With a group of four we got to have quite a lot of that menu. The tagliatelle in ox cheek ragu was a marvel of simplicity. The arancini completely changed my mind about a dish I've always considered an overrated way for a restaurant to dispose of extra risotto. The wine and cheese were superb, chosen for us by the charming wait staff. They also have a nice selection of Italian deli bits and bobs for you to take away with you. We found some of the charcuterie and cheese impossible to resist. The idea is to order a few tapas sized portions of various dishes and then mix and match with your eating partners - and it works a treat. Not quite full? Order something else - the kitchen is efficient and we have never waited too long. Now that we are semi-regulars the staff have got to know us to some extent. I am very much into my wine and I take some care when ordering a bottle any place I go. At Stuzzi when they ask me what I want to drink I now just ask them to 'bring me something interesting' and that is exactly what they do. They have never let me down. Every time the wine that arrives at the table is well selected - delicious and not unreasonably priced. This is a restaurant that wants people to enjoy the wines on offer so the prices are sensible - in so many places these days the price of a decent bottle is ridiculous, but here you will find the opposite. If you want fine dining and silver service that's not what this place is about. It's too laid back for that and it's now what they set out to do. Instead you are served excellent food in an unhurried environment, and that vibe always seems to be found at every table. Fun, tasty, easy.

Set just outside the main centre of Harrogate, Gianni's is a bright modern restaurant, with a sizeable bar, and very friendly, efficient staff. We were shown to sizeable round table even though there was only two of us, this was a nice touch, sometimes two person tables can feel a little cramped. The whole restaurant had a spacious feel, and was equally suited to couples, groups or families with children: the restaurant was about half full on the night we visited. We chose the early bird menu, £12.95 apiece for two courses, a sufficiently varied selection of dishes. After we had chosen our mains, we were given a complimentary bread basket, with a varied of freshly baked breads, served with a black olive tapenade and a spicy tomato dip, a lovely start to the meal. For my main, I had a mushroom based ravioli with a creamy tomato sauce, topped off with parmesan, full of flavour and a big portion, washed down with a giant 660ml bottle of Peroni, perfect! My wife had the salmon accompanied by the ratatouille, one of the best pieces of salmon she had ever eaten. Obviously you have to have a dessert, its almost compulsory, I went for the mixed gelato, an unusual choice, but a great combination of interesting flavours. "Winning" in my opinion, but I'm biased because I prefer "mom and pop" places to chains. The waitress was happy to find us room on a Saturday night after several attempts resulting in long waits for a table. Service was very accommodating, available, and friendly! The place can get a little cramped when busy, but what do you expect on a Saturday night? The staff were happy to accommodate special requests on the menu as well. Recommend going a good three courses at this place because portions are comparable to a typical fine dining establishment and exquisitely presented as well as prepared. After a superior meal I was pleased to find out the chef, Franco, is actually italian, and was able to thank him personally for a fantastic meal. The menu has plenty of vegetarian options, all of which sound very good indeed. We only had a couple, both of which were pizzas, a pasta entree, and an Italian sausage entree. The pizzas were fine but pretty bland. The cheeses did not seem to be especially fresh, and certainly not very interesting, as they reminded me of the grated cheese we use on our homemade pizzas. The lasagne was, again, perfectly acceptable, but not as good as the lasagne one of our party had at Pizza Express earlier in the week. The Italian sausage entree was very good -- good charring and red wine sauce -- but really no more complicated than an old fashioned English sausage 'n' gravy dish. So while it's not a knock-your-socks-off kind of place, Vivado is perfectly acceptable. I wish their food were as interesting as the taps in the men's bathroom; you'll see what I mean if you visit!

That being said, it wasn't what I expected. We were taken downstairs to a large dining room which seemed to be set up for catering and parties and the place didn't have a cozy or warm feeling to me. The food and service were okay, it's just that nothing really stood out as being memorable, and for the price, I would have preferred the owners to have gone a bit farther to introduce to Harrogate a more refined menu than what was on offer in virtually all the other Italian restaurants in this lovely North England town. Perhaps my criticism is not so much a dislike of "Sasso", but that of all the restaurants we tried in Harrogate, this one has the ability to stand out and shine. For a town that boasts some of the finest shopping in northern England, it would be worth the risk to raise the bar in the preparation and delivery of fine Italian food.

I used their delivery service on this occasion, with the food delivered by UberEATS. I was impressed by their selection of "Delivery Exclusive" pizzas, some of them sounded better than the regular menu - which made me surprised they wouldn't just put them on there in the first place! Some of the prices on Uber EATS do tend to be a little more than dining in, which can make it more expensive with Uber's own fees, and the fact you're unable to use Pizza Express Rewards, but ultimately you're paying for the comfort and convenience of delivery and enjoying the food at home, or like me in a nearby hotel. I opted for a gluten-free Pollo American pizza, which was listed as "Chicken, Pepperoni, tomato with garlic, red onions, mozzarella and topped with parsley.", while the pizza wasn't fully hot, despite being delivered in good time, it was still warm and tasted good, the flavours on the pizza were nice, and I liked the combination of pepperoni and chicken, together with the garlic and red onions. It would have been easier for me if they had cut my pizza fully, the pizza was sliced but with it still being stuck together, I had to get some cutlery from my hotel to finish the job. I also ordered a portion of gluten-free dough balls, which was served with a generous portion of garlic butter on the side, which it certainly needed to make them edible, but I did enjoy these too. PRO TIP: If you're dining in, be sure to download and use the Pizza Express app, the rewards available are great and depending on your tier status you can get a bunch of free stuff including dough balls, a soft drink, large bottled water and a Romana pizza upgrade. 4* - A pretty good shout for pizza in the town centre, whether you're dining in or having it delivered, although for the best possible prices, temperature and service, I would recommend the former.
