Always good food and laughs when I pick up my weekly half share. And always great company to learn from and share recipes with. Every Tuesday in the summer and fall I pick up a random assortment of fruits and veggies at their West Side home, conveniently located. I look forward to the classics like lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, basil, the "I usually walk by that in the grocery store" items like chard and turnips, and the "I've never seen or eaten that before!" items like garlic scape and kholrabi. And they have eggs to buy, too! The best part is that I never feel stupid asking "what is this?" or "what is the simplest way to cook this?" I love the CSA because it encourages me to experiment in the kitchen and eat many things that I wouldn't otherwise buy at a farmer's market. It's fun, supportive, great community, and makes food an adventure. The farm itself, now in Johnston at the historic Mathewson Farm, is perfectly picturesque. Chickens wander around. The old barn and farm house are charmingly old school in their architecture and wear. As a CSA member, you can choose to pick up your weekly harvest in Johnston or on the West Side of Providence. They make it really convenient, and have a fun blog, too! Matt and Catherine also welcome CSA members to the farm to participate in the farming, whether picking or weeding. It's an educational experience, too. If you're not into CSAs, you're probably already a fan of Red Planet Farm - they supply to Chez Pascal, La Laiterie, Local 121, New Rivers, and Nick's On Broadway, as well as co-ops like Little City Growers and Urban Greens. The helpful and chatty farmer encouraged me to sample the goodies for sale, and was obviously very proud and enjoyed the farm's output. One bite into that raw sweet pepper and I was hooked, nothing like fresh produce! Apparently, this farm gets a lot of local restaurant business, and I had just missed the big rush of restaurant owners that buying at the stand, so next time I plan on making it out earlier to get first dibs on the fresh picks of the day.

This is a review for their CSA only. This was by far the worst CSA I have ever participated in. For…read morebackground I have a degree in sustainable agriculture and worked on farms including ones that offer CSAs for many years. If I had known that approximately a 3rd of the each weeks offerings were pick your own I would not have signed up. Nothing against this model but each week I had to rush over from work without a lot of extra time. I often had to forgo the pick your own which made the overall value of the CSA quite low for those weeks. This is my issue not Casey Farm's but I want other folks to be aware that PYO is a major part of their CSA. That aside the assortment was fairly subpar (yes I am aware they had a lot issues with pests so I'm being lenient on this point) and pick up in the barn was often unorganized with not enough scales or bag points to move through quickly. The prepicked veggies were consistently filthy, like fully covered in dirt. None of the CSAs I worked for would have allowed this. A lot of "seconds" quality veggies in the main pick up area as well. I have no problem with veggies that need to be used quickly or have cosmetic blemishes but for example I saw zucchini that was as hard and woody as a winter squash. Wildly unacceptable as it was inedible. Until the end of the season there was very little information about the pick your own fields. There was often little to no wayfinding information both in the barn or in the fields. Also very little educational information on how to pick these items. For things like ground cherry or tomatillos this is important as many folks might not be aware of what these items look like when ripe. Most folks in the field had to help each other find the right rows and provide picking advice. For example a poor fellow customer was picking very tough old snap peas because the green bean fields weren't marked and she was in the wrong place. The folks in the barn provided very little help in this regard. I have a feeling I wasn't the only person to experience frustration with this as around august they finally starting adding some (although still minimal) instructions in the barn. I fully understand a CSA is meant to support a farm in boom and bust but knowing that Casey Farm is bolstered by Historic New England and their popular children's camp programs I think there are a lot of local farms who deserve financial support over Casey. Overall the CSA felt lazy, disorganized and frankly a rip off. I continually felt like there was very little love for the produce they grew and provided. 0/5 stars would not recommend.

But then I discovered this little gem! This is a smaller market, but I find this to be less overwhelming then the larger ones. There were a lot of farms I was unfamiliar with and they were all very friendly and had plenty of variety to choose from. The prices here are in most cases almost 50% cheaper then what I've seen at Hope St. We walked away with some delicious and sweet corn that was only 35¢ an ear, patty pan squash for 50¢ each, pint of cherry tomatoes for $1.50 . . . you get the idea. We had a fantastic dinner when we got home! So mad at myself for not finding this market sooner, it will certainly make it's way into my weekly shopping routine.

Lots of beautiful fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, delicious apples from their trees, baked goods, local honey, and of course all your fall decorating needs. Pretty mums,corn stalks,pumpkins, gourds you name it. The best part is the prices are affordable compared to other farm stands. I think some of the others price their products way to high but here you get a good value for what you're buying. The man working was very nice and even gave me some twine for my corn stalks. I bought my entire porch display from here (hay,corn stalks,pumpkins,mums)and it looks absolutely perfect. So many compliments and it didn't break the bank. Another little bonus is there is also a deli/meat market attached to the farm stand where you can get specialty items also. Very unique and convenient. Nicely located right off if 116 plenty of parking in a nice part of town. Love it and will continue to give them my business :)
