I had an excellent experience from start to finish with warm, attentive service and food that really showcased classic Bavarian cuisine done right. I loved the historic feel of the restaurant because it added so much character to the meal and made the experience feel authentically Munich. Everything felt polished but still relaxed, and the vibe was lively without being overwhelming. BEYOND AMAZING for so many reasons!! I loved the location. We were able to sit outside and enjoyed all the people passing by. Our server was hospitable and his suggestions were excellent, especially when it came to ordering dessert. The food was served quickly and was hot and beyond delicious. We have been in Germany for a week and I have enjoyed schnitzel every night. This was one of my favorites. The wild cranberry is worth the trip. This area of Munich is a rowdy place. Loud. Obnoxiously packed with people. Down a little quit street, around the corner sits this gem. Similar Brauhaus offerings are here and they taste similar. Here it is quiet and peaceful. Service is great. The food was excellent. Low key, low stress, elegantly served faire. The schnitzel was great. The star of the show however was the Kaiserschmarrn. Large portion that was so good. So many different textures and rich almost fried bread pudding flavor. This is the place to go when you've had enough beer halls. read more

On our last evening we wanted to finish out our 2 weeks in Germany with the local cuisine. We have enjoyed some amazing local dishes but this place really let us down. The best part of the evening: - the beer and wine -sitting on the patio - the Nürnberger sausage plate. The rest was mediocre. The cordon blue lacked flavor and had very little cheese. The pork knuckle was tough and flavorless. The Apple strudel was doughy with not very many apples. The service was poor. A disappointing end to a wonderful trip. Oh my goodness we had SUCH A GOOD MEAL at this place. We were in Munich for only a few hours so we had to cram in as much local specialties as possible in as few meals as possible. We also happened to be in Munich during Oktoberfest so shit was on the busier side. Fortunately, we were able to snag some real estate on one of the tables inside without waiting. We both ordered a beer hastily and it was good but I do wish the size of the glass was larger. GF ordered the sausages over a bed of sauerkraut and she says "I thought it was very good". I sampled the sauerkraut which was exquisite. I ordered the cheese noodles which were BETTER. THAN. SEX. I wanted to stop eating it because it was so heavy and in the interest of having room for pretzels and other German shit but I just couldn't. I wish I could tell you the names of these things but their menu is not available on the website and I am unable to find it. In fact it was exactly what our second to last dinner on vacation called for. Great German beer. Awesome Vienna Schnitzel (veal) and great pork filet. Sitting amongst the locals on the picnic table row was great. If you're looking for an authentic German dining experience look no further. We finished off our experience with their Apple Strudel. Came here looking for a spätzle/käsespätzle experience to make sure we covered Bavarian specialties. Zum Dürnbräu did not disappoint!! The most luxurious decadent dish and I was weirdly obsessed with the salad dressing they used. Underneath the salad was a surprise bit of cold potato salad which some may find odd but I'm here for it all! In true German style, service was direct, quick, and to the point but still very kind. We were a party of ten and had a person in a wheelchair with us. No ramp, no help whatsoever from staff. Inside the restaurant nearly impossible to navigate with a person of special needs. About 20 guests had to get up to move two benches out of the way for us to get through. A very unpleasant experience. Aside from that and something we did not realize until later, the clientele was about 95% men and what seemed to us as part of right wing national fractions of Germany. Long story short: DO NOT COME HERE AS A TOURIST. Our friends were seated five minutes before us, and were threatened to be kicked out if we didn't show up soon. The place was packed. We ordered four dishes: ente (roasted duck), schweinshaxen (pork roast), sauerbraten (pot roast), and saure breznknödel (bread dumplings). I could not stand the bread dumplings, but the duck was not bad. Nothing special. I would have rated a 3-4, but the service was absolutely abysmal. Any time we tried to get any kind of service, we were always told "one moment" as the server rushed off, and no one would ever return. We asked for waters, were offered flat or sparkling, and received sparkling when we asked for flat. Then they charged us for it, along with included tip. When we were paying, my friend was physically pushed to the counter to pay, and rushed to sign for the bill before we could ask about the additional charges. If you can avoid it, DO NOT give these people any of your business. read more

I read about Zum Durnbrau in the NY Times travel section which listed it as better than the average bavarian cuisine, which you can find all over Munich. The restarunt sits on a side street a few steps away from the street crowds of the tourist area. It has a large outside sitting area and an ivy lined backyard garden which would be great places to sit outside on a sunny day. Inside turns into a beautiful dark old restarunt with long wooden benches and tables. The meal started with Spaten helles larger and a complimentary basket of chewy pretzels. The Bread soup was delicious, a large crock of beef consume with a huge amount of crunchy buttery croutons and crisp fried onions garnished with chives. The salad which came with the snitzel was full of fresh greens, onions, shaved carrots, cucumbers and radishes. The creamy dressing was a compliment to the greens but did not overpower it with a subtle taste of thyme. Our mains were tender, juicy wiener snitzlel pounder thin and lightly battered in bread crumbs and fried. I could not resist ordering the calves head, which was different and very good. The pieces of the head are extracted and stuffed into a sausage, before being sliced, breaded and fried. At a glance the calves head sausage looks like 2 thin slices Italian fried eggplant, but once you bite into it the taste is out of this world. The texture of the offal is different with each bite. Chewey, gooey, soft and fim bits all come together in one amazing dish. Topped with a little a dab of creamy sauce and some lemon and this is a memorable meal. "Wunderbar!" Back in August, my coworkers and I were in the area, sightseeing, and wanted a place to eat. We googled restaurants nearby and this was a short walk from Marienplatz. As we came around the corner we were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and atmosphere of this local gem. The host asked if we had a reservation - we didn't. They had plenty of space inside for all 8 of us. We inquired if it was possible to sit outside since we saw a table that could fit us. The host inquired with the manager. She told us we could sit there but it would have to be a quick dinner because of another party who was coming later and would need that table. We all agreed and were more than happy to dine and take off. Later on, Fraulein (Ms) Claudia Zink, the manager, told us we could stay as long as we wanted since the group had preferred a table inside. Her and the waitstaff's hospitality, combined with the delicious food, beautiful Bavarian atmosphere made for an amazing evening. Ate here our first night in Munich and boy was it awesome. We wanted some authentic German food and beer, and that's exactly what we got plus a delicious apple strudel. They have English menus and our waitress spoke decent English. It's tucked off the main drag so it isn't full of tourist which was nice. This is a tourist trap. We were on training and were with a group, and were directed here by the hotel hosting our meeting. We got to sit at the big table and were served in a friendly way. Then, a basket of pretzels (a specialty from the area) was placed on the table. I ordered vegetarian, the semmelknödel which is like a meat dumpling, with mushrooms as I am vegetarian. I found a bone, in one of the dumplings. Fortunately I found it with my knife while cutting, otherwise it would have been in my mouth and I could have broken my teeth over this ! The servant explained it could be a bone from the animals they cut next to it. Way to go for a vegetarian dish to explain it like this.. I was compensated with a cup of tea, if it were up to me I would have taken it off the bill because repairing teeth could have been a very expensive problem if I chewed on it. Moreover when we paid they asked us if we had the pretzels. We thought they were on the house, like a bread basket in normal restaurants. Unfortunately we had to pay every pretzel we ate, apparently they rip off tourists like that everywhere in this city. Overall the food tasted nice but these two issues makes it only worth a 3-star review. read more

I really, truly enjoyed by time at Zum Duernbraeu. I just sort of stumbled upon it in a hunger, having just flown in from the US. It really was a wise choice, and I highly recommend skipping past the mediocre Hofbrauhaus to come here. I ended up, as a solo person, at the long table with many strangers. My German is decent, and I enjoyed speaking with some of them. Many were beyond drunk, which to me is just a sign that the beer is good! I had a potato soup, which was good but unnecessary given the main dish I ordered - schweinshaxen. Yes, that typical Bavarian dish that is amazingly gigantic. I made it about halfway through before calling it quits. I wish...I wish I had been able to finish it. Oh so good. The beer came quick and was tasty. The service was surprisingly awesome. Really disappointing food. The sauerbraten was tough, dry cardboard. The sauce put the "sour" in sauerbraten. The red cabbage (Rotkraut) was bitter and sour. I had to mix a packet on Splenda into it so I could eat some. The bread dumplings were like tennis balls. And all for 40 euro! Pricey. For a much better meal go to Spantenhaus. read more

The potatoes that came with it were also pretty good. The pretzels were just okay though. My friend ordered these meat cake things (they looked like a crab cake). This is one of my favourite places in Munich. Small and tucked-away, Zum Dürnbräu feels like you are escaping the rest of Munich. There is even quite a lot of space to sit outside, but normally I just sit inside. This time the service was a little gruff but efficient. Actually hat doesn't bother me - I find it quite amusing really. The food is quite pig-oriented so if you don't like pork the menu is not for you. That being said I had Käsespäzleso no pig. The beer however was very good. I'm usually not a great fan of Spaten beer, but this was very good. read more

Very good little "German" pub food. Pork Knuckle was very good, and more affordable than others. The other menu items looked just as good. Reservations recommend, but they have plenty of tables outside in the front, and a private area in the back. The waitress was very nice, and the food was quick, even though they had a full house inside. Wish I was told about the place years ago. Definitely will go back the next time in Munich. read more

A bit of a disappointment. Mentioned in a couple of tour guides as a good place, but was perhaps the least impressive meals on my trip. I got the duck; meat was NOT "fall of the bone" like I would expect, was a bit dry and boring flavor. Service was good. Will not return. :-( read more
