Flan
Nick J.

This place is incredible! The cheese fondue was soooo good and the codfish was seriously some of the best I've ever tasted and the flan was a true Portuguese original flavor (photos attached). HUGE shoutout to the chef at this place and I was also very impressed with the server Claudio who was extremely attentive and made great recommendations! A great place for real Portuguese dishes, calm and beautiful atmosphere and a little distant from the "noise" at the Ribeira but close enough to be around it all.

Cozy upscale Portuguese food with great atmosphere and staff. We asked for two mains and they offered to split it, half and half, which was really nice of them. They recommended some great port and the food was delicious.

Signature dish - juiciest most tender pork cheek I've ever had w/ amazing pear in a multiple wine reduction with texturized potato chip

We had a quality meal here during our last night in Porto. It was exquisite and at a great price point. For an appetizer, two entrees and a glass of wine, we spent about 40 euros. I enjoyed the Bochechas de Porco Preto - (black pig chicks on a stew with old red wine with chips and vegetables) and the Mrs had the Montada Minhota - (beef steaks with corn bread and a withe young wine sauce , jacket potatoes and vegetables). The Montada was delish in its own right but the bochechas entree was out of this world. The meat was incredibly tender and the potato chips pairing with the a pear in wine reduction was beautiful. My jaw dropped and I held back a single tear from falling down my face. That GOOD! The ambience was perfect for a romantic evening or to enjoy a pleasant group dinner. Premium service by staff as well. Highly recommend!

Fancy restaurant off the beaten path a bit. It has two levels and makes for a great romantic and quiet date night. Food is very good and you have some fantastic choices. Our appetizer was a sautéed mushroom in a tasty port sauce. For our main course we had the goat dish for one. We passed on the bread and olives but even so, splitting the appetizer and goat dish was plenty for us. Did not have desert but did go down the street for some gelato instead.

While waiting for my companion to arrive in Porto, I had to dine alone two nights. I chose this place as it was near the flat we rented and had good reviews. The menu, when I arrived, was slightly different than the one listed on the website but not a disappointment. I was greeted awkwardly by a waiter who was heading upstairs to the dining room. As this was not my first trip to Porto, I expected this. It's not like in the states where there is a host waiting to seat you. People often expect you will just let yourself in... But not always. The rules are a bit grey for me. My waiter spoke English fairly well, enough to help me and be pleasant. He left me with bread and olives (if you're new to Portugal, this is not free, as it is in the states) which were very good. There was some sort of compound butter with truffles and parsley that was quite good. After a couple of minutes with the menu, he came to assist or put my order in. I was torn between duck rice or goat. He instantly lobbied for the goat, assuring me it was amazing. It came with rice, cooked greens, and baby potatoes. Everything in this country comes with rice, potatoes, and greens. Everything. They didn't have half bottles of wine but he offered just to charge me for a glass. (Then proceeded to pour me three) The goat was, in fact, quite good. Mixed pieces, be ready to dig for the meat. The star for me was the rice. Al dente, nutty, flavorful. So good. Greens were standard. Potatoes too. The wine was quite good. I can't tell you what it was, as is standard in Portugal, it was a vino tinto. Red wine. Blended from lord knows what into a round, bold, fruit forward happiness. I've learned to rely on the waiter for wine when I'm here because there's really just no way to know. I didn't have room for dessert. I do know that the table next to me waited more than 20 min for theirs and were quite annoyed. I don't know what it was, I never saw it come out and they were speaking Portuguese (which I speak none). Yes it's worth going. Service was good, food was good, ambiance was decent. I'd send someone here. Especially tourists who need a bit of hand holding.

Amazing! That's all I can say about éLeBê Baixa. If you haven't been here you're really missing out. My colleagues and I were in Porto for a conference and I had picked this restaurant after recommendations from a local friend. It was quite a trek, we had to climb up a steep hill and even steeper stairs to get there. By the time we reached we were starving and without reservations we were just hoping the restaurant wouldn't be overbooked. Luckily enough it wasn't and we were quickly seated and provided with menus. Within a few min a young man came out to our table and introduced himself as the chef. We were chit chatting with him and asked for recommendations. I decided to go with his recommendations and I had the meal of my life. Everything, from the starter to the main and dessert, was absolute perfection! It is not often you get to experience a meal this amazing. We had the bread basket with spread as a starter, which we shared among the table. For main I had the black pork cheek and finally ended my meal with a deliciously creamy pumpkin cheesecake. I will definitely make sure to make a stop here every time I am in Porto. Five stars hands down.

The food here was not that memorable, except for my main dish, which was the grilled octopus - so delicious! They also corked a port for us, which was pretty nice (we ordered a bottle at the restaurant and brought our own port too). The ambiance is very lovely for a nice date for two and the price was very reasonable. They were able to accommodate two babies and one toddler without any problems.

We read very favorable reviews of this restaurant, it was clearly a local favorite and we could…read morewalk to it from where we stayed on vacation. The focus here is on rotisserie chicken; they have other items but they're not the main event. It's very big inside, 2 stories and even early it's pretty busy. The chicken is well seasoned and very juicy; enough so that you know why it's So popular. Sides I can barely remember , but everything else was good- it's just that you will Always remember that chicken! Other than that, my only other clear memory of that dinner is that it was very reasonably priced. If I were in the area again, I'd return in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

As I came in on my own I opted for the one open stool at the counter. The restaurant was busy on a Monday early evening, about 5:30-6:00 pm-ish, with what felt like mostly locals. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.

We didn't have any problems with communication. It helped that they could speak in Spanish and my brother could speak it way better than me. The food was very good. All the flavors were spot on. All plates were wiped out. The ribeye, though, was not that tender. It was flavorful and the temperature was right, but it was quite chewy. So, if there is one dish that we wouldn't recommend, it's the ribeye. Everything else was great. The place is worth coming back to if you want your carnivore cravings to be satisfied.

We had plates to share and it was honestly all so incredibly good. Pork dishes, fresh chips, and these kind of truffle croquettes fried in squid ink. The prices aren't exactly cheap, however the quality and the ambiance of the place I'd say is worth it. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The location is also very central -- it was only about a 5 minute walk from our hotel near the Church of Saint Ildefonso. Would definitely recommend stopping in for delicious food and a great vibe all around.

So this place showed up on a bunch of lists of places to go in Porto, and for good reason - but I…read morewas having trouble finding the hours, so I figured I'd just get there around noon once I was in Porto, and ask. Around noon, someone did show up briefly to post a sign out front saying they were going to be opening at 12:45 that day (I asked out of curiosity; sounds like it's *often* 12:30, but it's really mostly a "they'll open when they want to" kind of place.) I knew it'd be the sort of place that would fill up immediately, so I got back at 12:30. At least that day, it turns out they still had 1 table left after they sat everyone there before they opened - that last table got claimed at 1, 15 minutes later. It's not a large space, and word is out for good reason. Given it's not a large space, it was also easy for them to have excellent service, which they did. You could tell they were all passionate about the place, and again, for good reason - it was great. Definitely one of the best meals we ate on that trip. Between the two of us, we tried: Complimentary bread and olive oil. One OMG fantastic, wonderful fish soup. The sort of soup you'd want to eat every day if you could. Croquettes that were pretty good. Enjoyable enough, perfectly crispy, a little too salty. Not nearly as memorable as everything else. The seafood rice stew for 2 - a description I always question ("for 2"), but true in this case. It was quite large - and great. Excellent shrimp, which I'm picky about. I'm even pickier about shellfish (clams, mussels, etc). I was expecting to give my wife most of them, but I did *not* do that. They really know how to get and cook the best seafood here. The rice at the top of the stew wasn't anything particular to mention - filling, though, and warming for the drizzly day it'd been that morning. The rice at the *bottom* of the stew, that'd been slowly cooking in hot stew the whole time, was *very good*. :D Wine-wise, they have like a hundred bottles of wine by the whole bottom, some very expensive, some *surprisingly* reasonably priced, but we also didn't need a whole bottle of wine with lunch - by the glass, they just had one red and one white house wine (also solidly priced, though, for a place like this, 6 euros (Be way more than that in the US. I had the red with the stew - solid.) Also a handful of solid-looking ports by the glass, one of which I had with dessert, a reserva tawny for 6.50 euros. After eating the stew, my wife tapped out. I was also pretty full, but I'd spent a lot of effort getting here and I was *gonna* have dessert, darn it. Had what was basically just a whole roasted stewed apple, cooked down until it turned to pudding. Super good. Went really well with a reserva tawny port. This place was great.

Luckily for us the restaurant was only half full so there was no need to wait (weekday at 3pm). Odd hours for popular restaurants worked out the best for us on this trip. Inside there were just 8 tables so I can see why this place usually sees long lines outside. It was quite cozy. Menu was straightforward with appetizers, seafood and from the country (aka meat). The octopus rice was so good. The strips of sliced octopus were very tender and the flavors of this dish were delicious. It was comforting on that cold and rainy afternoon. The salt crusted seabass selection was delivered the with flare all covered in flames. Our server ignored the flames and proceeded to crack open the salt crust, fillet and debone the fish. Full service! The fish was meaty and perfectly cooked. The side of potatoes and broccoli was addicting and I normally don't eat a lot of potatoes. We skipped dessert but the menu was tempting. Besides the fish service it would've been nice to have a bit more proactive attention from our server. When we requested our check, she pointed out that out that tipping was not included and waited until we completed the transaction. Would return for the food next time in Porto.
