to fill up our bellies before leaving. We totally enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong, but we had to wrap up our adventure. It was time to say goodbye... for now...
