In my short time visiting Newtown, I found myself buried in constant reminder through both friends…read moreand strangers alike that a stop at this cafe is almost mandatory to satisfy one's holiday. Without need of contemplation, I was sold and found myself here the next day. The establishment itself appears small on the outside but one wouldn't expect a local cafe to be corporate Starbucks. There are enough tables to accomodate small groups and a backroom as well with extra seating for both group or individual. The environment itself is friendly and I've found myself caught in random conversation with individuals near me - it is true good coffee and breakfast brings out the happy spirit. There are of course areas suitable for those who would prefer to bring their laptop or read a book while enjoying their coffee and not to mention outside seating is available. The food itself serves as a stomping ground for this kind hearted beast of a cafe. The Chefs seem to take pride in their cooking as I admittedly sat near the kitchen in the back room and could hear the cooking and conversation. But I am no restaurant mogul so I'll just leave that as "things seemed to be in order in that kitchen." I decided to try the signature South End Breakfast while a friend ordered a baked bean soup and lastly, chef Olivia was kind enough to introduce a dish to me on a request. ( I hope this doesn't get her in trouble). It was yummy! I did not expect to write a long review so perhaps I'll come in and edit this one at a later time so I'll just let the pictures here speak for themselves. DEFINITELY will make this place my go-to cafe.

The first time I was here I had a salt pepper squid and spicy chorizo with pumpkin and fetta salad - that was epic. This time I thought I'd try something "cooked"; aka in Alby terms - a hot dish not a salad - so ordered the spaghetti with king prawns and chilli. Definitely didn't let me down though I still prefer the salad. Maybe that's what they mean by first impressions last? Something funny happened too and don't know whether it was intentional. Try go there with a group of people that has a mix of guys and girls. You'll notice they give you different glasses. All the guys had water glasses that were different to the girls. It could be chance but my gut feeling is the waiter enjoys his work too much!

Yum yum yum.... The…read moreMoody Chef is a not-small-not-supersized (medium sized?) cafe located minutes walk from the St Leonards Train Station and nearby highrise buildings. A corner position and high street profile provides plenty of light into the seating area, and an absence of street noise is welcomed. The cafe has a modern look and feel, without being 'ultra-modern boring', and takes advantage of a variety of furniture and decorative effects. A great place to hang out for a coffee or meal with the added benefit of soaking up some free wifi. I dropped in for breakfast during the week with a colleague for a lazy start to what would be a busy work day. Happy to see the specials menu I chose an omelette which had red pepper, chorizo and a cheese, the name of which unfortunately has skipped my mind, but was ultimately delicious. This paired with a flat white which was smooth and with good body, and my lazy start was on the up. There's enough on the menu to keep you interested with breaky/brunch/lunch options. Staff are friendly and accommodating, and our server checked on us without 'overchecking' as can be the case at some cafes. This was quite well timed - as we did need another caffeine injection prior to departure (it would be a very long day). In the past I've taken advantage of the function room for a business breakfast which was great as we had a space to ourselves, a good option if you want to get the team together but also have an opportunity to give a quick presentation (without disturbing the rest of the cafe folk or breaching corporate confidentiality...). Recommended - if you are in the area hit up the friendly staff at the Moody Chef... they do good work.

The other menu options looked equally as appealing however I had literally just eaten elsewhere so wasn't an option for me unfortunately. The Belgian chocolate arrived out to me looking like it was planning on going to the oscars or somewhere like that. the glass rim was laced with luscious chocolate and screamed lick me. The hot chocolate tasted pretty darn fantastic and the chocolate on the sides of the glass allowed you to mix it yourself so to get the level of chocolate you desired and then the rest you could simply eat with the spoon. The chocolate wasn't overly sweet, like the the third bowl of porridge it was just right :) Good job Barmuda and at $4.90 it's much better then the hot chocolate the specialist cafes offer.

Bun dumplings, normal dumplings and noodles. I appreciate a restaurant that doesn't try to cater for all but just tries to perfect what they are good at. The dumplings were good... really good. With a cute prawn tail sticking out of the end! The normal dumplings out beat the bun dumplings in my opinion but I still really enjoyed them both. A bit on the pricey side when you compare it to chinese dumplings as you only get 4 in each serving but at least you can try more variety. Can't wait to go back from those kimchi dumplings!

"The salads" an envious filling main meal, "The paella" I ask for the chorizo added and a little added chilli for me too. "The sea-change tasting platter" says for two but easily feeds three. "Chicken burger" big, messy & yum. Coffee is decent. I will return and drag friends there also.

Literally all of them, like some giant baby has been using them as toys and is jamming them all into one room of a huge Barbie play house for it's own infantile amusement. It doesn't make any sense, only, it totally does. The cafe is Seachange. and the reason it's so beloved by locals is three-fold: the servings are huge (no fleck of steak on a giant white plate here), they're happy to change absolutely anything on your order without any pissy whining or "No, the chef would kill me" type excuses, and the staff and management are unbelievably friendly. Wulf (sp?) made sure our group got a table inside to protect the little baby we had with us from the sun, and even though he was run off his feet stopped by the table a few times to drop jokes. I had the acai brekky bowl with banana and strawberry and bircher, at $15.90 it's the healthiest way to start the day while still feeling like you're eating ice cream. The Local with tons of bacon, eggs, and a potato rosti is also a winner, as is, oh, pretty much anything on the menu. When you're done, slop across the road and roll about on the beach like a walrus. Trust me, it's great.

The coffee was predictably awful. It's like buying a coffee at the airport- I KNOW these things so why do I do them? My toasted sandwich however was aces. And to be fair given that the Cosmo IS so old school Italian maybe they do an alright coffee for other people but refuse to give a soy piccallo the love and attention it deserves.
