Patient Feedback: I…read moresaw this ENT for a minor ear issue. While I don't expect every doctor to have perfect bedside manner, my experience during this visit left me uncomfortable. The doctor asked about my profession, but before I could answer, he interrupted and guessed that I was an administrative assistant. While I've held that role before and respect it deeply, the assumption -- and the way it was delivered -- came across as dismissive and unprofessional. He also explained post-care instructions in a tone that felt overly condescending, including how to avoid getting water in my ear as if I'd never taken a shower before. I came for medical care, not to be talked down to. Additionally, the office staff didn't inform me that the doctor was running 30 minutes behind. A simple heads-up would have gone a long way toward showing respect for patients' time. I recognize that other reviews speak highly of this physician, so perhaps I caught him on an off day. Still, the interaction felt unnecessarily patronizing and left a poor impression. I will not be back. It's also worth mentioning that the office requires a credit card to be kept on file "just in case of charges." In all my years of visiting various doctors, I've never encountered that policy before, and it felt out of step with standard practice.

He completely ignored my significant others' symptoms and her statements, and gave her a diagnosis of "anxiety" that simply isn't true (as has been since verified by actually competant professionals). This guy might come off as reasonable but his sexism and bias toward thinking "all women are hysterical" make him a bad doctor. Don't see him.

5+ stars for Dr. Gopal's knowledge and experience in diagnosing a complicated deep sinus…read moreinfection. As well as gentleness when exploring the depths of sinuses within your head. Not a pleasant thing to have done, but Dr. Gopal took extra care in easing this uncomfortable procedure. 5+ stars for recognizing the severity of this nasty infection and putting treatment on the fast track to surgery. Making sure that the surgery was indeed on the fast track, Dr. Gopal personally scheduled the surgery, rearranging patients and closely monitoring the sorry looking nasal passages for further signs of deterioration. (Other distinguished ENT physicians, with the exception of Dr. Vernik, who is Dr Gopal's partner, did not recognize the intensity of this infection and thus did not get any little yelp red stars). 5+ stars for excellent bedside manners, and for the ability to convey trust that patients need to see before counting backwards from 100 to 99. Knowing that your doctor has done this same surgery, hundreds of times, and has taught many other physicians, is reassuring. And when the surgery in only a thin bone away from your brain, you need to have trust. 5+ stars for a smooth surgery and as smooth as can be expected recovery, while zapping the daylights out of those nasty bacteria who set up home in little cranial cubby holes. Sinus surgery recovery can be rough, with packing, nasal breathing tubes, and trapped gunk. Dr. Gopal avoids nasal packing when possible. Most doctors we met still do packing, and thus, sadly, receive no little red stars. 5+ stars for an excellent office staff. This is a private practice and therefore, patients get the surprise of longer visits, less bureaucratic rules (where patients can easily get frustrated) and more personal treatment. The office personnel are helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable, thus earning themselves a 5+ star rating. 5+ stars for Dr. Gopal's and Dr. Vernick's ability to balance private practice and faculty responsibilities at Harvard Medical School, and giving patients a better option than busy clinics, no matter how prestigious. According to Dr. Gopal and Vernik's website, delivering faster and superior care was one reason that they formed a private practice. Let me see....5 stars ....multiplied by 6 equals....30 STARS! I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Aliphas at his Newton-Wellesley hospital office a few times…read morerelated to chronic nasal congestion and difficulty breathing and was consistently impressed by his competence and professionalism. At my first visit, Dr. Aliphas referenced an older cat scan I had back in 2013(!) showing my septum was slightly deviated, but he pointed out that if I had been fine for so many years, there could be another underlying cause to the congestion. He quickly formulated a course of action to help determine the cause of my congestion using a systematic approach in an attempt to rule out certain potential causes first. He ordered an allergy test which came back negative, prescribed a special ointment in case I had a chronic infection, and suggested using nasal rinses to flush out the congestion. I appreciated his tendency to suggest less-invasive tasks first, and save the most invasive (surgery) for last. After ruling out allergies or an infection, we were able to conclude that the deviated septum was likely the main cause of my chronic nasal congestion. Dr. Aliphas explained to me the risks and potential benefits of receiving a septoplasty with turbinate reduction, but noted that if the nasal rinses were offering me enough relief, the surgery may not be totally necessary. Dr. Aliphas also was careful not to guarantee any surgical outcome, given the nature of this type of procedure, which I really appreciated. After thinking it over (ironically I had plenty of time due to COVID-19), I opted for the surgery and had it performed a week ago. Earlier today, he removed my nasal splints (which was painless and took maybe 5 minutes) and I can breathe clearly for the first time in recent memory. I'm 29. I remain impressed by Dr. Aliphas' measured, objective approach to determining the actual cause of my symptoms. He is clearly great at what he does and I can tell he enjoys helping his patients. He never rushed me out of his office if I asked too many questions and always made sure I was comfortable to proceed with whatever option I chose. Most importantly, he made it clear that I was in the driver's seat, and that he was along for the ride no matter which path I chose. Bravo Dr. Aliphas. THANK YOU for your excellent care and for allowing me to breathe normally again. PS, for what it's worth, their desk staff and office manager Leah were excellent at helping me with the FMLA paperwork my employer needed for me to get sick time to have this procedure.

Fertility is personal and emotional and scary but choosing the right doctor makes ALL the difference. The best decision I made was choosing Dr. Jan Shifren at Newton Wellesley Hospital. At my initial assessment, Dr. Shifren walked me through every single step of the process and answered all the questions I could come up with. It only takes a quick google search to learn she's internationally recognized as one of the top physicians in her field of expertise and she's been published in more journals than I could count. What a google search doesn't tell you is how truly wonderful she is as a person. Dr. Shifren is so thoughtful, knowledgeable, transparent, upfront and honest. I never felt rushed at our appointments (virtual and in-person) and Dr. Shifren was by my side, from start to finish. She has a truly incredible team of nurses, technicians and administrators who keep you feeling positive throughout the journey and take great care of you at each appointment. After meeting with Dr. Shifren, I worked with her billing department to understand all the financial costs associated with the procedure and they gave me a very easy to understand price breakdown. A few months after our initial appointment it was March of 2022, and I was ready to go. At that time I started working very closely with Zuzana, her incredible nurse who was by my side for the next 2 weeks walking me through the process. Zuzana and her colleagues were very quick to respond to my emails with questions or concerns and always had all the answers right away. Once the process begins, you are going into their office at NWH anywhere from 2-4 times a week for blood draws and ultrasounds. All the ultrasound technicians are great and be sure to get your blood drawn by Grace, she will make your day every time you see her. I felt really taken care of on an emotional and physical level which is what you want and what you need to get through this process. My patient experience could not have been any better and I would highly recommend choosing Dr. Shifren and her team at NWH if you are looking into freezing your eggs. -Melissa

I saw Dr. Sakamuri for some irregular bleeding, she suggested I go back on birth control to stop…read morethe bleeding. when I told her I was not willing to because the side effects were too severe in the past, she was super rude and judgmental and said I "might as well be on prenatal vitamins" even though she knew I had no intention of getting pregnant. Perhaps there isn't another known solution for my irregular bleeding, but it's unacceptable to shame a patient like that. Like any drug, Birth control has side effects and women deserve to know the full truth so they can make educated choices on their own. Not be shamed or scared by their health care providers without proper information. Perhaps Sakamuri only cares to prescribe medications so she can cut herself a check. It's truly sad that myself and other women have to face this type of judgement in a space that is supposed to be safe for everyone to make informed decisions about their own bodies.

He suggested he could give me a cortisone shot. Due to me being extremely allergic to Polyethylene Glycol in which I have an anaphylactic reaction (Dr. Phillips is aware of this as it noted in my record.). When he suggested the a cortisone shot my wife and I asked at the same time "Does the shot contain Polyethylene Glycol." His response, "not that I'm aware of". Knowing what happens to me you would think he would review the ingredients. Well Polyethylene Glycol was the main ingredient of the cortisone shot and I had a serious Anaphylactic reaction. I felt sick immediately after the shot and the front desk receptionist brought me to the bathroom and left. My wife came to find me a few minutes later and I was on the floor unconscious. She new immediately what happen. Everyone in office came running and 911 was called. Nobody got an EpI pen, Dr Phillips stood there and said to me, "my husband passed out." I was rushed to Newton Wellesley hospital and it was so severe and was a touch and go situation. Dr. Philllips negligence caused harm and unnecessary body and organ stress to me that could have resulted in death. it would have taken a few minutes to investigate the ingredients in the shot. I reported this to the medical board and they decided not to recommend disciplinary action. He was more or less slapped on hand and the Complaint Committee sent him a letter to "remind him the importance of reviewing and verifying ingredient labels when a specific question is raised by a patient with allergy concern". I would think twice before considering an appointment with him. A concerned and caring doctor would have at least called me to see how I was doing. That tells you something. ML - Sept 23, 2025
