This dessert place near the glacier is overcharged and the coffee gelato tastes just like water:(

There's a great selection of Asian dishes full of traditional flavor. I like the appetizer bar in which I got 3 dishes for $5. Their one-man hot pot looks good too and I'll come back to try that. This time for us, a group of 6 people shared some entrees and white rice. It's worth noting that some dishes are spicy although they are not supposed to be...I guess they just use the same wok for spicy and non-spicy food.

Ice rink is a nice touch

Since my daughter started school, (and when I say school, I mean the ridiculous HK school system that makes 2 year-olds attend to go to school without parents for half a day) I have been going to Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong a lot. I would park my car at the shopping center's parking lot and walk over to the school to drop her off. I must say that Festival Walk is really a good all around mall for shoppers. It's not dirt cheap low-end, but also not snobby high-end either, which makes it perfect for all kinds of peoples. It's much better than the ever under construction Discovery Park mall in Tsuen Wan and have much less northern influence (rude shoppers from mainland) than New Town Plaza in Sha Tin. What I really like is the parking lot. It is really spacious with many spots. $20 per hour is on the expensive side, but it is expected at a mall like Festival Walk. If you spend $600 or more, you can go to the customer service desk to get 2 hours free parking. Do it! If you don't drive, no worries. Just like many other malls, it is connected to the MTR station. Just get off at the Kowloon Tong station and get out at exit C.

I know Festival Walk got a bit of a bad rep after that 'torrential rain broke the glass roof' debacle, but it's got to be one the best malls for shopping in Hong Kong, for me. For one, it's so easy to navigate around and is virtually impossible to get lost meeting someone with all the good rendezvous spaces - The Glacier ice rink, the Food Court, AMC cinema, Taste, MTR exit/KCR exit, are just some examples. It may take a while to get your head around the escalators, but it's not as huge or as confuddling as Elements so I always feel like I know where my feet are when I'm here. Second, there's an ice rink. Many a time in my childhood was spent clumsily cruising by on my rented-out ice skates, or on the sidelines watching the old man who would skate there almost every single day. He even had a Facebook group, he was so popular. I'm not sure what's become of the old man, but I know that this corner of Festival Walk is still good fun, and a great child-friendly activity. The AMC cinema is also one of the better cinemas in Hong Kong, maybe not for anything movie-related like the soundsystem or seating (which is standard), but: that you can have nachos and siu mai along with your salted or caramel popcorn. Yum. The lovely range of cinema foods available might be because there's nothing outstanding with the restaurants here. Instead of something like The Menu at Sha Tin New Town Plaza (only two stops away, by the way), Festival Walk has a food court and a handful of good restaurants like Greyhound, Dan Ryan's, Rice Paper (Vietnamese), and School Food as of recently. If I'm looking to eat, I would head to Sha Tin instead. Shopping is mostly high-end fashion, but there is an H&M, MANGO, fcuk, and other stores of similar price range. I recently went to Oyosho here, which I think has just opened since I had never heard of them before. Oyosho offers some very affordable lingerie and cotton basics for bedtime. Definitely check this place out if you're like me and looking to update some faded Cartoon-covered pajamas...

Festival Walk is very convenient to get to by train - the mall is connected to the station so you don't even have to go out to the open (but then again that's how it is for a lot of malls in HK... we are so spoilt!) It's only one stop away from where I live, but Festival Walk is far from bring one of my favorite malls, one reason being that the place is a maze. Unlike most malls, the escalators aren't all in one place. For example, you might want to go three floors up from where you are, and you'll find yourself going up two escalators and then circling the entire mall to get to the third one. Once, I was there to catch a movie and about ten minutes before it started, I realized I wanted a drink and I didn't want to be paying exorbitant theatre prices - so I went down to the supermarket Taste. Taste is at the lowest floor where the MTR station is, and the cinema is at the third highest floor. This meant going four floors down, which doesn't SEEM like a lot. But it took me more than ten minutes to go down, buy a drink and pay (this didn't take long - was in and out of there in two minutes) and come back up. I tried waiting for lifts, which are tucked in a corridor where the toilets are. I waited for three minutes, got frustrated and just decided to go with the erratically-placed escalators. That's my main complaint with Festival Walk. There's a nice range of restaurants to choose from there, like Jasmine (a Chinese restaurant), King's Palace (serves congee and noodles) and Simply Life (a western cafe restaurant). Besides H&M, there isn't much shopping for me there because the shops are generally high-end. Overall, Festival Walk is in my opinion a very family-friendly mall. You could bring your kids out to catch a movie or ice-skate at the rink (or both)! The top floor is pretty much dedicated to children's clothes so you can stock up for your kids too. However, the layout of the mall is a pain and there isn't much shopping for me to do, so this really is just a three-star mall for me at best!

Chinese new year decoration!

"Excuse me. Do you know where the Sincerity Travel is in Mong Kok?"…read more"It is right next to Argyle Centre." As I was trying to get my student card ready, I was in Mong Kok trying to find that place but I ended up getting lost somewhere and had to resort to ask for help. The way he told me where that was made it sound like everyone knew where Argyle Centre was. Well, not for me. I seriously had no idea where that was. I just kept asking everyone along the way. Thankfully I made it. Turns out Argyle Centre is one of those malls for teens. I realized that teenage girls love coming here and I can tell by the number of people in this tiny little small here. You can see all kind of shops and I seriously do not think that any guys would come here as most shops here sell heels, accessories, dresses and basically women's stuff. So to be honest, I was literally the odd man out surrounded by all those girls. Anyway, the stuff here is extremely cheap. Well normally for guys, my shirt alone would cost me a few hundreds, but here a dress only costs around HKD$50. Wow! Are you serious? Well, design and taste aside... you can still buy lots of cheap stuff here. However, I believe everyone knows this place better than I do. I am so ashamed to call myself a local at this point. So if you are looking for decent clothes at a cheaper price, come here then.

Argyle Center is teenage shopping heaven. It's shop after shop and floor after floor of trendy…read moreclothes and accessories, all at EXTREMELY affordable prices. And I can't stress this enough - we're talking earrings for $10, shorts for $30 kind of cheap! Argyle Center is about a five minutes' walk from the MTR station. It's pretty easy to find your way - or you could just follow that group of teenagers in front of you because that's probably the way they're heading. The variety of things at Argyle is endless. You can find anything from backpacks with huge dolls attached to them to bags appropriate for you to bring for work - that's how much choice you'll have there. The mall is obviously catered to teenagers, but I don't think anybody could possibly leave here empty handed! Don't worry, it's not just all clothes and accessories - you can also find really fun novelty items and gifts there, like drinking games sets, offensive but funny cards and prank toys. If you're a fan of Korean pop music, you'll be able to find some shops that sell Korean celebrities merchandise like badges and posters. A word of caution though: some of the things here can be pretty tacky and cheap-looking - you'll see a lot of bright t-shirts with badly spelled words that make no sense and bags with so many studs nobody should be let within a metre-radius of them. But once in a while, you'll see a decent looking sweater or a necklace that doesn't look half bad. Most shopkeepers are willing to bargain, so you can get things cheaper than they already are! If there's a defect in something you want and it's the last remaining piece, don't be afraid to ask for a discount - you'll almost definitely get one! At all costs, do NOT come on a weekend because this place will be super crowded! You won't be able to browse much because you'll be knocking elbows with others who are trying to get a close look too, and it really just isn't worth coming on a weekday. Come on a weekday because there will be significantly less people! The key to shopping at Argyle is to be patient - you'll see some seriously tacky clothes, and you'll be bumping into other people because the mall isn't huge - but persistence is key! Poke around long enough and I'm sure you'll leave with a couple of good buys!

If you're looking for Vera Wang, you probably won't find it here. You can however, settle for her…read moremuch cheaper sister, Fera Wong (just kidding, not a real thing). Chinese knock-offs get a bad rap, but why the hell should you spend CAD $200 on your bridesmaid's dress when she'll only wear it once and it's probably ugly anyway?? Golden Plaza is the place to suppress those wedding budget anxieties with a little strategic spending. Going in for a walk is an experience in itself. Your eyes will get assaulted with all types of colours and sparkles that span 4 floors...and it's overwhelmingly glorious. I've been here on multiple shopping/pick up trips and I will always love coming back. I won't lie, some of the styles are less couture and more your Chinese auntie's version of couture. But look hard and you will find some really exciting stuff at unbelievable prices. Custom ballgown dresses seem to hover around the CAD $500-$1000+ range depending on what you want. You can get simple chiffon/tulle dresses for your wedding party at $60-$100 easily. If you're an online shopper, you might get lucky on Taobao, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for and the prices ended up being similar anyway. Talking face to face with the shop owner and being able to pick out colour, style, and material was the way to go. Other than dresses for every occasion at every price point, they've got a million varieties of shoes (customizable), real and fake jewelry, decorations, suits, photo studios, print shops...anything wedding related, they got it. You can't take photos of anything though, so bring a friend for consultation. Customized dresses take a few weeks to complete. We all know anything wedding related is suddenly inflated beyond belief, so places like Golden Plaza are a godsend. You might not want to get a wedding dress here, but what about 5 bridesmaid dresses? Bring in a picture of a $600 Jimmy Choo shoe, lower your quality expectations, and get it done for 1/10 the price. Remember, the essence of Chinese knock-offs is that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". And, of course, arguing your way to a bargain! My recommended stores: Lung Fung Night Dressing Co. Shatin Centre has always been like the little brother to New Town Plaza- its much smaller, its on…read morethe side and the shops are just a little down market compared to the big boss. This contrast has been made even further lately with the major renovations at NTP where Armani, Buberry and Bally are all present in a place where people used to come to get pots and pans. This is the reality of the new Hong Kong I guess. Shatin Centre, despite its makeover, is still the neighbourhood shopping centre with the large number of small, non-chain stores. Here you will find old shoe shops (the ones where we used buy school shoes from- if you grew up here you know what I mean), small jewelers who don't cater for oligarchs like the major chain these days. There is also a disproportionate amount of personal care product retailers here which I can only presume is a strategy of the management company. You will also find fast food joints, and just cheaper restaurants as opposed to NTP nearby. When I was younger I didn't care for such things as NTP just seemed the cooler and nicer place to be. Nowadays though, all shopping centres are identical and as such, malls with little shops like this place makes for a more special experience. You don't have to fight with tourists (as much) here because the shops here are just too low brow for them. Which is just like for a skint like me.
