In efforts to be healthier this year and support our local farmers, we decided to do a farm share…read more Zephyr was one of the only vendors we could find in the Providence area. HOW IT WORKS: A seasonal host in the west end opens their yard every Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00 for pick up. You pay a lump sum in two installments and receive the same number (or weight) of items weekly as everyone doing the share. WHAT IT COST$: For roughly $30 a week, our basket tote was filled with lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, squashes, zucchini, garlic scapes, and other veggies. We added an egg share for an additional $5 a week - convenient. Comes out to about $600 for the season. QUALITY: Everything is fresh but needs to be eaten that week. QUANTITY: I say it's enough produce for 2.5 people eating salad and multiple vegetable sides nightly for dinner. If you're not veggie heavy, you could stretch this to a family of four. VALUE: Not only did we save massive amounts on grocery shopping, but we needed to go to the store far less often AND we really saved because we were eating out much less in efforts to consume all of our produce. VARIETY: food type was lacking (when I compared notes with my sister in law's Boston share) and you'll have to get crafty with garlic scapes as you'll receive at least 20 for the first few weeks of the season. We made a lot of pesto. TIP FOR SHARING: If you're going in with another couple, they recommend you alternate weeks for pick up and keep everything you receive during your week. After all a head of lettuce is a difficult thing to split.

Fresh, beautiful, flavorful and reasonable, I load up on veggies from this stand every Saturday morning. Plump green zebra tomatoes, crisp lettuce, meaty eggplant and delicate miniature squash -- the list goes on and on and everything is top-quality. There are many produce-growers int he area, but I consistently return to Zephyr simply because I've never been disappointed in the quality, and am always impressed by the friendly people who staff their tent. A favorite? Their succulent husk cherry tomatoes. If you'v never tried these guys, do yourself a favor and get them while and when you can. Lots of beautiful fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, delicious apples from their trees, baked goods, local honey, and of course all your fall decorating needs. I think some of the others price their products way to high but here you get a good value for what you're buying. The man working was very nice and even gave me some twine for my corn stalks. I bought my entire porch display from here (hay, corn stalks, pumpkins, mums)and it looks absolutely perfect. So many compliments and it didn't break the bank. Another little bonus is there is also a deli/meat market attached to the farm stand where you can get specialty items also. Very unique and convenient. Always good food and laughs when I pick up my weekly half share. And always great company to learn from and share recipes with. Every Tuesday in the summer and fall I pick up a random assortment of fruits and veggies at their West Side home, conveniently located. I look forward to the classics like lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, basil, the "I usually walk by that in the grocery store" items like chard and turnips, and the "I've never seen or eaten that before!" items like garlic scape and kholrabi. And they have eggs to buy, too! The best part is that I never feel stupid asking "what is this?" or "what is the simplest way to cook this?" I love the CSA because it encourages me to experiment in the kitchen and eat many things that I wouldn't otherwise buy at a farmer's market. It's fun, supportive, great community, and makes food an adventure. The farm itself, now in Johnston at the historic Mathewson Farm, is perfectly picturesque. Chickens wander around. The old barn and farm house are charmingly old school in their architecture and wear. As a CSA member, you can choose to pick up your weekly harvest in Johnston or on the West Side of Providence. They make it really convenient, and have a fun blog, too! Matt and Catherine also welcome CSA members to the farm to participate in the farming, whether picking or weeding. It's an educational experience, too. If you're not into CSAs, you're probably already a fan of Red Planet Farm - they supply to Chez Pascal, La Laiterie, Local 121, New Rivers, and Nick's On Broadway, as well as co-ops like Little City Growers and Urban Greens. And if you know Providence dining, you know that it doesn't get ANY better than the restaurants listed above! And if you're wiling to try a CSA, but the location or pickup dates for Red Planet don't work for you, check out the plethora of other local CSAs to support on the Farm Fresh RI website: http://www.farmfresh.org/food/csa.php?zip=02909
