I had the wonderful experience of reviewing Zen Day in San Francisco this past week. The spa is a cozy salon located in the colorful Haight district of the city. Upon arrival, I was greeted cheerfully by the kind technicians as we went over the services I'd receive. They adhere to all Covid protocols and require mask worn for everyone upon entering. I choose the Aroma-luxe Facial Massage and Essential Pedi w/ Gel Polish. I received my pedicure first and loved absolutely every minute of it. I was treated to a luxurious foot massage that was followed by warm towels and wow.. my feet felt like butter!! My technician was very attentive and took her time to make sure I was comfortable. After the pedi, it was time for my facial. I was ushered upstairs to one of the many private spa rooms. While in the room I was given a fitted towel and headband to change into. The rooms was very spacious and included a facial table as well as a shower for those receiving full body scrubs. The technician prepared me with a light steam and began the facial. The facial was invigorating! I felt my skin tingling from the aromatherapy and a sense of calm as the relaxing music played in the background. The massage was amazing and relieved a lot of my neck and facial tension. I highly recommend for those who sit for a majority of their work day. After the massage was completed, I was handed a warm cup of herbal tea... a perfect ending! The facial massage is 40 minutes and I enjoyed the entire experience. Overall, Zen Day Spa exceeded my expectations! Highly experienced technicians who are professional and cater to their clients needs aren't always easy to find. I discovered Zen Day Spa from a FiveStars recommendation but I was so glad I got my birthday manicure done here with Tracy. They were able to fit me in for an appointment the same day I called. I broke a few of my nails from going to the gym and kickboxing. I was so amazed at Tracy's ability and attention to detail in repairing my nails. She added a tip to my nails, added dip powder to secure the tip, and keep the nails strong and resilient. They don't use acrylic which is awesome because the dipped powder doesn't have the strong, chemical smells and is more flexible and doesn't damage my nails. Tracy takes her time and the results are a gorgeous set of nails that look great and lasts. The entire staffs were very kind and hospitable, they have teas for while you wait. The entire salon is very clean, calm, and quiet. I know Zen Day Spa also does massage, facial, and eyelash extensions services. Perfect place for a fun bachelorette spa day! My friend is getting married in a few months and we decided to come here for a relaxing getaway to get her mind off of the stress of wedding planning. I came across it on yelp after I saw that they cater to a lot of bachelorette parties. I called ahead and was able to schedule our massage/body wraps/mani/pedis very easily. The receptionist was friendly and explained the differences between all of the treatments available. Since they only had one masseuse that day and we wanted to get our treatments at the same time, one of us opted for the 1-hr Swedish massage and the others got the Volcanic body wraps. Afterwards, we got our mani/pedis up on the second floor. The best part about this place is they let you bring whatever food and drinks you want for group get-togethers and they provide the glasses, plates, napkins and utensils! They even set it up on the table so that everything was ready after our treatments which was so nice of them. The mani/pedis were good and the gel actually lasted for a solid 3 weeks before I took them off since they grew out. Barely any chipping at all! It's a little further away than where I usually stay in SF, but I've been to Zen twice now, and for me, it's worth the extra Uber ride. I recently treated myself to a massage and "ultimate" facial. Holy, moly did I feel pampered afterward! Without getting into the boring details, my massage was great and my skin still looks amazing a week and a half later. This day was supposed to be a day to relax because I was stressed out with wedding planning. I came about 15 mins late, but luckily they still accommodated me without any snarky remarks. They even let me use the bathroom before my services. Volcanic wrap: not what I expected. Before starting, I didn't have much time to undress. I know I was late but it was raining and cold outside so I had a lot of layers on. The employee walked in on me standing completely undressed. My friend who did arrive on time said she had to rush also. They have disposable underwear for you to wear but since it's one size fits all, it's definitely weird to wear. This was my first time getting a wrap and I imagined being mummified with paper or fabric dipped in moisturizing oils and cream. That wasn't what happened. The first thing they do is exfoliate with a rough towel and then they exfoliate using a beaded exfoliant. They work their way around limb by limb. Then you shower and while you're in the shower they change the sheets. They give you a shower cap if you don't want to wash your hair and another disposable underwear. It was dark in the shower and I didn't know which was soap vs shampoo. It took me a while to read the bottle. I didn't want the lady to walk in on me again so I showered quickly and hopped back onto the table. The next step was moisturizing my body with oils and massaging me. The massage was definitely rough for my petite frame. I felt like something was going to break or snap. I especially did not like the head massage. The lady kept pressing my temples really hard and I was scared she was going to pop a blood vessel. The next day my back was especially sore to the touch and my temples felt bruised. Pedicure: I asked for a simple French tip pedicure but the lady did not know what that was. She kept talking to the other ladies in a different language and freaking out. The other ladies tried to tell her what I wanted but she was definitely confused. She tried applying one type of nail polish but it wasn't showing up and she had to grab another one. She kept verifying with the other staff that she was doing the right thing. It's pretty bad service if you freak out and make a scene in front a client. She did an okay job for not knowing what she was doing but definitely not worth the $30+ I spent on it. At least she cleaned my nails well. The wrap and pedi cost about $140 cash (you get 10% off when you pay in cash). I tipped both the masseuse and nail tech even though the nail tech didn't really deserve it. If I were to come back, I'd get a mani here. My friends got gel manis and they looked great! (Although, depending on which tech you get, they apply a diff amount of coats. My one friend got 4 coats on one hand and 5 coats on the other lol the other friend only got 3 coats on each hand.) Another positive about this spot is they let your bring your own food. It was mainly a lot of elbow pressure which I don't like, but in fairness the technique wasn't spelled out. I showed the person at the desk the description of the massage on the website; he said that the employees do their own take on everything. My girlfriends threw my Buttday Spa Day here at Zen (THANKS GIRLS!). It was so nice that we were able to set up a 'munchies' area in their lobby area, complete with cheese, salamis, crackers, cookies, fruits and they even had a champagne stand to cool our champagne and sparkling cider with. It was all a very nice touch. I had my massage with Miyako. She was very quiet but man, her hands were amazing! It was sooo relaxing I was trying so hard to stay awake so I could enjoy the massage! The heated bed was divine. Her hands were just so soft yet effective in getting all my knots out! I walked out there like a wet noodle! It was FABULOUS! The party lasted from 10am-3pm. Quite a long time but they were very gracious in making sure we had everything right for our party (ice, cups, plates, napkins, etc). Towards the end, they surprised us with a buttday cake for me which was from Schubert's bakery. It was a type of cream puff vanilla custard cake that was so light, fluffy, flakey and so divine. The massage chair got into all the many knots on my back and the heated neck warmer was a great touch that almost put me to sleep when I was getting the foot and leg massage. I had the worst nail salon experience in my life at this place! The $55 price tag for a deluxe pedicure is a major rip off. My nail tech would stop every couple of minutes for the first 20 minutes to answer the phone. Never removed her gloves or changed into new ones after touching the phone. The tools were already scattered on the portable shelf. I wasn't 100% sure if they were clean and sanitized. I'm still mad at myself for not walking out at the beginning of all of this. The nail tech cut my nails so they looked slanted! She did not clean the cuticles and tried to use the foot blade on me when I noticed white particles on the blade. Luckily I stopped her from using that to avoid getting an infection! To top it all off, my nail polish chipped after two days. You can seriously go anywhere else and get better service. In light of covid-19, it's been a hot second since I've been able to get my nails done and let me tell you it was everything I could have wanted and then some. Zen day spa has always been extremely clean and organized, but they have 100% kicked it up due to COVID-19. Everything is appointment based, which limits the number of individuals in the spa at one time. Before you can sit down or chose your polish colors, you'll have your temperature checked and be asked to wash your hands. Masks are worn at all times, by everyone. Once you've got your polish colors chosen you can sit down and enjoy the beautiful work that these women all do! When getting a pedicure done, there was a plastic divider and as soon as I was off the pedicure chair, it was thoroughly sanitized. MAJOR shout out to Tracy who has me walking out of the spa feeling like a million bucks with her work. I'm a HUGE fan of dip and I have NEVER left the salon disappointed with Tracy's work. It always amazes me how carful she is with my nails, she truly takes her time and the effort shows in how immaculate and beautiful my nails look. I love coming here and am absolutely thrilled that they are open again. I hope people do their part to keep this place going as it is one of the most amazing, if not the most amazing, spas in the city. You can't beat the skill that these women all have! read more

I'm only giving this place two starts because the décor is nice, and the receptionist was very friendly. I arrived to my appointment on time, in fact I even arrived a little early. I sat down upstairs ready for my manicure. I asked the lady who was helping me if they had pink glitter (I could see some on another table, that a girl who had already finished her manicure had just used). The lady told me no, they don't have it, so I agreed to just used the gold glitter I had already brought up. Then as she started removing my nail polish another client walked in and hugged the lady that was helping me and sat right next to me. I'm assuming she was a regular because after this the lady who was helping me proceeded to rush through my manicure. She forgot to file two of my nails, which I reminded her about. All nails on my left hand were filed crooked, and when she started to apply the nail polish the application was very uneven. There were a couple of more things that I wasn't happy about, but what disappointed me the most was that I had told her that I wanted a few coats of the gold glitter by itself on my ring finger. She said no, this is better, and started to put on the color and planned to put glitter on top. Before she put the glitter on, I said you know you are clearly in a hurry to get to your next client so just leave it without glitter. I was not happy with the treatment because I had an appointment and it's not my fault that they either double booked me or the other client showed up early. For all they know, I could've become a regular too.... I was also not happy with the service, so I will not be going back. Sorry for the long winded review. Threw a bday spa event over the weekend and I must say, Zen did a wonderful job in taking care of my girls! Prior to this event, Trang was my contact person and she was a delight to work with. I simply emailed her with my specifics: 8 girls to be scheduled between 10am to 3pm; food will be provided. Once I was able to confirm the types of services each girl wanted, Trang provided me with a schedule and cost breakdown! It was that simple! Because of our large party, they blocked off the entire lobby area for us. There is a long, narrow table in front of the window shop where we set up our food/drinks. As we waited for our services, the girls were free to "chillax", sipping on champagne, sparkling cider, munching on cheese, crackers, fruits, and the like. It was such a pleasant experience to the say the least. Rae was our coordinator the day of and was very accommodating to our needs. As far as their services goes: I requested a swedish massage. I'm not sure what to think of it. I thought swedish is rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes. It was nothing like that at all! LOL! I also distinctly remember a sharp pain from where the woman was pushing against the nape of my neck. It was sore the next couple of days. The individual rooms are dark and seems relaxing but the walls are very thin. You can hear outside conversations and footsteps. With private parties, Zen provides a delicious cake and champagne/glasses - I was not aware of this till the day of and unfortunately, we brought in our own. Wish I was told earlier. Nonetheless, it was a great bday celebration. I would have given it 5 stars...but parking is a PAIN!!!!! Had a great experience at Zen. Got the papaya body scrub and Tracy (Traci?) did an amazing job! They were able to accommodate us even though we came an hour early for our appointment. I actually knew nothing going into the appointment since this was my first time at a spa. So she gives you some time to strip and put on the disposable underwear and get under the sheets. You get under the sheets face down. Then she used the body scrub and went section by section. The body scrub went on warm which I liked. I have psoriasis and it wasn't too rough over my psoriasis patches. Then they have you get in the shower to wash the scrub off and you hop back under the sheets for the second part where they massage some body lotion into your skin. On a whim, my friend suggested we get mani-pedis. Perfectly reasonable for a Sunday afternoon, and we were able to book a spot without any fuss. I've had one other pedi in my life, so relied on the staff and my mate to guide me in this process. Things I have learned: there are endless shades and types of nail varnish. This is an important step in the process and one must take time to pick the right colour. There are right and wrong brands of varnish. The staff were all lovely and helpful, the ambience was incredibly relaxing, and I like that you can bring your own drink to fancy up the event. In all, a mani-pedi took an hour and came to around $60 with tip -- I assume that's standard? No idea. I guess, for the experience of having your hands and feet massaged as well as filed and then painted perfectly, that's pretty reasonable. I'd recommend! read more

She apologized for the bad experience and asked me to come in again for a free mani pedi which I appreciated. I finally came in today and was pleasantly surprised at how attentive the lady was while doing my manicure pedicure. Everything was fine I was happy with the service but yet again... After looking at my in better light... (It's pretty dim in there).. My nails the 2nd cost wasn't applied evenly and once I got in the shower noticed she had cut me during the mani and pedi. This is a late review, my appointment was on my birthday--March 9th. I'm writting this review mainly because my mom insists that I do , she owns a chain of spas and is also a massage therapist. I will allow a star because my nails were done pretty nicely with gel, but they did charge me extra for having my nails painted French tips. When they were filing my nails they did not move my water that I was drinking.. all of the dusty nail particles just fell in the cup. I noticed it and wonder how many clients they've taken care of have drank a beverage with nails in it. It grossed me out. I had a female massage therapist and let me say, it was the worst experience I've ever had. I actually CRIED after I left the spa because I felt so cheated. I paid around a hundred for a bad massage--rescheduled from the original time (okay, wasn't too mad about it because I am understanding) and rushed. I went to go use the bathroom before the massage and she literally KNOCKED on the door when I had just gotten in. She tells me she needs to start the massage and for me to be quick because she has another appointment. RED FLAG. The massage-- she didn't even massage me. It was very quick and she didn't even massage my feet, neck or head. She paid no attention to my body and the healing I much needed. I think she may have been germophobic.. for my legs and feet all she did was put a towel on them and squeezed-- the way you would squeeze your hair after showering. She did the same with my head, put a towel on and used her fingers and tapped/ squeezed. My mother owns a chain of spas outside SF and I have been getting massages ever since I was little. I have never received such a lazy massage. I am very clean and if I choose to spend $150 for a spa day, you better believe I take care of myself. Instead, I was treated like I was a street kid that walked in from golden gate park. Anyway, what really bugged me was that she put a towel over my face when I flipped over. I seriously felt like I was suffocating. I did not understand what the heck was going on.. I still don't get it. Over my eyes? Yes. Over my whole entire face to make breathing difficult? Unnecessary and uncomfortable. I got a massage from this place 2 years ago and it was super great. I called in making an appointment for my birthday and asked for the best they got. I got this. By the way, the massage room was wide open when I left for a bathroom break from getting my nails done. Was I rushed for no reason?
