4 stars for dim sum, 2 stars for the seafood.
I had high expectations given how much people rave about Lei Garden. I also really enjoyed the meals I had at the Elements branch. In the past, I enjoyed the veggies at the Lei Garden Elements branch which are much more reasonably priced than the seafood. Maybe it was because I hadn't tried the seafood here before but I was severely disappointed.
We got:
Cold crab - recommended by the waitress because apparently the other crab preparations would be too much food for us. It was fine but nothing special, just crab cooked and chilled. I would opt for some other preparation.
Abalone - I didn't like this, still had a slight fishy flavor and I had just had a much better version the night before. Skip.
Steamed scallop with vermicelli - It's on the specials sign, but I was overwhelmed by how bad it was. The scallop was supposedly fresh but it was dry and too chewy. The sauce was heavy handed and I had a much better version from the street stalls at Temple Night Market.
Liu Sha Bao - This is pretty good, perfect balance of sweet and savory, but not quite my favorite version.
Red date dessert - I really like this dessert, full of red date flavor.
Steamed dumpling with celery and other stuff - lol not entirely sure what this was, but it was pleated in a triangular shape and I really liked it.
Five spice beef - I had a stellar version at the elements branch, and while the one here was enjoyable, it wasn't quite as enjoyable as the one in my memory.
Soup of the day - I always love the soup of the day here, it's nice and light but still flavorful. Also not too expensive at less than HK$100 for the half size which is enough for 6 bowls.
The scallop, abalone and crab were all disappointing. The worst part is that the crab and abalone each were almost HK$400, more than US$50. That's ridiculous.
The dim sum is where they really excel. Stick with that. read more
