Well if you've done a lot of shopping or printing you will find that the branches are actually not as cookie cutter as you'd think. First of all, we all have color printers and they do a decent job of printing but no where near as good as the printing you will have done on the color printer behind the counter. You'd be amazed at the sharpness of the colors and the range of colors. One of the things I like is that they are able to help tweak PDFs you bring in. So if you don't have it saved with enough space at the edge they can fix that for you. Also, I liked that they also let me review the copies before having them run off. I've gotten brochures made here and I like the selection of paper they have available as far as quality and thickness. If you are not sure what type of paper to use they are really good at making recommendations. I've also had cards and other items made with card stock and all of those were perfect. Tre staff here are always polite and friendly. They offer good customer service and are very quick at getting the work done. I'd recommend opening an account here and getting the discount. It really ads up if you do a lot of printing.

Alphagraphics

Belltown, Interbay

This company only gets one star because I couldn't do zero…read more I called Alphagraphics on a Friday morning and spoke to a Chris Kelsey. I asked about turn around time for offset printing 1000-2000 12-page catalogs. He told me they would need a couple of days and that before the job could be started I would need a quote. I sent him a request for quote with all of the details seconds after ending the call. The following Tuesday morning I finally received an e-mail quote from Chris. Then I brought my completed PDF's in later that day. I was surprised that the quote was triple the cost of their competition, and that he had added tax to the quote despite my inclusion of our resale certificate with the original e-mail. When I brought my PDF's in I asked about the pricing and a different person, Aaron, said that Chris had quoted for digital printing. I guess Chris didn't listen during the phone call, or read the e-mail before providing a quote because both were requests for offset printing. Then Aaron told me that digital printing was better anyway because they would do a physical proof of the exact booklet. Aaron told me that I would need to talk to Chris about all of this and that the person who provides the quote is who you work with for the whole job. Aaron said he would let Chris know everything we talked about. I left my PDF's and called Chris in the morning. Chris had no idea who I was, or where my PDF's were. We got straightened out and he said he would have a proof ready shortly. The next day, now Thursday, I receive an e-mail with a PDF proof that I am instructed to approve ASAP. I ask about the physical proof Aaron promised and Chris says we don't have time for that, because of my deadline. That he could only do flat sheets, maybe. Later that day Chris calls so I can come in and approve flat sheets. I do. My catalogs are ready to pick up on Friday afternoon. The box is sealed. There is another woman there complaining about the business cards they've made for her. The ink is literally rubbing off from the gentle friction of the cards being together in the same box. They tell her they will have a hard time fixing it because of her deadline. I take a look at the catalogs over the weekend. All of the thinner inside pages have doubled text in a gradient improving from left to right. The text at the left side of the page had a double of about 1/16th of an inch and there's no issue on the right side of the page. This problem was not on the digital PDF proof I approved. After 15 years of hiring print shops I can see that this is likely a paper feed issue. I took the catalogs back to Alphagraphics and asked about the issue. Chris found the person who worked on the print part of the job. She asks what dpi, I say 500. She says this is a Photoshop PDF issue and that without having made the entire document herself she has no way to say that this wasn't this way in the PDF file. This was not on the PDF proof Alphagraphics provided. I asked her to explain how Photoshop would make a gradient of bad quality from left to right. She said she didn't know because she hadn't made the file and it was obviously a mistake in the file. She said that we hadn't hired Alphagraphics to do the graphic design for this project so they couldn't guarantee the print quality, that it could only have been a problem with the original file. I ask her again to carefully explain how Photoshop could make a file which results in a gradient of bad quality from left to right. She says again that it is possible, and that the only way to ensure it doesn't happen is to have Alphagraphics make the files. I said "I think you are full of shit." Chris said "We're not going to fix any of our mistakes if you're going to have that attitude." And I said "That's not a problem because I know exactly how to complain." Chris then clenched his jaw, turned red, leaned across the counter, stared into my eyes and said "I have some suggestions for what could happen to you if you do." I left. Bad service, lies, insane prices, horrible print quality, and then a threat to keep you from complaining. Maybe Chris eventually realized it wasn't okay to threaten clients, or someone in the office saw it happen and intervened, because later I received an e-mail from Chris that said: "I'm sorry that you are unhappy with your guides. I am still trying to figure out what happened and if we did anything wrong, we will re-print them at no cost to you. I'll get back to you by tomorrow. In the meantime; perhaps so could send us the native files." Too little, too late, please do not threaten clients and then expect them to cooperate with you. I wouldn't go back to Alphagraphics if someone paid me to. You don't have to guess how bad the print quality was because I've added an image to show you.

Stay away from this company with a 100 foot pole. They have a totally unprofessional staff. They…read moredon't seem to understand the basics of print or prepress and it unfortunately shows within the first few minutes of discussion with them about your project. Also a word of warning. Don't send them a file for a quote. They will bill you for a proof, even if you decline their services because of the poor quality. In our case the "proof" was a run of the mill office quality laser print. If you want real professional printing seek another provider. It's a shame as Capitol Hill could use a good local neighborhood printer however CK graphics simply isn't up to the job. Our business has moved on. Totally unsatisfactory.

Great customer service. Helpful and honest advice. Friendly folks who were perfectly willing to…read moretalk options or make recommendations. For what I got, very reasonable pricing. A little over a week ago, my cat decided to water test my laptop. Long story short, a glass of water spilled into (!) my laptop. The laptop sat immersed in this pool of water for nearly 20 hours. Everything was complete toast. Although most of my files are in the cloud, especially the most important ones, I decided there might be the occasional file or folder that I might not notice tomorrow or even a year from now. I decided it would be best to retrieve the contents of the drive on the laptop for peace of mind. I left the laptop with them to do an assessment first. That assessment was ~$80. After their assessment, they indicated that the contents of the drive were retrievable and gave me an estimate of $400 to retrieve the contents of the drive (the $80 would apply to that figure). I decided it was worth the cost, if for nothing more than that elusive peace of mind. I also needed a drive to put the contents on (or provide my own). Since I didn't have one, and didn't want to bother with purchasing a 3rd party drive, they charged me $140 for a Toshiba Portable Storage device. So, for about $600 (w/ tax) I got everything off the lost drive. Was it worth it? Without a doubt. Would I go back? Hell yeah.

They make it next to impossible to connect with anyone from just trying to find them on Roosevelt to no one answering the phone when you call them repeatedly just to make an appointment. They couldn't say more clearly, "We don't want you!" Stay away from them, they're not for you.

Logos and branding (especially really early on in a business) are so personal to the people who started the business and I really felt like the suggestions captured my essence! I get so many compliments on our branding and I cannot recommend Chalkbox enough! I sing there praises all the time! Some specifics on my pleasure with the process are: 1. The intake covered all of the specifics I needed and offered Chalkbox a scope to work with 2. The quoted price was reasonable and along the lines of what I expected to pay for the services 3. Engagement documents were sent quickly and were easy to read, understand, and sign 4. I was given a general timeline and the overall time of the project exceeded my expectations 5. I felt known and seen through the process and felt like all options presented were representative of me and my business from my own perspective but with the importance of design in mind 6. All of the discussions from intake to completion were taken into account to provide the final options - including fonts and colors 7. My daughter's tattoo was finished quickly and she is very happy with it, and I am IN LOVE with my tattoo. It took longer, but I am so glad the artist (Julia Franka) took her time and made sure I approved of the colors and the changes and additions she wanted to make. She also took quite a bit of time making sure we were happy with our font choices. Even though the two tattoo artists had their own style, they worked very well together and made the process seamless and fun. We are already planning our next tattoos, and can't wait to come back again!
