Spirit Halloween - The Melrose Park Toys R Us used to occupy this space. Man do I miss that giraffe.....

    Spirit Halloween

TRILOGY OF FEAR : INFEST…read more The cockroaches of seasonal retail deserve their own place in Yelp hell. { this is the first entry of a brief, three-part series on the most infamous of pop-up outlet stores. I've had countless interactions with Spirit stores over the better part of a decade and these are the sum of those experiences, both new & old, at brick-and-mortar locations as well as online } More than any other holiday during the year, Halloween is my jam. October's my favorite month of the year, and now that I've got a house in the 'burbs, I'm rearing to go full-bore with indoor props, lawn decor, you name it. Much to my wife's dismay, I prefer the macabre over the cute or cool, so I came to this Spirit store on 9/10/20 to browse for ideas. The corpse of the Melrose Park Toys R Us (RIP) was barely cold before Spirit swooped in and laid claim to the abandoned storefront like the sneering vultures they are. The shelves were mostly stocked, but as the days get closer to 31-Oct, the product selection will naturally dwindle, the store will undoubtedly become messier, the employees more tired and less helpful. I bought a Friday the 13th ceramic mug ($15), because who wouldn't want to drink out of Jason Voorhees' severed head? It was one of the only things that appeared to be of decent build quality. Nearly everything else is rubbish. Over the years, I've bought fog machines that barely worked or ceased to function after one use, decorations that rip or crumble at the drop of a hat, and, recently, an LED candelabra where 2 of the 5 candles were defective. The animatronics are sloppily designed cheap Chinese knock-offs with horrendously low quality audio FX. Some of the motions and sounds they make are laughable. At checkout, the first words out of the cashier's mouth were "give us an email address for a 20% coupon". Not "hello" or "did you find everything alright", but a request for contact info (I declined, knowing that they will spam the living beejezus out of your inbox). She looked young, so I'll chalk that up to inexperience and a lack of training. Still, kinda rude. What's stranger, I had to ASK for a bag. She gave me a receipt, blinked, and.....nothing. Was it assumed I'd leave the store carrying a ceramic mug in my bare hand? Uh, nooooo. Obviously I need a bag for my F-R-A-G-I-L-E object, duh! C'mon. That's just common sense. * TL;DR * Spirit Halloween is a plague on the midwest, the corporeal form of Wish.com. Like the worst kinds of vermin, they rapidly infest an area, linger for 6-8 weeks, and vanish without a trace until the following September. Stomp on one? 10 more spring up from the ground. I'm getting the chills just THINKING about all the other Spirit stores beginning to emerge from their time-delay cocoons. Check out Home Depot, Menards, and Amazon for better deals and higher quality products (Home Accents is a solid brand). Make an educated shopping decision this fall: avoid Spirit like your soul depends on it.

My phone call today with Lee could have been much more professional. I called to gain clarity about two orders, both about missing items from a previous order and also to make sure that my other order was ready to be picked up and didn't accidentally get shipped. Lee's responses were sarcastic and unhelpful, causing me to not only be confused but frustrated. Before I drive an hour to pick up my orders, I wanted absolute certainty that they were available to be picked up being that this was not true last Friday. These are comments that Lee made: "didn't you receive an email?, Doesn't it say that the order is ready?, why wouldn't you have received your order?, are you sure you even placed your order?" The answers to these questions are not as black-and-white as Lee may think. And the most helpful and easy thing to do is to simply look up the orders and verify rather than make sarcastic comments to me. It should be obvious that I need help and that things are not clear for me, which is the reason why I called. After I was forwarded to Tony, who was able to clarify everything, I received another phone call from Lee following up with me to make sure I was fully helped. I did appreciate that. I'm well aware that we all have our off days, or are not on our A-game for every call.

I rarely ever review things but my experience was so irritating I have to leave a review. Ordered…read morean adult Ghostbusters costume online for pickup the next day. I arrive for pick up and call. They tell me they cancelled my order and didn't have ny size. It was a one size fits all, but okay. Then they tell me they are sold out when I ask about other options. Okay, fair enough its the day before Halloween. The next morning I check online it shows they still have 2. Before ordering I call to ask, explaining That I had tried to purchase a costume yesterday but when I came for pick up I was told they were sold out. He took a moment to look and said they had one left, nd I asked if you they could hold it. He said there were no holds during Halloween and I could order it on line. I explained when I tried that they put my order back. He said I could order on on line but it would mess up their inventory. At this point its ridiculous, But because I'm desperate to take pictures with my one year old during a year when we haven't been able to do anything I decide to just try to run in, thankfully his grandmother could watch him. I arrive and inquire about the costume and its at the register, great! But wait! This costume is $10 more than the one on line because its for a woman ( totally not the employees fault but eff you corporate) I get to the car and pull it out to take a look, and it's a plus size costume, it should be medium. WTF. So I spend $10 more for costume that won't fit me, and that I can't return, after having to go to the store twice. Im going to wash and dry hoping it shrinks but Jesus Christ Halloween City thanks for making this whole experience suck. Fix your effing inventory, stop charging more for womans costumes, and if your manager fucks up have them use some common sense to make it right. 0 stars if I could. The girl who checked me out was very nice. The guy who I spoke on the phone with wouldn't acknowledge me.
