I stopped by here for the first time this week - I had a work appointment at Zingerman's Bakehouse, and figured I'd try out the Creamery and the candy store next door too. I am a big Swiss fan so I asked if they had any - I ended up buying a small piece of one, which ended up being tasty, and also an aged cheddar they had, called Prairie Farms - they had a sample of it and it was DELICIOUS, which swayed me to try it. They also sell tiny little charcuterie boxes here and even big things of gelato. Everything looked really good. Staff is also very friendly - the girl behind the counter is a recent UM grad so we talked about that, I'm a 2009 alum. $6-7 for a small block of cheese is pretty standard for gourmet cheeses too, so I didn't think it was super pricey (although they did have some for $15+). I definitely want to stop by here again the next time I'm in A2. read more

After a disappointing lunch in Ypsi, we turned to Yelp for something sweet. How 'bout Gelato? Head to Zingerman's Creamery! Quickly. This is an excellent stop for all things dairy. Mostly, cheese for me. Today I picked up: six ounces of a very creamy Goat cream cheese, a smoked salmon cream cheese and a Goat feta. Since we had a cooler, I also bought a half pound of Detroit Street Brick cheese. It begins as a dense, crumbly cheese with a twist of lemon and ages into more of a savory, spicy flavour. The star of the show is the gelato. I say the best is the Coffee flavour. Closely followed by the Peanut Butter chocolate and the Dark chocolate. Today we split a Cherry Cream Cheese Gelato. While Zingerman's has several upscale, elite businesses around Ann Arbor, the Creamery is perhaps the most unique. While it started out selling a limited assortment of cheeses made in-house along with gelato, they now sell even more varieties of fancy cheese, plus custom cheese sandwiches. I definitely am intrigued to try one of the sandwiches in future. On my most recent visit, I enjoyed a tiny free serving of lemon sorbetto for my birthday. It was nice and tart, just like I like it., Service has been reliable and informed. The only reason I give less than 5 stars is because the prices always seem quite high. read more

Right next door to the bakehouse, this is a stop that you shouldn't miss. I absolutely love their gelato. They have rotating seasonal flavors as well as standard favorites. In the fall, I get their seasonal paw paw flavor. If you don't know what that is, it's a native Michigan fruit that has a sweet, tropical flavor that's kind of like a mix of banana, mango, and melon. Their gelato captures the flavors of the fruit perfectly-it's like you're eating the fruit exactly minus the seeds! Since the fruit goes bad so quickly, this is the only place I've found that sells anything made with it. Of course, the service is impeccable-everyone is so helpful and if you're nervous, don't be! For the first time in my entire life I didn't spend Christmas Day with my mom and grandmother. But, that's life in a pandemic. I still wanted to do something special to mark the occasion but I also didn't particularly care to do much cooking myself so I investigated some platters in town and landed on the Zingerman's Creamery option. Now, I got greedy and instead of doing the mini option for just two people, I went "small" which is was for 5-10. For the two of us. That's right. Just two. And you know what? I'd do it again! We had delicious meats and cheeses for a couple of days. It was perfect. They have a super easy online ordering system to build your tray. Ours came with set cheeses and our choice of 5 sides. I went with the dried pears, an apple and onion jam, marcona almonds, cornichons, and prosciutto. And you can select those options along with your pick up time on their website. However, you can't make any tweaks to the cheeses, and since my husband has an intolerance to goat cheese, I called in my order to see if I could swap out the City Goat for another and they were beyond kind and accommodating about it. I paid over the phone and picked up my tray at the selected time on Christmas Eve. It was excellent. FYI I like a little variety in my charcuterie and the platter only offered one option so I just bought a salami and sliced it to add to the tray. I'm sure you could ask them for another option but I just decided to keep it easy and pick out something we both liked to add to it. read more

Surprisingly bad customer service on this Sunday morning given there was only one other customer in the store and they had already paid for their item. We stood in front of the gelato case for the longest time, waiting for the clerk to in any way acknowledge us or eventually come over and help us. Instead, he stood at the register, where he had already finished ringing up the other person, continuing to talk with him at length about EMT work, etc. We couldn't wait any more so just left. While walking past their conversation on the way out the door we asked (having to briefly interrupt their ongoing conversation) if anyone else might be working. Mistakes happen but usually not at a brand that says their customer service is top rate. read more

Spanish Manchego - hard cheese that is creamy TIPS AND TRICKS - you can taste any cheese before you buy, don't be shy - ask the staff if the cheese pairs with a fig jam or other fruit compote. Those pairings are magical. Be sure to get the pairing with the cheese (either from Zingerman's or from a grocery) - they have crackers for sale but I usually get my crackers from the grocery store. This shop is adorable. I love that they not only sell their cheese, you can purchase a toast or sandwich right there to enjoy immediately. This is a very small space but packs in a lot of product. They have their famous gelato which you can get scooped for now or their freezer to get a container for later. I do enjoy Zingerman's gelato. Their chocolate is always good. I wish their scoops were a bit bigger, they have more typical European sizes. Which is fine, but we recently went to Hawaii and got the most giant scoops of gelato really ever in my life and we have been craving gelato ever since, so it is nice to know we have a quality gelato store in Michigan when we need that gelato fix. read more

Ok, definite fat fest going on here! Feed your inner mouse with some of the finest cheeses made in America or abroad. Think Whole Foods is the end all? Think again.... Not sure where to begin except that the deli downtown is now supplied by this outlying hub of everything creamy and good. Gelato? Yep, Italian style all the way! How about some rare aged cheeses from the UK, Vermont, Michigan or Wisconsin? Premium (vecchio) aged two-years parmigiana reggiano? This is the cat's meow, long lingering taste, flavor crystals but no mouth burn. Expensive? You betcha' but try finding a more satisfying supply. By the time you reach the conclusion there's is the best you could have bought four or more pounds worth! No lie. I'd like to point out that while Zingerman's in general is considered expensive, it's really about how much you're willing to spend for epic eating. Try something new or try something familiar. I bet you'll never view cheeses at Trader Joe's with the same affinity after trying top shelf Manchego, Gloucester or Pecorino Romano. read more

I went here to check out their gelato variety. I am always in the mood for gelato and this wasn't going to be an exception. As soon as I entered the shop I was promptly greeted and asked how could I be helped. I informed the sales representative that I was there for their gelato. The rep. showed me the flavors they had and informed how their shop uses locally sourced ingredients to make their gelato. I was also told that I could sample as many flavors as I wanted. I scanned through their flavors and settled on sampling two of them that stood out to me. One was Maple Pecan and other one was Sour Cream Coffee Cake. I liked them both. I loved the taste of Sour Cream Coffee Cake the most. I decided to go with a small cup ($3 +tax) and I could have two flavors so went with the two I sampled. Their small size cup is pretty small. It could pass for a mini, in my opinion. However, the gelato portion size was pretty decent. It was kind of overflowing ...heheh! The gelato was smooth, thick and creamy. The Sour Cream Coffee Cake was da bomb. Loved it. It was exquisite and scrumptious. The Maple Pecan's pecans were huge and the maple syrup 's (Michigan's own produced Maple syrup) taste was very nice. It wasn't too sweet either. It was a win-win situation for me. This shop also had variety of cheeses, and pre-packed gelato pints & quarts. I didn't anything else from here. It was worth the stop. I would go back here for sure. This review is strictly for my experience with having their gelato. I have it the full five stars because of what the overall shop is about. The Zingerman's Creamery reminds me of the father's cheese selection at his deli back home in New Jersey. Fresh mozzarella, unique offerings of cheeses, and those oh-so-amazing grilled sandwiches are things I miss about home. I love stopping here before I head to Costco (since it's essentially in the same complex) for a delicious sandwich and maybe a coffee next door. This morning I stopped in around 11:30 for a manchester cheese & fig jam sandwich on grilled farm bread with prosciutto ($13 for this hot, sweet & salty goodness), and as I was waiting for it to be prepared, I took a look around the small storefront. The twinkling lights and coffeehouse music invite you inside...they have fresh bread, an assortment of cheeses, spreads, gelato, and lots of other goodies that might catch your eye. As I waiting, one of the workers asked if I would be interested in a day-old loaf of Italian bread.... um, YES! Still fluffy & such a nice gesture! read more

I ordered a large cheese tray that cost over $200. Our work party for the next day was canceled due to a forecast of blizzard conditions. I called Zingerman's Creamery a few hours before my pick up time and explained that my work party for the next day was canceled because of the forecasted storm; could I please cancel the order? I was told that it had already been made so I couldn't cancel. We picked up the tray and was disappointed again. There was no way it could've fed 20-25 people. So here we are with a $200 cheese tray that a small family of 3 couldn't possibly eat before it goes bad. What a waste of money and horrible experience. I am accustomed to the friendliness and quality of Zingerman's Deli. I have always ordered from them in the past. I thought I was ordering from them when I ordered this cheese tray. Tucked away in an industrial looking part of Ann Arbor are different Zingerman affiliates stores. It's kind of nice because they are all next door to each other and it gives you a chance to explore. This was my second visit to this area and decided to spend a decent amount of time in each location. As we walked in we were warmly greeted and as we looked around we were given a sample of parmesan to taste as we looked. As we looked we decided to buy some supplies to make our own meat and cheese board when we got back to Ohio. The gentleman was so helpful and knowledgeable about the different cheeses and different pairings we could do with them. After we picked out some cheeses and some things to pair them with we decided to try the gelato. I ordered the sour cream cake gelato. It was creamy and had chunks of cake mixed in. OMGoodness. Walking into this creamery was like walking into a dream I have every single night... An entire room that's just full of CHEESE! Well cheese and gelato haha :) There was so many different kinds and so much to look at, that I was getting overwhelmed but in a good way, in a cheesy way. My love for cheese is real and it's deep and this place now has a special place in it in my cheesy filled heart. And the wonderful ladies who work here are just the sweetest and will let you try anything you want. They will also make grilled cheeses and other sandwiches too. So I wasn't leaving cheese nirvana empty handed. I opted for a cheese called "Chelsea" that was just perfect, like most things named Chelsea of course. It's an aged, mold ripened goat cheese with an edible vegetable ash rind. I'm really into vegetable ash these days. It gives the cheese a smokey taste that can pair really good with certain breads and crackers. This review is for the Mozzerella Making Class AND the store! Zingerman's has such a strong reputation for having the highest quality product that I sometimes feel it's impossible for them to live up to the hype. But they keep surpassing even the highest expectations! First, there's nothing but love, love, love in these cheeses and gelatos here. The staff are the friendliest and most knowledgeable you can find. (where does Zingerman's find them??? because walk this block, into the coffee shop, bakery or candy store and they are all so friendly and helpful that they make Disney look depressing) But the real gold is in the classes that Zingerman's puts on. (this is my 2nd.. I did one on gelato awhile back) This 3 hour mozzarella class actually walks you through making your own mozzarella and buratta and somehow, SOMEHOW makes it easy to understand and remember. (there's a lot to remember but somehow they are so good at explaining it, you just walk away feeling like a genius) I originally thought the class was pricey, ($75 each), but afterwards felt like it was actually cheap and they should charge more for what they give you. (I have mozzarella for a neighborhood party in my fridge right now and knowledge for a lifetime) It was amazing to watch it all come together too. We did this for my om's 78th birthday because she is interested in learning new things and seeing new places... and there's nothing more you can give her except experiences. Started with the grilled cheese of bacon pimento cheese. I can't even explain how delicious this was. For our second sandwich we split the Lincoln log cheese and piquillo pepper. Also super good. You can also ask to make a sandwich with pretty much any cheese there. They sell cheese as well. You can sample anything you want. I would ask what their favorites are. I never realized that Zingerman's had so many branches from the Deli restaurant. This is a very famous place and it is definitely worth the hype. I actually went here for a Yelp Elite Event and it was Cheese 101. They showed up how to make mozzarella from scratch. It was lowkey a bucket list of mine and I'm glad that I invited a close friend to do it with me. I realized Zingerman's take their time to make each of their ingredients. After the cheese 101 we got to try to taste the mozzarella and it was definitely different since it is homemade/hand made by hot temperature water. After this session we tried a sandwich and it was like the perfect crisp and crunch. I did forget the sandwich name but it basil pesto on it! Yes so please please check this place out! Paw paw gelato. Yeah I am a fan of the paw paw fruit, mmmmm. They give out freebie gelato for your birthday here to boot. They use Calder dairy products to make their gelato and it is creamy and delicious. If you are unfamiliar with paw paw, it is delicious, sweet and full bodied. If its not your thing or is not in stock :(, no worries, the dark chocolate, coconut, john do ya (chocolate hazelnut), burnt sugar, dulce de leche and "joe"lato (coffee) are also very tasty. The cheeses are my normal buys here though. They run expensive but they are generally worth the dent in the wallet. Spendy cheese tends to be of the *a little goes a long way* variety, thank goodness. I can say I have never had a goat cheese I did not like here but I am a big fan of the fresh mozzarella too. Our last stop at all things Zingerman's on the south side was the creamery. The display case is packed and the shop has the wonderful aroma of aged cheeses. There is also a gelato station and a selection of accessory accents for entertaining, like the most gigantic cans of cornichons I have ever seen! We bought some cheese and some of our party consumed the gelato. But having already consumed baked treats and coffee, I was too full to eat more on this outing. With the bakery retail and coffee shop in this strip of Zingerman options in their industrial park location, the creamery makes it an easy place to shop if the downtown deli is not convenient. Parking is easy, the interior is plain and the staff very friendly and helpful. Good training shows at all Zingerman locations. If I lived in Ann Arbor, this would certainly be a regular stop for me. read more

Odd location but it IS the factory so I get it. Just not the nicest place for an ice cream/cheese shop. That already is the strangest combination and they should really seperate the two. My husband and son were so turned off by the strong smell of the cheeses that they left, my child not wanting ice cream, now THAT is unheard of if you know my son! I toughed it out for the sake of ice cream/gelato and got the turtle and rocky road. $2.50 a scoop is by far the cheapest you'll ever get anything form Zingerman's and it was the best thing they have to offer! The texture is unlike any other, very complex and a true delight to my tastebuds! They should really open up an ice cream parlor downtown, than they would be even richer! read more

I love this Creamery! The employees are always very nice and helpful, and are very knowledgeable about the different cheeses. They also let you try the cheeses, so you know what kind to get! Zingerman's has so many, and they are all delicious. I love that you can see them making the cheese behind windows in the store; it truly adds to the creamery experience. The cheese can be pricey, but I usually just get enough for some delicious toast at home (on Zingerman's bread from the Bakehouse next door!). They also offer cheese platters and classes. read more

Let me start by saying, we love everything Zingerman's. My daughter was home from college and we stopped into the creamery for a couple of our favorite, the "half and half" (lemon sorbet and iced tea)...which are delicious. The gelato-ista scoops the sorbet into cups, reaches into the fridge, and then informs us, "we're out of iced tea". She then just stares at us. She doesn't offer to make iced tea. She doesn't offer an alternative. She just looks at us like tea doesn't exist and that's that. After an awkward silence, we leave. So disappointed. read more

This is my favorite place!! Hubby and I went for a cheese making class once and fell in love with the place. I had to take someone out to Ypsilanti so I figured I stop in and pick up some goodies being I'm an hour away. The staff greets you right when you walk in the door and they are overwhelming happy to let you try anything because it's going to be a sale for them. I spent a fair amount and I did want to take some gelato home but not sure how it would hold up. They assured me being it's kept at minus five degrees and with ice packs they gave me it should be fine. So I bought. They were right. It was in tact by time I got home. The staff are a wealth full of knowledge and sample and mix everything as tasters themselves. Worth the drive and the money because everything is pure and whole ingredients. Absolutely will return! Helpful staff, great choices. I was ecstatic to find the pimento bacon spread and salmon spread. Also a wonderful seasonal chestnut wrapped cheese, as well as blue and Gouda goat cheeses. I snagged a flyer from the bake shop and noticed they have a seasonal cheese for October that is an award winner. Need to return to try that one. Cheese is the #1 reason I could never be vegan. Even within the dairy family, I don't drink much milk, and could likely cut that out. However, cheese? Cheese is another thing entirely. It's easy to understand, then, why I would have gotten very excited long ago at the first whispers I heard about Zingerman's Creamery. And even though I can't quite justify paying for these specialty dairy items on a regular basis, if I want a real treat, I'm likely to think of some of Z'man's cheeses. My favorite so far is the fresh mozzarella that I've gotten from the Farmer's Market stand a handful of times. Add that to some day old toasted bread and home-grown basil & tomatoes, and you have yourself a pretty amazing meal. The fact you're rocking cheap day-old bread helps make up for the price of the dairy indulgence. I hear their gelato is also divine, and I'll have to give it a try. I stopped in while in town to pick up lunch for my husband and I and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff and loads of options from cheese to gelato. Stop two of three on my pilgrimage to Zingerman's Southside affiliates. If you're at the Bakehouse, then you may as well step next door to the Creamery. It doesn't have the same charm as the cheese case at the Deli, but it doesn't have the lunch crowd either. You can look and sample without feeling like you're in the way. I walked out with chunks of Saga Blue Brie from Muskegon, MI, and Roelli Red Rock Cheddar veined with Blue from Shullsburg, WI. Both are very good regional cheeses. Ha... Who cut the cheese? Apparently Zingerman's did. And what a fine cut it was. Zingerman's Creamery is not for the squeamish. It's not about slices of American cheese. It's all about flavorful and robust cheeses that hit your nose like a brick and then gently tickle your palette as you slowly move them around your mouth while trying to get the complex flavors out of it. And Zingerman's does gelato. This is rich and tasty and offer an unique variation to all of the ice cream parlors that are in the area. Oh ... and did I mention bacon.... we all know that everything is better with bacon... including cheese!... (and if you visit Zingerman's bakehouse, you'll find that donuts are too). They offer classes on how to make cheese and offer tours of the facility on Sundays. The one thing that caught my eye was the kits that let you make your own cheese at home. Zingerman's is all about quality, and it really shows. While their stuff is outside my routine price range of living, I can't fault them. It's quality, they set a standard of excellence, and that's to be appreciated. I've come a few times now, and this last time I fell in love with their good old vanilla gelato. It's an explosion of vanilla bean in your mouth, and the color almost brown because of how much vanilla bean is in it. Cheese wise I love the Sharon Hollow peppercorn on some of the bakehouses sourdough! The Creamery staff are some of the most helpful, courtesy, and pleasant individuals I've gotten to interact with.
