Time to add another star. It is rare for me to visit the same restaurant three times in a week, but Zayane is perfectly located in walking distance to my office and the half price offer just too tempting ... actually, nothing much else is going on along Golborne Road on a Monday.
I loved last week's lamb dish and was happy to see that it was still on the working lunch menu. For some strange reason the caramelised onion was missing; we later learned that the chef wasn't happy with last week's version and made some improvements (they didn't amend the menu). He was right, today's lamb machoui was even tastier (my cut was not as lean which was a shame), the potato gratin fresh (perhaps it's fresh on Mondays and then gets reheated? it definitely tasted reheated on Friday, it's quite obvious with potatoes), the gravy more generous.
Even though I loved the babaganoush before, I decided to opt for a desert as second course (main course only option at £15 is no longer available which is a shame). The marshmallow/mango concoction tasted just as lovely as it looks on the photo.
Apparently, a chicken tagine will be added to the set menu later this week - tempted already ...
As I'm not much of a lunchtime drinker I didn't even notice that they don't (yet) have a licence. I actually think this is a benefit, albeit a bit unusal for a restaurant at this level - a high class BYO!
Still holding off that final star as service not quite there yet ... read more
