However, a doctor's bedside manner is not the sum of his or her expertise; While Dr. Aria can be direct and clinical in her approach, she is still conscientious and warm as the situation dictates. I have had over two years of an abdominal rash that was mis-diagnosed and even dismissed by dermatologists and other doctors. Dr. Aria recognized it as "inverse psoriasis," which looks different than plaque psoriasis. This was such a relief to me, because Dr. Aria finally was able to diagnose and provide treatment. She answered questions that I had, and left me with her team to address prescription and home care needs. I am quite satisfied with Dr. Aria, and intend to continue seeing her.

Since I have not been back in about a year, it is certainly possible that some things have changed. Over the years, though, there were several recurring frustrations. Getting an appointment could take months, and it became increasingly difficult to get the kind of full-body skin check I need. I have hundreds of moles, so I rely on my dermatologist to do a thorough exam because I simply cannot track changes in all of them myself. Last time, she kept asking me well identify the moles you want me to look at rather than wanting to do the full body check. And I was told next time I come in they would only do a mole check on a limited number of moles. That's a deal killer. Dr. Aria also ran very late fairly regularly. It was rare that I did not wait at least 30 minutes past my appointment time, and sometimes closer to an hour. That became difficult when I had business meetings scheduled later in the day. I probably could have continued overlooking those issues, but my last visit was what finally pushed me to make a change. I asked about some spots on my stomach, and Dr. Aria told me they were "age spots," with a comment along the lines of, "Well, you're getting old.These are common after age 50." It was not so much the terminology as the delivery, which felt dismissive and insulting. When I later asked my new dermatologist about the same spots, she called them "wisdom spots." I actually laughed because it made me realize how easily the same information can be conveyed without making a patient feel diminished. There was not one dramatic incident that caused me to leave. It was the accumulation of long waits for appointments, long waits once I arrived, concerns about the thoroughness of skin checks, and finally an interaction that left me feeling uncomfortable. Waiting area is starting to empty out. I hope the doctor is worth the wait or we won't be returning. Update: The room we were led had a working AC. Doctor spent 5 minutes with us. So, the 2 hour wait wasn't due to spending time with the patients. The excellent thing, however, is that the doctor didn't try to sell us bunch of creams he had displayed in the waiting area. He went straight for the medications that were needed. He assured us that for the next 6-7 months, while seeing his assistant, the wait will be only 5 min.
