I was in the area to detail my car, and decided to have some lunch with a friend while I waited. There weren't too many options around, and we didn't want anything too heavy so Mexican it was. It was a weekday afternoon, so it was just my and my friend, with one other party there. Since the weather was nice, we decided to sit at their outdoor tables - both indoor and outdoor spaces are big with lots of tables. Some of the tables are in the sun and others in the shade so there are options. They had some lunch specials and a taco Tuesday special so we shared a chimichanga, and two tacos. We had their al pastor and carne asada tacos. To change it up, we went with the chicken chimichanga. While we waited, our waitress brought out some complimentary chips and salsa to munch on. The tacos were tasty, although the meat was a little dry. The tacos were on the smaller end, but also only $2 each. The chimichanga I was not a fan of. The plate looked big, but in reality it wasn't too much food. It did come with beans and rice which I was not expecting, but also, the chimichanga was only filled with shredded chicken, so this must have been the rest of the filling. The chicken, rice, and beans were very bland, and there was too much tortilla (as a result of only being slightly stuffed). Also, it was not deep fried like it should be. I stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon, was promptly seated and brought some chips and salsa. They had a lunch special in which you could choose two items served with rice and beans for $12.99. I asked if I could order two enchiladas and was told no, it needed to be two different items which honestly makes absolutely no sense to me but I ended up getting one enchilada with shredded beef and a chicken tostada. I've had some shredded beef where it was completely tasteless and dry but this was neither of those. The tostada was pretty good but nothing really stood out about it. The beans were cooked well but could have used just a little more spice. The salsa was really fresh and I appreciated they served enough where I didn't have to ask for another. All in all I would probably have given a 4 if not for the inflexibility with the item choice... a person should be able to get two tacos/enchiladas/etc. read more

I went for a paint night (SBT Designs) last night. It was clean with nice modern decor. Our waitress was so personable. The veggie quesadillas and drinks were excellent. My friends and I were kind of stuck in the corner despite there being plenty of empty tables. But overall a good experience. read more

I met several of my Aunts and Uncles for lunch at Zarape's. I will update my review when I get the name of the waitress from my Uncle Bob, but she was super sweet and attentive. He and my Aunt have had her as a waitress before and sang her praises. She definitely recognized them. I want to make sure she gets recognized for being great. It was a nice day and we sat on the outside patio. Very nice atmosphere with plenty of table space and umbrellas. As I mentioned, the staff was very attentive. They regularly came around to check on all of us and brought us refills of chips and salsa. I did get up to use the bathroom at one point, and it was VERY clean and spotless. The entire restaurant from what I saw also looked very clean and tidy. It did take a little while for the food to come to the table, but we had been snacking on refills of chips and salsa. I got the steak fajitas and, for Massachusetts Mexican food, they were very good. The ONLY reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is because I've lived in both Texas and most recently in an area of North Carolina with a prevalant Mexican population. The quality and portion size were great but the flavors and seasonings that I've become accustomed to just weren't there. We went to Zarape last night for the first time after seeing it featured on Phantom Gourmet. The restaurant is definitely in an unexpected location (aka a bit of a hidden gem) and had recently undergone a renovation within the last 2 years. The restaurant was VERY clean and had beautiful exposed wood and high ceilings. We went on the later side (arrived around 7:45 and the restaurant was scheduled to close at 9:00 I believe) so there were only 3 other occupied tables and 2 other couples at the bar. Despite arriving late, we never felt rushed or hurried by the staff. The servers and bartender were all friendly and attentive and genuinely thanked us on our way out. Immediately upon sitting down we were greeted and offered complimentary chips and homemade salsa. I ordered the chile mango margarita which was large and delicious! The mango tasted fresh and it was served with a tajin rim. Yummy! We started with the queso fundido (w/ chorizo, peppers, onions) which was delicious. We chose to use some self control and decided to take home at least half of the appetizer so as to ensure we left enough room for dinner. The real star of the show were the Zarape fajitas which came out piping hot (as they should!) and were served with mixed peppers, onions, chicken, shrimp, steak AND chorizo. The fajitas came with warm tortillas and a separate plate of refried beans, Spanish rice, sour cream, and guacamole. They were DELICIOUS. We ended up taking quite a bit home as leftovers as we were both getting full (we had also shared some $2 tacos earlier ). On Tuesdays they offer $2 tacos (different specials/deals depending on the day of the week) - we chose to try 4 of the 5 options. The tacos were simple, but good (meat, cilantro and chopped onions). I personally like a little bit more variety/toppings on my tacos but for $2/piece I am definitely glad we tried them. I would recommend the mango margarita and fajitas as those were my two favorites. We were shocked at how inexpensive our total was - especially given the amount of food we ordered and how fresh everything tasted. Our total, for 2 people, came to under $70 (before tip) but that included 1 large margarita, 1 NA beer, 1 appetizer (with leftover to bring home), 4 tacos ($2/each because we went on Tuesday), and a HUGE serving of fajitas (enough leftovers for 2 people to have another meal). I can't speak to how busy it gets at other times/days of the week but I really hope that this restaurant continues to do well. I was looking forward to trying Zarape because I love Mexican cuisine and seeing the positive Yelp reviews got me intrigued and hungry. Sadly the food is very underwhelming - no flavor, a significant lack of seasonings, spices and fresh ingredients. The meat tasted stale and was very flavorless (both the chicken and steak tacos). The refried beans were very bland and the salsa lacks taste and spice. The guacamole was the best part of the taco plate and felt like the only fresh ingredient on the plate. Zarape This is a local Mexican restaurant in Marlboro, Massachusetts. There was street parking, but it was hard to find a space. Hispanic music plays in the background. The chairs are colorful and carved and the tables have large pictures of a Mexican scene. Our table wobbled a lot. Our waitress was attentive but did not wear a mask, but the other waitress that worked the room did. There were two separate rooms. The room we were in had two television sets at each end to watch sports. All that said, the food was very good. Our drinks came out quickly, but there was a wait for the food. Our waitress did bring us refills on chips as we waited. I ordered the beef quesadilla and explained I had an onion allergy and they were careful to make sure my meal was onion free. It was delicious. The tortilla was crispy and my steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It came with refried beans and red rice which was also very good. My daughter got the tamales and she cleaned her plate. Hers also came with the red rice and refried beans. My mother enjoyed her chicken sandwich. All in all this is a good restaurant. read more

Since I've come home, I've struggled to find an authentic Mexican restaurant. I struggle no longer! This gem is making all their food to order with clearly family recipes. First visit - I had seen the positive reviews on Yelp and have been wanting to try this place for a while. My wife and I went to a late weekday lunch, so it was pretty empty in the restaurant. We tried two of their lunch specials - carnitas enchiladas w/ red and green sauce and spinach and chicken quesadillas. Both were served with rice and beans for $7.99 and they brought us homemade fried flour tortilla chips and salsa to start. Neither dishes were spicy or overly salty, but the carnitas was well seasoned and we really enjoyed it. Great value, fun decor, friendly staff, good food and portions. We'll definitely be back. Back again - Giant Burrito with triple sauce. Another great lunch. Tons of meat and the variety of sauces was nice - a sweet, mild, mole, a medium heat chili verde, and a spicy red chili sauce. The old saying "don't fix what isn't broken" applies here. This once cozy and fun authentic restaurant used to be a great "go to" when we needed a good margarita and Mexican food. You felt like you were in Mexico and mama was cooking your food. We followed them from when they were in Framingham, and dined there often. Last night we unfortunately paid lots of money for a sad and disappointing dining experience in the "newly renovated" dining room that looks one step above the high school cafeteria, and the food quality was about the same caliper. The noise level was awful and the cozy nice ambiance of the old place is gone. We were heartbroken on how this could have happened!!! I asked if it was new management but waitress said NO. So if you read old good reviews about this place, they no longer apply. Food was poor (5 of us, and nobody had anything good to say about the food) the refried beans looked like a dish of brown Elmer's glue and a thimble full of rice with no flavor or texture. The fajitas meat was tough and odd. Nachos had no significant toppings, a dribble of this or that and mostly chips. All in all, sad to have this great establishment plummet so drastically into a disappointing dining adventure. read more

Hadn't been here in AGES. A local favorite for very cheap yet delicious eats. No, they don't hand make their tortillas. They would need a production plant to handle the volume, because the place PACKS and its every plate flying out like a mad sales! Margaritas are ok. A lot of the locals swear these are the best they have ever had. Nope. BUT they hit the Margarita spot. Not the best. Not the worst. Food comes out hot and fresh. I LOVE their frijoles. SOOO good. Try the super greasy "queso fundido" with a hefty dose of chorizo. Heart clogging deliciousness. The place is tight and small, so get there early, particularly if you have little ones. Like - BEFORE 530 on a Friday or Saturday night. And PLEASE don't let your little ones unattended in the bathroom. The VERY RUDE "anglo" family sitting next to us, with the loud and obnoxious dad, let little precious into the toilet area and they had to close it down. The mess was everywhere. BAD patron. Service was really good, and food came quickly. Food has a nice fresh vibe, more filling than you think. The tacos may look small, but there are 3, and they are solid and tasty. They let me have one of each kind on their taco plate, which is great if you like to mix and match. The beef is not ground, it is probably stewed which was good texture, soft not stringy. Liked the flavor of the rice and beans as well. I remembered the Papusa being good, and I ordered it off their small plate list, and it came as a single papusa with a light slaw on the side. Think of it as a hearty tapas serving size at a nice price, so if you wanted to eat a bit here and there during a game at the bar, the small plate menu section is a great place to taste your way through and have fun. If I were being picky . . . My wife thought the rice could have been cooked a little softer for her taste. I suppose the beans could have had a bit more texture. The side slaw for the Papusa was good, but lacked a distinctive flair. I've driven by this place quite a few times and never stopped in because it truly looked like a hole in the wall. It kinda' is, but I made a big mistake by not stopping in sooner. Came here the day before Cinquo de Mayo and this place was hopping. Seemed pretty authentic as most everyone working seemed to speak Spanish. Every table was filled but the turnover was quick. We were pleasantly seated by Jose aka "Ernie" who took our drink order and rushed off, sweat beading on his brow. He was racing around making sure everyone was happy and getting served. Great attention. The drinks were reasonably priced and came with chips and salsa. So, I fell in love with, yes, their chairs. They have the most fabulously colorfully-painted carved wooden chairs with varying Mexican themes. Even the tables were artfully colorful. When our lunch arrived I was almost shocked to find the veggie enchilada was actually filled with fresh veggies ~ including broccoli, onions, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms and leafy greens. Not your typical enchilada that's just filled with beans, rice, and cheese. Although they did have plenty of beans, rice, and cheese on the dish. This was totally AWESOME! I was thrilled. Ernie checked in throughout our meal to make sure we didn't need anything and that everything was to our liking. I am looking forward to coming back here soon! I have been here plenty of times and the taste has not changed. Same delicious food every time I have come here. It is difficult for restaurants to keep consistent in taste, flavor, and spicy level. Really cute. Bar ledge too narrow. Salsa needs more spice but fresh and light. Quesadilla huge and excellent butteryyet light. Rice flavorful. Guacamole watery I had long wanted to visit the terrible looking dive bar that was once in this space, but, alas, I missed my window. This place is really cute and definitely had a Mexican feel to it. I sat at the bar since I was by myself and I found the bar to be a little too narrow (it doesn't really extend over the seats at all) so I would recommend drinking or maybe sharing apps at the bar but eating at a table. I ordered a chicken quesadilla. I had meant the appetizer (I didn't even see that there was an entree portion and the bartender didn't ask me) to clarify so I didn't know this wasn't the appetizer until it came - well, I guessed when it came because of the sides, and I knew for sure when I saw the bill. I was in a go with it sort of mood so I left it go, but make sure you clarify what you want if that's what you order. Chips and salsa came out first. The salsa was a mild almost pico de gallo type but the ingredients tasted fresh. The chips were hot but a little greasy, I think this will be solved when they get busier because they'll be turning them aroudn faster in hotter oil. The quesadilla itself was somehow simutaneously buttery and light. The rice that came with it was full of flavor, but note, I'm guessing it has chicken stock in it so ask first if you're vegetarian or vegan. The guacamole, however, was terrible. Watery like a sauce and lacking in flavor. I suggest just skipping it all together. Overall I really enjoyed my first meal at Zarape Restaurant and I look forward to trying them again. I don't know if it's authentic, but it is good. We have quite a lot of these Mexican restaurants in the Charlotte area - heck, they're everywhere! - and this one stacks up to those quite well. Starting with thick cut salsa chips and a rather wet but tasty salsa, I looked over the menu and opted for the day's "Special Numero Uno" and was pleased. I was delivered a burrito well-stuffed with chicken and spinach, topped with a mild green chile sauce. The rice was nice and soft, but the beans were very wet. The five stars for this little joint is soley based on their margaritas and having corona light on draft. It's a small little neighborhood mexican joint with a bar and a good amount of tables scattered around the place. Street parking only. It was pretty much full and just my luck there opened a few seats at the bar area. Bartender was friendly enough, not to chatty but thats ok. Chips n salsa prompty arrived. Not bad, not awful. Does the trick when your sucking back drinks. Forget which margarita I ordered but the two I had were amazing. Made tthe switch over to Corona Light draft w LEMON and of course it was great.
