An interesting sight it is for plazas as such; other than the preassigned shops, there are also shelves and racks in the open area where people walk. Not only for vendors selling clothes and stuffs, even restaurants will set up tables and chairs in the open area. And actually they could definitely use these extra seats as the store is normally fully packed during mealtime. Truth be told, this joint is pretty much like all the other cha chaan teng that serves up various dishes including rice and noodles. Rice sticks and rice in clay pots are two of their specialties if memory serves me right. Instead of writing on the rice sticks, i think the rice dishes are more worth mentioning, not least they really taste good. To me, every good rice dish has to have a tasty sauce in order to make it good; for this shop, their signature braised chicken wings with mushroom and pork short ribs are so well cooked that the mushrooms are like sponges that absorbs all the flavors of the sauce and when you bite into the mushroom, it literally squirts; whereas the short ribs, they are totally cooked through and the meat just fall off the bones. The best part is the cartilage that turned translucent and imbued with the colors of the soy sauce. Needless to say, the brewing liquid amongst the fluffy rice would make the best possible rice dish; but what makes the rice dish even more special is that they would add pickled vegetables on top of the rice. The slightly tang greens add a sharp note to the rich an mellow sauce, cutting through it and makes the taste buds more alert. (Don't challenge me, at least that's how i felt). There you go a down to earth shop selling exceptional stews, that when serve on rice makes it even better. There is seriously a legit reason for them to set up tables out in the aisle... Looking for a place to eat in the Sham Shui Po district, we came across this local wonton mein…read more(noodles) joint on Pei Ho Street. The prices on the wall advertised wonton mein for $19 ($2.50 US) a bowl and wonton soup for $24 ($3.10 US) a bowl. There were quite a few people inside eating, so we thought we would give it a try. We are glad we did. You get three huge wontons in the bowl and quite a decent portion of noodles to go with it. The noodles were al dente, just the way they should be and the wontons were delicious. As a matter of fact, the wontons were the best of all the ones I have tried in Hong Kong. Will definitely go back again for more delicious wontons in the future.

You will find every part of a pig roasted to your liking - cha siu, siu yuk are the favourites around here. You will also see other meats such as chicken and goose too. Hei Hei is a restaurant that specializes in this. On going in you will be under no illusion this place is vegetarian, in line with our tradition their offerings are all hung on railings to show what they have. Some may find it gaudy but I find it very tasty. the typical set would be, say, cha siu with rice and you get to choose either a soup or drink to go with it. In my opinion I would just go with the soup for the total package (perennially its the green and red carrot soup; must have been in that pot for a long time). Prices are also very cheap considering what you get in return- you will not be able to find this in Chinatown (and even if you do, its just not the same stuff). Depending on your choice of meat there may also be some sauce to go with it as well. Forget that carbs diet you are on for now and tuck in. Its not fine dining, its not comfortable and service is acceptable at best. You also find that most people are munching through their lunch like they are in a race- welcome to Hong Kong's pace of life. But it is this combination of factors and uniqueness that you come to witness and why you should not miss out this great, tasty cuisine.

"The horror...the horror..."…read more That's what I thought as soon as the roast chicken arrived. The chicken was on top of a metallic basin with a rod stand attached vertically in the middle. Said poor bird was forcefully put through the rod, so that the end of the rod protruded out of the breast area. It looked like something out of a bad scary movie...or Doom. While there were some good aspects of the dinner I had here, plenty of it left much to be desired, and hence the lower grade. The theme of most of the food involved that night was this: tasteless. Everything surprisingly tasted bland. I expected spice. I expected umami tastes. I definitely expected "wok hei". I expected flavor. The roasted pork was absolutely disappointing. There was barely any meat, barely any layer of fat, and the skin was rubbery, not crispy. Oh and I did mention it was tasteless? Oh and back to the chicken. I ended up doing the carving and did a decent job, grace of God. They gave me one plastic glove to aid me in getting the job done. I could've moon-walked after that. While the chicken was tender as all get-out, it was, get this...BLAND. There was a flavored salt that accompanied the chicken and you needed to apply copious of that stuff to make seem somewhat tasty. The clay pot rice with Chinese sausage was decent but not amazing. Again, it lacked flavor. The sizzling pork knuckle in black pepper sauce could have used more flavor as well but it was passable. At least it was warm. There were raw oysters ordered but...raw shellfish at a dai pai dong??? Ummm...hepatitis, much? For me, the highlight of the entire dinner was the garlic shrimp, but because it was one of the only dishes that actually had flavor (albeit it was overwhelming garlic). The shrimp were cut symmetrically and cooked with a crapload of garlic. Yeah, I wasn't expecting to kiss anyone that night, so I just ate quite a few of those tender crustaceans. We were given a variety of desserts and they were a mixed bag. The fried taro/egg balls were amazing and almost single-handedly brought this restaurant up from 2-stars. Yeah, anything fried is good but these were brilliant. They came really hot and the outer fried section was crispy. Inside was half taro paste and half egg-milk custard. Both flavors were excellent. We also had a variety of herbal jellies and dessert rolls. The durian cream roll stood out the most, as you could imagine. I guess if you wanted to try durian, but were scary crapless to try the raw, unadulterated version of the sometimes reviled fruit, the roll would be a good idea. My relatives had reserved a VIP room, which was creepy-looking going up. I was concerned I would need to bring out my non-existent "particular set of skills" to protect myself from the nefarious. Maybe because we were given a VIP section (table, real chairs, in a room, tablecloth), the price didn't seem quite as impressive as I was led to believe. And I still needed to bring tissues too! Yup, it's not "where is the best dim sum" or where should we go. It's "where is the best roasted meat". As a result, from the recommendation of a couple taxi drivers we found ourselves here. At first glance I was worried to eat here because it looked like an actual hole in the wall restaurant so I was worried about sanitation. However, there was no turning back because my dad was dead set to eating that roasted chicken and pork. Even with my hesitation the food was really good and not overly greasy as I imagined. My dad and mom loved it and couldn't stop eating because it was just that good. After eating there it felt like you were actually experiencing Hong Kong because you were surrounded by office workers who were having a meal after work, families, and friends so it didn't give off a touristy feel like some other restaurants. It was still extremely popular because every seat was taken and my dad will likely come back on our next trip!

The restaurant is a "dai pai dong" style eatery. There is outside and inside seating, but it's not comfortable. You'll be sitting in a crowded atmosphere, often on stools, and things will be discombobulated. However, if you can get past this, you'll enjoy some delicious Chiu Chow food. I am a huge fan of Chiu Chow cuisine, especially since we don't get it in the US. Whenever I'm in HK, I make sure that I get my fill of it. At "Sang Cheong" -- direct translation of the Chinese name 生昌, you'll get authentic and traditional Chiu Chow dishes. My favorite is usually the crab and prawn balls which are fried to perfection and served with a sweet dipping sauce. Check out the mullet which is served at room temperature with a pungent bean paste dipping sauce. On the night of our visit, they had a soup laden with pickled sour mustard greens, pig intestines, pig ears and pork. There is an abundance of white pepper to kill the gamey taste from the innards. I don't mind the soup, but I can't eat the intestines. Fried Bombay Duck is a type of fish which has the texture of tofu. The flesh is soft and I absolutely love it. The Chinese name for this fish is "nine stomach fish" 九肚魚 and it is the first time I've ever eaten it. I'm hooked!! It is prepared salt & pepper style. Delicious! Roast Goose is the most typical of Chiu Chow dishes and the one here is decent. Dip into the vinegar! Food is good, and it's a great local experience!

We ordered a dim sum platter for two and the fried wide noodle. The dim sum was pretty meh but the noodles not bad. We paid about $40 usd which seemed pretty high for what we ate... But I guess the view is what we paid for. Plus 1* for their careful attention they pay to lost items- my wife left her sunglasses and they were super good about taking care of them until we can back to get them.
