Besides, sour dough baguette is not Italian bread and neither is caramel slice :-) what is with sour dough in this country ? They have some decent bread and pastries and the coffee is also ok. This family owned café, described by locals as 'an institution in Cammeray,' really brings a…read morecommunity feel to its slightly dishevelled streets. The menu hasn't been changed in yonks, but that in no way detracts from it as the breakfast and lunch selection is straightforward and full of heart. The breakfast selection runs through to lunch but I ordered the 'Cammeray Starter' which lists sourdough bread with ricotta, avocado and tomatoes in its ingredients. I was excited to see what that would look like in a gourmet spread but it was literally just that, those four ingredients stuck on a plate. Huh. I ended up having a bit of food envy for my friend's french toast which was made with baguette and came with some delicious raspberry conserve. The sandwiches were in pretty hefty quantities (I saw quite a few leftovers being shifted back to the kitchen) but with all the outdoor seating a long lunch is encouraged, so you've got plenty of time to get your way through them!

I especially enjoyed the quiche and breadcrumb ricotta balls. It's a pity because the cafe is situated next to a lake at a nice park and it has streams of people walking past it every day. The coffee was decent, I ordered a soy latte but I'm pretty sure it was made with cow milk instead because I can't taste the soy at all. Anyway I let it go because I was in a good mood. The staff working here are quite attentive (not that many guests around) and helpful. We had really good service but the food seriously let it down, especially the dessert selection. Having said that, I can only comment on the afternoon tea set. Maybe the other items on the menu are better, although I doubt it. To sum it up, I'll give four stars for the surroundings but two stars for the food. Probably won't be back anytime soon.
