We've just returned home from a fabulous weekend in Charleston at the Zero George. We arrived much later than we had planned - acutally didn't get there until midnight. The gentleman at the front desk could not have been more welcoming and helpful. He ushered us to our room right away. The room was absolutely delightful - we were in a queen room on the 2nd level. It was quite spacious and well appointed with plush pillows, duvet, and robes. There was even a personalized note in our room welcoming us and wishing us a happy anniversary (as I had indicated it was our anniversary during booking). This suttle details were much appreciated - especiallly after a long drive and a midnight arrival time. One of the things we love the most about Zero George is it's simplistic, elegant, yet modern decor you'll find surrounding the entire grounds. The rooms have a modern european vibe to them which is very different from most of the lodging options I found when searching for an upscale hotel/inn in Charleston. While the old world/victorian decor you'll find at nearby hotels are beautiful, it just simply isn't our style. We were so much more comfortable at the Zero....it is elegant and modern but non-pretentious and not at all stuffy. The inn consists of 4 buildings - historic townhomes that have been converted to this inn. Each building has a slightly different look/feel but all are fabulous. The check in/common building has someone on-site 24/7 and you are free to help yourself to an amazing cup of coffee from their coffee bar at any time. They have the most amazing Miele coffee/cappucino/latte maker so you can customize your beverage. We'd slip in here several times throughout the day/evening to get more coffee :). As a part of your stay, they offer a daily breakfast from 7am-11am consisting of fruit, yogurt, cheeses, toast & jams, cereal, hard boiled eggs, and juices. This was the perfect start to each day. While it isn't a huge spread, we were happy with it and it held us over until dinner on most days. In the afternoon, starting at 4pm, they have cocktail hour in which you can sit back and enjoy a glass of wine - they typically offer a couple of different whites and reds and even had a nice sparkling option too. Along with the wine, they have olives, cheeses, dried fruit, nuts, etc. Just a perfect pre-dinner nosher to enjoy before heading out for the evening. We enjoyed sitting out in the garden courtyard for breakfast and even wrapping up our evenings sitting on the porch in the comfy sofa/chairs while sipping a wine or coffee. The service and staff here are simply top notch. They will do their absolute best to accommodate any and all requests. Given that it was our anniversary, my husband had purchased me a gift back home but it hadn't arrived yet so he called the jeweler to rearrange the shipping address to the George. He was a little concerned and let Aaron (at the desk) know what was going on and to please let him know as soon as this very special package arrived. The next day, right on time (3pm) Aaron rushes the package to our room. He understood the importance and was eager to bring this right up to us - all with a smile. We were so shocked to know the Zero has only been open since February!! With service like this - we thought it had been open for a very long time. There were none of those "new opening kinks", etc. Everything here runs smooth as silk and is impressive. What you will not find here: a pool or bistro/restuarant (yet)...they indicated they're planning to open a full bar as well as a small bistro in the future. We were a-ok with not having a pool and/or restaurant on site. We actually preferred it as it bodes well with the rustic/modern simplicity of the property. It's incredibly quiet and enjoyable and quite honestly - perfect. I'm reluctant to write such a stellar review as I fear that the word will get out and we'll have a hard time getting a reservation in the future :). We just returned from our 10 year anniversary trip in Charleston & Zero George. To start, I was SO impressed with the hotel leading up to the trip. They have an interactive itinerary where you can request reservations and plan your trip connected to your account. They made two reservations for us and we emailed back and forth several times- they were so accommodating leading up to the trip. Once we arrived, things got a little - not our style, I suppose. It was beautiful. We loved the hotel, our room, the amenities, the grounds- but most of the staff was pretty snobby. We felt out of place. They were polite but guarded and we wanted warm and welcoming and personable. The breakfast lady: fabulous. The night housekeeper: fabulous- just sweet as can be. Everyone else- I just got this weird vibe. That being said, we had a fabulous time and honestly, would totally stay there again and probably will. Most of the hotels in Charleston are very Southern and historic- with no modern updates. We love how Zero George embraces its roots but has the modern touches that make it feel up to date and fresh. Also, the wine and cheese hour and breakfast are fabulous. The cafe was closed while we were there but we will definitely try it next time! read more

Southern Charm at it's finest. I couldn't imagine a better place to stay in Charleston! Sure, it's a bit off the beaten path, but when you are on the culinary adventure that Charleston offers, a little walking is welcome. Not to mention, Zero George is very close run to the Athur Ravenal Bridge- another favorite. There are also bikes available for guests if you are into that sort of thing... We have stayed here twice- once in a "standard" room that was anything but standard- cozy beds, big bathroom, fireplace, etc. The second time we had the luxury of staying in the top floor of one of the carriage houses. WOW. Huge walk-in closet/dressing area, separate living room, tons of windows with blackout shades...a home away from home. The staff is incredibly attentive and makes every effort to make you feel like you are in a 5-star hotel. The happy hour has improved since the first time we stayed here as well. The offerings are more plentiful and the wine options more varied. Next time we stay here we will sign up for the cooking demonstration, as it was intimate and personalized. More hotels should model themselves after Zero George. They know what they are doing from A-Z and it doesn't go unnoticed. read more

Wonderful, Whimsical,& delectable food. From the amuse to the desert, EVERYTHING was done magnificently. Coming out of a kitchen about the size of a small kitchen pantry. The chef's careful thought into his presentation, use of simple seasonal ingredients makes Zero George a must for anyone. The staff and their service is amazing and the mixologist is spot on. We enjoyed a tasty dinner last night and enjoyed the southern charm and setting. The dishes were interesting and delicious. Kailee took care of our libations on the porch and then proceeded to take exceptional care of us throughout dinner. She is a gem worthy of repeat business. The only criticism of the night had to do with a "manager" who complained about how we were spread out on the balcony while enjoying our cocktails. To say that his manner was lacking southern charm, or tact, is an understatement. He reappeared again making faces once we were seated. He should be reminded that providing excellence in customer service includes management. read more

The stay at Zero George was all-in-all pretty good. The main issue we had with our time there was the staff. There were a few staff members we interacted with who had an attitude problem, especially the bartenders though the reception was fantastic. They were snarky and often made us feel as though we were inconveniencing them. Not all of the staff had this issue, but the attitude of the select few resonated with all of the group. It seems as though those bartenders probably should not be working in the hospitality industry. If we had a problem with just one member, I would not have a problem but it was at least three members who had this issue. One day I was sitting in the living room of the main house and heard bartenders downstairs yelling cuss words at each other, which was just not something I expected from this hotel. The quality of the rooms was great, the atmosphere was amazing, the food was great, they just missed the mark with some of their staff. read more

We have now attempted to go here twice for the burger because we have heard it is amazing. However, the first time a server accidentally gave the last one away to someone who did not order it. We were told to call ahead and reserve one next time by a manager. We called ahead, they took our name, number and a time for when we could be there. We show up and are told the burgers are gone. The food may be good (we wouldn't really know) but this is horrible customer service. A different manager told us we could have a cocktail on the house. But we came for dinner, which was given after it was promised. Why would we stay for one free drink? We are extremely disappointed and will never return. read more

Just returned from 5 days at Zero George- we stayed in a Veranda King on the 2nd floor in one of the charming houses. The room was decorated beautifully. Linens were exquisite. What you see in the picture on-line is exactly what it looks like in person. The little "0"branding details were a classy touch spread throughout many places on the property-Even the glass water jugs that were provided with a bedtime snack were etched with "0". The staff was not your average staff.. They went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. We had some pre-arranged hiccups with a few of our reservations and pre-plans, but even with that said we would add a star for the way we were handled. Every single staff member jumped in and they were nothing but eager to assist and accommodate. The GM Ray was present and showed us that Zero George defined what true southern hospitality is. Food review time; The daily breakfast is simple. We called it simply delish. The wine and cheese hour was also the same, simple but a nice touch.. The personable bartender made some unique mixology goodness whenever we had drinks at the intimate bar. The Infamous Chef Petrillo was not In town when we arrived and we were disappointed but with that being said we were wowed by his sous chef Amanda. She made Chefs exquisite menu come to life in our palate . The food was inventive yet approachable and all senses were aroused. We had the scallop tartare - a first time for me and it was mild yet flavorful - my hubs had the lamb belly appetizer and it was so perfectly cooked it was a melt in your mouth kind of feeling; he said. We also shared the tortellini which was a wow..Our entrees were 2 perfectly presented plates of fish. One was snapper and the other salmon. We wouldn't of changed a thing about our meals and or our waiter. This wonderful hotel, located in a cluster of historic houses and outbuildings around a courtyard in Charleston's charming Ansonborough district, is another world. More local and less touristy than other parts of Charleston, it really takes you back to a more civilized time but in a very genuine (i.e., non-Williamsburg) way. Super friendly staff who seemed to know all about me the moment I checked in. Gorgeous accommodations and a bar with a killer by-the-glass wine program thanks to Kendal, the wine director. As much as I loved walking around this town -- probably the most beautiful town in America -- I couldn't wait to get back to Zero George every evening just to bask in the hotel's ambiance and its special glow. Highest recommendation (and I've stayed at many top-notch hotels all over the world). I will return, absolutely. read more

This is a review of the restaurant alone. The menus is limited to small plates but each is marvelous. Each is well cooked, flavorful and excellently seasoned. Vincent and Amanda do a wonderful job. I would try anything on the menu without hesitation and I am sure I would enjoy every bite. read more

As a girl from NYC, I was happily surprised by this house restaurant! While it is off the beaten track, it really gives you the Charleston experience. Sitting on the porch with fabulous cocktails made me feel like one of the locals. I did not try the food, but my server was great. I recommend for anyone visiting trying to take in the historic Charleston ambiance. read more

We were in Charleston to visit our daughter & decided to have a drink before the end of our evening. She suggested Zero George. We decided to sit outside on the back porch where they had lovely couches & chairs with awesome candles for the ambiance. Our server John Cornett was amazing and suggested a couple bottles of wine that might match our tastes. John is an excellent server and was very knowledgeable about the wine. We settled on an excellent bottle and it was perfect ending to our evening. The peligrini was also a nice touch. Thanks So Much! We'll be back!! read more

Totally wonderful place to stay. First and foremost is the concierge service of the front desk people Sam, and Mary Elizabeth. They gave restaurant suggestions, tour guides, sailing excursion, car rentals, and booked reservations. Every suggestion turned out wonderfully. We felt lucky. The hotel has an intimate feel, combining the best of a b&b and a fine resort. The rooms are gracefully modern. Plenty of towels. Twice daily tidying up. Three "Charleston singles ", small buildings arranged around a garden. Lots of electrical outlets for tech items. There is free breakfast in the morning, wine cheese and lattes in the afternoon. There is an open kitchen and we chatted with the chef and another couple as the chef prepared delightful small dishes for dinner. Chef Vinson Petrillo five stars! Tonight's dinner was as good as it gets. We're out from OC CA and have talked to quite a few foodies here at the counters/tables for a week here in Charleston SC and tonight's verdict is in, drum roll please! Zero George Street takes the top of the Hoffman's picks for best in Charleston SC. As a menu planner for over 26 years for OC's finest I am impressed. We had a five course meal tonight and happy are my taste buds. Listen friends, I'm glad I was here because I am sure Zero George Street, Charleston, SC will have everyone looking for the next plate. On an additional note, we have the pleasure of staying at the Zero George Street inn and the staff is a perfect blend of team work that you just can't find anywhere. My taste buds are jumping as the turn down service keeps leaving an array of tasteful treats that excites a foodie! This is our third (four star and above) place to stay this week in Charleston SC and we are Over the top excited for our final choice for the last three nights here. The Zero George changed our little getaway for our anniversary to one of our most remarkable trips ever. I can not say enough about the staff- the Valet and was most helpful with our bags and the car. He was so friendly and always had suggestions for us whenever we asked. When we checked in, the front desk clerk was so accommodating. We felt like we were guests in someone's home. When we saw our room- we had been upgraded (such a wonderful surprise) to the suite in the upstairs carriage house, we were blown away. Such a lovely and comfortable space with living area, and even a desk where my husband could work. The bed was so comfortable- and the linens were luxurious and soft. It was amazing. Before we had arrived I had emailed about possibly having dinner there- since we had heard so much about the food and Open Table didn't really look like there was anything available. I emailed the concierge and she was able to get us in on Friday. The dinner was exquisite. We did the tasting menu and Chef Vinson is nothing short of a magician with food. We honestly had no idea that what started out as a humble little trip to Charleston could lend us so many fantastic surprises. Every Uber we got into was telling us of the fantastic accomplishments of Chef Vinson, and we wholeheartedly agree with them all. He was a winner on Chopped!! The kitchen is tiny, but the food they are able to produce out of that little space is amazing. Even the breakfast, that we were told was just "simple fare", took simplicity to another level. The service from every single person at that hotel was incredible. I can't recommend it enough. read more

What a huge disappointment. I live in charleston and love to show off great new places to visiting friends and clients but I will not go to your place ever again. Here's why. Wednesday at 4:45 I was taking a client out for a celebratory drink. We arrived at your restaurant- the hostess looked at us blankly and I asked if we may have a drink at the bar. She said no - they open at 5. That was it- not a sit here a minute not a thing-while your staff avoided eye contact to finish slurping their last Starbucks coffee drops. Embarrassing. Can not imagine a better place to stay in Charleston! We were recommended by a local friend to stay there and it far exceeded our expectations. It is charming, clean, service is off the chart. The breakfast is awesome, happy hour drinks (try the moneypenny and the award winning Red Scare) and eats are excellent. Room was awesome. Short bike ride in to town and it is nice to be a couple blocks away from the heart of town. But the best thing was eating dinner there. Chef Vinson Petrillo is off the chart good. My wife and I are foodies and have eaten in top restaurants all around the world. This was a top five meal ever. Ordered the Hamachi collar and the pressure cooked Octopus for starters. Had the Snapper and Duck for mains and finished with the Tres Leche cake for dessert. Fantastic! They have a cooking school on Monday nights which was sadly (for us) booked up. We ended up staying here the last night of our trip to Charleston. We extended our trip by a day without thinking to extend our hotel room. Zero George shockingly had one of the few rooms left in Charleston on Memorial weekend. It ended up being a wonderful mistake I wish we had made earlier in the trip. Everything about the hotel was perfect. We had a king on the second floor. The room was decorated in soft blues and whites. The bathroom was fairly large with a nice shower but no bathtub. There was a beautiful balcony overlooking the courtyard. The hotel was within walking distance of great restaurants. As other reviewers stated the staff was friendly and helpful. They called our room to reminded us about the complimentary wine and cheese prior to dinner. We had a issue with our reservation which they promptly resolved. The gentleman at the front desk actually came to our room to discuss it. Our two year old was with us and enjoyed balcony and trips to Saffron bakery next door. read more
