My favorite bar. The decor of this place really won me over immediately. The free goldfish and unlimited number of board games didn't hurt either. I mean, I get to play Jenga while I sip on a frozen zombie in an awesome backyard area. What more could one want? The bartenders are always friendly and the peach sweet tea is banging. Walked by hear the other night after dinner with the some out of town guests. Yada yada yada, stumbled home. Drinks are cheap and strong -hangover even stronger. I will say their outdoor seats are to be looked at closely simply because one of their chairs cut me on my leg when I went to the bartenders a lady bartender bandaged me up. She was very nice. Excellent neighborhood bar with a tiki theme that'll have you wondering: when did I get so drunk? Zombie Hut is great for casual nights out with competitive friends. Their cocktail menu dons drinks that all seem to pack a punch. Your average well drink is gonna run you about $5. They have board games to keep things interesting. And a whole outside area to continue the party. The bartenders were fun & engaging. Real down to earth and helped out with any questions we had. The crowd is real laid back and it never got overly crowded while I was there. Only disappointment was they don't set their shots on fire anymore, but I'd definitely come back if I find myself in the area. read more

Five dollar delicious tiki drinks on a Monday night? Yes please. Stopped in to Zombie Hut after the 'leet event because Bar Great Harry was filled with pub trivia lovin' fools screaming out obscure Michael Jackson songs (or something), and because, well, who doesn't love a good tiki beverage? Of course, you can order something fancier than a mai tai or a bahama mama and it will be a bit pricier, but really, I'm a simple girl, so bahama mama it was. And it was every penny of my five dollars worth of delicious. We found out as we were leaving that there is the most awesome back patio ever at Zombie Hut. Actually, the only thing that would make it better would be a (fake) essploding volcano. (I have heard such a thing exists at some tiki bars, so don't laugh at me). The bartender was nice and laissez-faire, the clintele were just there for a drink... the only thing I can really complain about is the really loud football on the TEEvee (say it with me like you're from West Virginia...). I get that it's football season and all, so I suppose that's okay, but minus one star for the sheer volume on the 'vision. I went there with 2 of my old NY coworkers, and some of her friends to the last leg of her re-birthday celebration...lol. It was dark, a lil crowded, but I could definitely tell early on that I was going to like this spot. So I think the drinks I got were Mai Tai: which was pretty good, The Zombie: (which is properly named might I tell you) It was really good. For those of you who don't know what a Zombie entails it's pretty much a strawfull of either bartenders choice or some strong concoction lol inside the cup that your actual drink is in. I thought I wouldn't want anything afterwards or even be able to handle anything but I actually ended up ordering the Grandma's Sweet Tea...it was sweet, nice tasting but strong enough...and got me beyond where I was tryna go..lol. By the time I got to my Grandma's Sweet Tea we were playing sorry...i remember seeing the board ..but I didn't remember playing until I saw the pictures..lol. The music was loud and awesome..i think I was deaf until later that afternoon..lol. Also they had like open space in the back kind of like a backyard with Christmas lights strung up everywhere. Pros: Awesome drinks, fun atmosphere that just encourages FUN!! Cons: There weren't enough picnic tables outside, and very little sitting room inside. The bathrooms were in short supply, I think I had to go twice, and I had to wait a few times, and usually there would be a person waiting when I left out. That's why the Zombie Hut is one star short of 5. Definitely not the place to go have a conversation unless you luck up on a seat outside. read more

One of my favorite bars in Brooklyn and not just because of its name. So, I'll make this quick because I have a happy hour to run to (of course). 1. It's great if you're with a group of people or whether you're with one other person since there's ample space. There's a great outdoor area that makes it awesome for birthdays or parties. 2. This is a fun bar on Smith st. that I hadn't ventured into until recently and now am thinking 'Why hadn't I tried this place before??' Oddly enough, after never coming here (even though I live in the neighborhood) I came here twice in one day. First time was for happy hour, which included delicious margaritas in their backyard on a sunny Friday when you just felt like everything was right with the world. Backyard was great - large enough to seat plenty of people and lots of trees from neighboring yards to create a nice garden effect. After meeting some friends for dinner we ended up coming back for beers in the covered part of the backyard. I know they have games too (cool) but we didn't ended up playing any of them that night. From my first experience Zombie Hut was fun. I came with a friend on a very late Saturday night around 2 AM.... It was kind of slow for a Saturday in my opinion but that's better for me. I didn't eat here but I did ordered the frozen zombie and it was awesome.... Minus the first sip which they warn you of (shot of something sits on top). But I love strong frozen drinks so it was awesome. The bartender was nice, the lights were down low. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to play any board games but I still had a good time. This place is really great. Their specialty drinks are really great and most times made really strong. The decor is of course tiki-friendly and it makes the place really fun. They have a really chill, relaxed back area to play board games or sit outside and enjoy the cool (or morbidly humid) summer weather. Definitely get the Frozen Zombie. It's really tasty and nice and strong. I also recommend their Mai Thais. Just 'cause they're good. And if you're not in the mood for Frozen Zombies or Mai Thais or gigantic bowls filled with liquor and six straws jutting out of them, the place also sells PBR which is a nice changeover. All-in-all, this is a great Carroll Gardens spot. I will come back always. read more

One of my absolute favorite local spots to grab a drink! The atmosphere is really cute - theres a tiki bar, a backyard which is great in the warmer weather and they always play good music. My favorite drink is the skinny colada. I never feel guilty throwing back a few (its really easy - they are yummy!) It's a fun date spot or even just a cool hangout for a group of friends. It's not super loud or over crowded where you are fighting for space, which is a nice change from some of the other local joints. The bartenders are very chill and super friendly. I never have to wait long for a drink - they are on top of their game. Speaking of games, there are a ton of board games that you can grab and play with friends. Who could ask for more? read more

As I am part Seattle-ite, and Tiki is no stranger in the Pacific Northwest, I thought Zombie Hut would hit the kitsch nostalgic spot. Not as dive or as tiki as I would have liked (too matchy-matchy almost CB2 style) but it's still a cute neighborhood spot for a drink and some fresh air if you get there early enough (the teeny outdoor nook fits about 12 comfortably.) The clientele early on seems quite local and friendly (the barstool patrons recommended several naughtily named drinks as favorites), as does the staff, which was an unexpected pleasure. I traveled the safe cocktail road and stayed on the vodka/tonic with cherry garnish ship, which was not so impressive- the tonic was a bit flat and the cherries were the tiny bottled too sweet style. (I know, it's a simple mixed bevvy, but some places have the flair to spice up something basic.)This seems to be, as others have mentioned, the place to order the big drink in a bowl with four straws.... So, if you are a neighbor in the hood, especially with friends or visitors, stop in after dinner for a specialty nightcap and some fun decor. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for years and never went here until recently on a nightcap-needed whim. Once I got past the initial terrible smell, the atmosphere was chill and cozy! My drink was good and well-price ($7 if I recall), I ordered some kind of sweet tea drink on the menu. The bartender was laid-back; not attentive, but that's ok by me; as I don't drink much. These drinks are so easy to inhale, you'll be on your forth before you realize one is enough. For a nice change of drunken pace, try some Zombie Shots...a double shot sweetened with simple sugar with a lemon slice resting on top. You MUST stir the drink if you don't want a triple shot of rum and grenadine. As a teacher, I should have read the drink description carefully. It said to stir, but after giving out directions all day, my brain was not properly functioning. My fault entirely. This place is meant for groups. You can take a date but it would be easy going date night. They have a comfortable backyard seating and you can bring in your own food. The backyard sitting is great. It's very Casual and easy going. Dress causal for this place. So girls in my opinion leave the heels for a more dressy night. Prior to arriving at this place I read my fellow Yelper's reviews. I tried the drinks that were mentioned. I tried the Scorpion Bowl, and did I ever. Omy that was insane. I couldn't enjoy it. It was waaay way too strong. I gave the drink to my friend, who is able to handle a great mount of alcohol however even he was feeling the effects of it. We were not able to finish the drink at all. Now for the service, ahhh it wasn't the best. It was bit busy maybe the that was the reason the bartenders were not friendly but I was not happy with the service at all. I might go back depending if my friends would like to try the place and their drinks. However I doubt that I will order a drink myself and wait around for the unfriendly bartender that were carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. read more

Welcome to Brooklyn- where theme bars are trendy bars- The funny thing is that if this exact bar was placed in the Upper East Side, Everyone in Brooklyn and especially the patrons of Zombie Hut would think it was corny, wak, or Played but its in Gowanus so its cool. This is a good place to take sisters visiting from CT (I did)... But a strange thing happened as out small group was sitting in the backyard- the bartender who checked our ID's before came out and said that the manager overhead us talking about "being young" yes that was the line- so she wanted to come out and check our ID's again... we thought it was funny 1) the manager wore a guise as a empty bottle pick up girl 2) She was listening to our convo about the fun that arises from a Polish Dad and Italian Mom and its associated predictable divorce (Kielbasa and Pasta doesn't mix :( 3. Zombie hut is a place where you are promised a little more than you receive. The decor inspires images of beaches, grass skirts, and fruity drinks, and it delivers on a third of that promise. The music is played at an appropriate volume which actually makes conversation possible, however the bar always seems to be a little bit less than crowded. The bar is also known for a large collection of various board games, It is definitely a new experience making friends over a game of scrabble or boggle as opposed to the tired conversational starters, "Who you with, What's your name, Where you live, and What you driving." It is also different from your typical city experience in that by midnight or 1 am, the majority of the bar has emptied out, leaving a few drunk law students to argue over whether something like per se is valid in a game of Scrabble. The drinks on the other hand, are extremely good, they have several signature drinks, one of which is the Frozen zombie bowl; which is a daquiri served in quart sized bowl with garnished with flaming alcohol. Zombie hut is the kind of place you go for pre-party drinks or for a laid back night. It will never be the last stop on any good night out, and unfortunately for them that is their loss. It's decorated like a Tahiti sort of place (straw walls and ceilings), and there's no particular reason why--which I think is kind of cool. The downsides, if any, are that there is no beer on tap (about 15 beers in bottles), and that the cocktail menu doesn't explain the ingredients in the cocktails. But I'm sure most Yelpers can deal with that. The crowd on weekends is neo-Williamsburg-ish. Not too many people above 35. I really liked this place. And would that I were a Brooklyn resident I would be in here on the regular. The inside bar is a little small, but I felt that its size lent it a good amount of charm. The decor is a bit cheesy, but self aware. The seating to the back of the inside by the fireplace was nice and this is where my group spent most of our time. My friends enjoyed their mixed drinks but I stuck to beer and had a fantastic Backwoods Bastard by Founders which I have been unsuccessfully trying to locate at home.
