I liked it and I'd go back. It's a small place, we ate on the dining side not the bar side. The waitress was really nice and attentive. Overall it was clean, the bathroom was clean, the floors were clean and even peeking into the kitchen it appeared clean. Food was solid and the strawberry margarita was made right.. not too sweet! This was better than we expected. Being from Worcester we've seen and been to a lot of restaurant. Zarape restaurant is on a back road, street parking only and looks like a hole in the wall. Don't let looks fool you, the staff are amazing, kind and very attentive. The food. We were delighted to hear that their food is fresh and home made. Tortillas made to order just added to the experience. I had the vegetable taco salad. Loaded with freshness I left with a full belly! My husband was very pleased at the quality of food as well. Adorable family owned business. The food portions were immense, chips were house-fried (I don't think the tortillas are homemade), and the food was all tasty. The staff is super friendly. The beer selection is weak at best, but I went for the tacos, not the beer. I got the pork tacos and the seasoning on it was out of this world. This was our first time at this Mexican restaurant. The decor of this restaurant reminded me of another Mexican restaurant we have been to in Page, Arizona. They welcomed us with warm tortilla chips and freshly made salsa and they both were very tasty. We ordered Mojarra Frita which is fried whole tilapia and Carne Asada which is grilled marinated steak. Both were served with rice, refried beans, sour cream, corn tortilla & guacamole. Mojarra Frita was a huge portion for one and it was perfectly fried and crispy. The steak was also very tender and delicious. The restaurant is very clean and the service was good. I am pretty sure that they run full-house for dinner and in the weekends. Plenty of paking on either side of the street. I will definitely recommend this place for authentic Mexican food. read more

I walked in last night to this restaurant for the first time and thought right away how pretty it was inside. Bright, vibrant colors and everything looked beautiful. I would say 25% of the restaurant was filled at this point (it did fill up briefly during the night). I went to sit at the bar while waiting for my two friends, and was greeted by a sullen bartender. No smile. No hello. I ordered my drink and noticed him grab something from a server's hand rather hostilely (she looked stunned). I went to the table to wait for my friends and noticed not one of the servers and staff were smiling. Everyone looked intense and unhappy. Service was so rushed and the food was just placed down quickly while they rushed away. My friends and I felt a weird vibe and I'm not sure what was going on with the staff. The food was good and I enjoyed my Taco Salad. The shrimp and steak were cooked nicely. I would definitely come back and try other food items, and I hope the manager trains the staff to be more friendly and engaging. "You have to try Zarape". I heard this from various sources and you know I had to face the reality that I had preconceived notions about the location of this restaurant. The building always kind of seemed questionable and admittedly I avoided this restaurant for years. But, I kept hearing "You have to try Zarape". So, I put aside my preconceived ideas and drove to Zarape but met with a closed sign and realized they were renovating. So, I returned two weeks later to experience what everyone had been talking about. We went at lunch time and there was one other table being served inside the restaurant and maybe two table occupied outside. So, not a lot of customers. The restaurant being recently renovated smelled like the wood section of Home Depot and the space was much larger than you would ever think from the outside appearance. It was very open and I just thought "wish they had booths" because I hate sitting in one giant open space. I hate hearing other tables talking and sounds just amplify in these spaces. But, the restaurant appeared clean and we were met quickly by our server. I ordered a Margarita with salt and no salt came but this was quickly corrected and the Margarita was incredibly weak- maybe just a hint of tequila if even that. The complementary nachos were sadly stale and cold with very watery salsa. The kind of salsa that your dip just runs off the chip leaving a mere hint of salsa. Really not at all enjoyable. I had a chicken burrito and it came with beans that well sadly had the appearance of well nothing really..and sort of tasteless. The chicken burrito was in my opinion tiny lacking in content and seriously minimal filling,. I was very underwhelmed. In fact I thought of amazing burritos I've had at other restaurants and felt kind of let down by all the hype I heard about this restaurant. With Mexican restaurant popping up just about everywhere, I'll try my luck somewhere else. Maybe I just missed this restaurant when it was really special and it needs to find itself again. read more

From beginning to end, the food was underseasoned. With Mexican food, one wants an explosion of flavors. This food was a disappointment. Fish tacos were redolent of a fishy odor and taste. Don't judge this book by its cover. Hubby and I were craving Mexican food on our way home from golf, and this place was on the way. When we pulled up, I was dubious - it's in the middle of a random street and from the outside, it didn't look nice at all. However, when we stepped in we were greeted with good music, a bustling dining room, and a friendly host who cleared a table and seated us right away. Being from the west coast and knowing how hard it is to find legit Hispanic food on the east coast.. Zarape did not disappoint. El pastor burritos, papusas, asada tacos, chicken chimichangas.. even the beans and rice on their own was very flavorful, actually seasoned correctly! Food is delicious, authentic, served steaming hot, out of sight flavors, crunchy chips & tostados (not soggy like some places), good-flavored & textured salsa, terrific service (friendly, helpful waitress), food served within a short time after ordering, and liked the authentic Mexican decor throughout the restaurant, as well as the Mexican music played at just the right volume (not too loud or soft). I discovered this place on Yelp and this was probably my fifth of sixth time there....and it was even more delicious than on previous occasions! We started with the chicken nachos and those were the best nachos I've ever had. Ever. Very different than nachos I usually get at restaurants where there is a mountain of chips and the top chips have all the toppings on them and the chips below are dry and tasteless. Instead, these, had chips in just one or two layers topped with this wonderful sauce (not salsa) and the chicken was seasoned to perfection. Every bite was delicious. We also got entrees -- enchiladas and flautas -- but we were so full from the nachos we took most of the entrees home, but what we ate was very tasty. I especially enjoyed the refried beans... another surprise because I usually skip them. But these were too good to resist. And, oh, thier chips, homemade salsa and guacamole were also first rate. I can't say enough great things about Zarape. The food is incredible and it seemed like they were at my door 3 minutes after I hung up the phone. Tonight I had one of the specials, chicken and spinach enchiladas with a mini veggie quesadilla. Insane how delicious they were. Everything always is. Many of the margaritas are made with fresh squeezed lemon, lime, oranges and ground peels and freshly ground cinnamon. Pride in each drink made by the bartender. Great location. On street parking - be respectful of neighbors and their driveways. Bar area is kitschy, fun and cozy. You can eat in the bar, dining area or outdoor seating. We ate outside and would highly recommend it. Fun music plays off an iPod docking station from the next yard over. Which I assume is the business owner' house. Ambiance is laid back, no rushing. Food is authentic, perfectly spiced and portions are big. The fajitas are mounded high and on the spicy side. But loved that. Would recommend this little hidden gem to anyone. read more

Let me start by saying this is my first time in the Boston area, and I was looking for a restaurant near my hotel and found an "authentic Mexican" restaurant review for a restaurant with 4 stars and thought... MARGARITAS!!! YAY!!! When I pulled up, I was kind of scared. From the outside, the place looks a little shady, but once I walked inside I felt very comfortable and at ease. It was Taco Tuesday, so I got 2 Asada Tacos and 1 Fish Taco and a very yummy Patron Silver Margarita. The bartender and staff were very polite and genuine. The food was AMAZING!!! I didn't quite care for their style of chips and salsa... but with tacos yay good, who cares!!! And I mean it. The tacos were THAT GOOD!!! OMG!!! Do not expect the Ritz. My margarita glass had a chip out of the base. But, there is a great brick ledge for your feet when you sit at the bar, and they have the best Latin music playing. I came here a few times for lunch and they have some good lunch specials. Carne asada plate is a good value ($11). It comes with guac, salad, rice, beans, a decent sized piece of thin steak, and tortillas on the side. Food comes out in a huge plate and VERY hot! The meat is marinated with nice seasoning. Rice and beans are pretty standard. It fills me up every time! I also tried the horchata and wasn't a fan. It was too perfume-y/fragrant and grainy. They have a number of veggie dishes, but NOTE: their rice is made with chicken broth. Their chips and salsa are so so bomb. Service is friendly and reasonably quick.
