I had never been to Z'Tejas before and I was pleasantly surprised! They have an incredible deal going on right now and I brought the whole family. Our waitress was a sweet heart and apparently they just remodeled the whole restaurant and it is an awesome atmosphere. We got a couple appetizers and the bacon cheese fries were my favorite. Happy hour at Z Tejas hasn't disappointed me yet. 3-6 happy hour half price margs, $5 quesadilla, $5 chips with queso guacamole and salsa. That's really why I come here. Service is always great. Me and a friend sat on the patio and the fans were just what we needed. If you have a large group (6 people) their patio has a nice "booth" for you all to gather. We came here and enjoyed lunch on a Friday. Service was attentive and it's very tastefully decorated (love the huge front door!). The food was incredible. I really enjoyed every bit of it. The queso was perfectly creamy and the cornbread skillets were such a fun surprise to receive! The beef barbacoa enchiladas were a perfect portion and I left just a little left on the plate after filling up from the rest of the meal. Z'Tejas has always been a favorite of ours however this las meal there was just terrible. Pretty sure this place has lost their mojo:( They did a remodel where they expanded their bar area. I understand why now because this place definitely is only somewhere I wanna go for drinks and maybe an app. We went for our big 25 year anniversary and I was super excited because this is where we always went for special days back in the day and we always loved it, but unfortunately this time not so much. I ordered the Gorgonzola with caramelized onion sauce steak with veggies and this one definitely miss the mark. Neither items were at all seasoned and were both totally bland. On top of that, the Gorgonzola on the steak seemed extremely old and they didn't even put caramelized onion sauce on the plate. Pretty sure they didn't even use a drop of salt or pepper to season the steak or vegetables. Plus the steak was a terrible cut with tons of fat and gristle. I could hardly eat any of it! It was like eating steak at a Denny's I didn't want to complain because we had a fantastic server, Marcileno, who was running around without any help. He told us they had understaffed that day, and he was doing his best to keep up with everything.. he was very attentive and though he suggested the steak, I don't believe that was his fault and it was definitely the chef. On top of that this place is supposed to be known for their wonderful very frozen margaritas and yet ours came out like wet slushy's. Sure they still tasted good, but just not what they used to be. My husband ordered the Diablo pasta. He said it was good, but he needed to spice it up with habaneros and add a lot of extra salt to season. It's rare that you go to a restaurant and the bartender really doesn't care if you get served not. The bartender spent majority of his time talking to old timer regulars and not serving his customers who filled the room. It felt very odd being a party of five in the bar area and not being waited on at all. We would have all had multiple drinks and ordered more food but the bartender didn't give us that option due to lack of service. I would drive out of my way to not go back here. read more

Starting with the service, we had a very friendly maitre'd and an excellent most-likely-the owner doing a bit of everything including running our food. Our waiter Hasan was absolutely incredible, friendly, and above and beyond from start to finish. The restaurant itself is well kept and clean, with a very beautiful wall mural. The real winner though was the food. The menu was full of excellent sounding choices, but our picks were so aromatic and tasted even better. From my chorizo meatloaf, to my mom's chile relleno, to our queso appetizer, everything was full of flavors, and a party in your mouth. We got two desserts to go, and they were equally pleasing. I don't know what happened to this place. There were four of us for dinner, three of us had been to this and other Z'Tejas' before. We don't know what happened. The food was mostly the same. It was fine. But, the decor. Ugh. They doubled the size of the bar and then, in our opinion, completely downgraded the dining room decor. The tables and chairs looked like IKEA. The furniture was light-colored, and bland. One person described it as a Chipotle with servers. I thought it looked like a Tex-Mex Denny's. That's not a dig, because I love Denny's, but it's not the Z'Tejas that I remember. After speaking with other people, the general consensus is that we didn't like the "vibe". And, if I can see the back of the Coke machine from the dining area, you're crossing the line into counter-order take-out. So, 2-stars for a Tex-Mex restaurant, 3-stars for a diner-style place, and 4-starts for bar. To sum up, I would not bring a date here. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant since 2013 when I moved to Phoenix. I go to this restaurant at least 3 times a month. The frozen Chambord margaritas are the best margaritas in the city. The catfish beignets and z salad yummy. They recently remodeled .,,it is so beautiful. We usually sit at the bar, but sometimes we sit at a table. I've even rented there private dining room for a party. The service is excellent. The staff are nice boy and it's , good place t to watch TV and catch some sporting games if your eating at the bar. I've been here a few times for hh but not for brunch. So, we enter and notice a child in the kitchen. Yes, a child about ten years old, helping himself to anything he could find. My sister asked the manager if this was a buffet and he explained it is the chef's son who is regularly in the kitchen. This is a no-no for obvious health reasons. Yet, we stayed, at least for a minute. Waitress took our drink orders, provided us water (with mine in a glass cup with a huge chip) and then the wait began. After fifteen minutes and no waitress, we left. On the way out, saw the bartender, with earphones, hadn't even begun our drinks. 5 star service! I walked in and was IMMEDIATELY greeted by the manager George. Per usual I sat at the bar and he immediately gave me menus and made me a frozen chambord (YES!). Lauren was my bartender and she was so sweet and nice. They got me my own little mini corn bread with butter (complimentary). For lunch I got the catfish beignet, SO good and fresh. Our first visit ever to Z'Tejas. Loved the look and vibe as soon as we arrived. Shared an order of catfish beignets with our table. SO good. I had the jerk chicken salad with sesame dressing. My new favorite salad! Every person at our table 9 people loved their meal! And their desserts! Snicker cheesecake amazing! The only criticism I will give is that the margaritas are in the smallest class I've ever seen for a margarita and it was chock full of ice! Couldn't have hardly any alcohol in it, because of it did in the small glass it was served in, it would be so strong you couldn't of drank it. So I can't recommend the drinks on the pricing aspect of such a small drink. And I ordered a Cadillac margarita. Went to dinner with my family and we had the worst experience. It took 25 minutes to be seated, 20 minutes to have the waiter come and take drink orders, the food took another hour and our drinks were forgotten. We don't get our drinks until we got our food. They must have been sitting at the bar, because they were watered down. The food was cold. Service was extremely slow. We had to go find the waiter to give us the check so we could leave. Hubs and I had a great experience at this restaurant. When we arrived, Hubs was on a phone call so I went in ahead to check on the wait time. The hostess was super sweet and explained there was no room in the dining area due to reservations but there was plenty of seating in the bar and patio areas. Hubs and I took the bar area seating. Bartender #1 was very friendly with getting our drink and food orders, including a side of chips/salsa to start off our meals. She was very fast with getting our refills. The manager brought out our entrees and was very friendly, joking with us that there was too much chatting and too little chip eating. Hubs got the Santa Fe Enchiladas and I got the Mushroom Enchiladas. Both entrees tasted great! Hubs enjoyed the slight spicy kick in his entree and I loved the sauce on mine. Our drinks were consistently refilled by bartender #1 and bartender #2. After we left, Hubs realized he left his phone at the restaurant. I called in and the gentleman who picked up confirmed he found the phone and was very pleasant to speak with. He was quick to greet me at the door on my return to get the phone. We love this location and should have reviewed a long time ago. We rolled up for lunch and were surprised it was closed on a holiday weekend. There are signs posted stating the landlord has taken possession of the building. I hope they are able to work it out. Good food and friendly service every time we have been there. Z'Tejas was one of our favorite Happy Hour restaurants. Unfortunately, they closed our location in SoCal years ago, so whenever we're in Arizona we make an effort to go. This was our first time to this location. It was fairly busy but we were seated right away. I ordered one of the "Fall Specials", Pumpkin Enchiladas. They didn't have a very pumpkiny flavor, but they were very good. My husband ordered the Grilled Ruby Trout which he enjoyed. Both dishes came with rice and beans. Mine were good, but my husband's rice had a weird taste to it. He likened it to a dirty dish rag and he didn't eat it. We finished the meal with Ancho Fudge Pie which was as delicious as we remembered it. Overall, the meal (with the exception of his rice), was very good. We enjoyed the chips/salsa (especially the green salsa) and the yummy cornbread. The Navajo Taco is a full plate of goodness on a puffed shell! The buffalo chicken strips had the sauce on them and I understood they did not, so will order something different next time. A good family outing to break away from the norm as we've started returning back to "dine-in" experiences before the summer. Sitting out on the patio was good as we arrived towards the end of the normally packed Happy Hour. It's been a while but some of the classics were ordered. A change-up with the cornbread... jalapeno but instead of a skillet it came almost in a cube-ish-log... still good. Family had the Z'Southwestern Caesar Salad, Z'Burger, Baja Fish Tacos, 2 orders of Catfish Beignets and Dumplings. I was thinking the fish tacos would be fried (like the catfish) to give some texture and crunch, but they were grilled instead. Decent, but I was hoping for better. The only disappointment came with the Chambord Rita's we ordered. I was pumped as these are my favorites, but when it showed up it looked more like a purple icy from Circle K!! When I brought it up they let us know that during the pandemic the margarita machine went down and getting it repaired has been a challenge for quite some time. When we left we saw the "backup machines" and yeah, it's looked like the ones in Circle K!!. Understandable, but disappointing from a drink perspective as these bad boys are always on point. I have not been to this place in many years, and now I remember why. Today I went for lunch because a group of friends set it up and I didn't have a say... I ordered the Breakfast Enchiladas off of the brunch menu ($14). They were very dry and tasteless. The potatoes that came with it were cold, dry, and also tasteless. I ordered a side of borracho beans ($5 for about 1/3 cup of beans). These were actually good, but not worth the price that they charged for them. The service was great. Our server was friendly, prompt, and efficient. The place did have a faint sewer smell to me, however. I will NEVER return... Stopped into Z'Tejas on a Sunday evening around 7 PM with a group of four. Even though they didn't close until 10, it wasn't very busy and it seemed as though they were getting ready to close. Instantly you notice the interior design refresh that was done very well. The space seemed modern, open, and clean. We also noticed the backlit menu which was a cool feature, and it seemed like they skimmed down the menu offerings as well. The menu seemed a bit random in what they offered and nothing jumped out as "must try". Meals come with complimentary cornbread, but unfortunately we pulled a long black hair out from the middle. It was replaced and the cornbread was solid. As for my entree, I ordered the shrimp fajitas. The fajitas were what you would expect and there was a good amount of shrimp although slightly overcooked. The service throughout the evening was not great --my water was empty for most of my meal and our server was slow to greet us in the beginning and my friend's beer took probably 20 minutes to come out despite the restaurant being fairly empty yet well-staffed.
