After getting up around Lancaster, PA - I was mixing up whether U.S. 30 East or U.S. 222 North took me to the Pennsylvania Turnpike/Interstate 76 East. I saw a sign for a "Visitor's Information Center." "Perfect," I thought. I pulled in. Waited my turn (two other folks in line in front of me) and the lady working the counter pulled out a couple of free maps, asked me where I was going, highlighted my route, discussed them with me, and made a couple of route recommendations. They have tons of brochures here on area attractions for folks to peruse and take with them. There are also restrooms, and coffee available. I ended up backtracking a couple of miles west on U.S. 30 and took U.S. 222 North to the PA Turnpike. Great service - and friendly!

We just got married in NJ 3 days after hurricane Sandy hit the east coast and were worried our honeymoon venue may have also been out of power as our reception venue was. When I got Pam on the phone, she said she had been thinking about ME during the storm and hoped everything was fine. If it wasn't clear by my opening paragraph, my husband and I spent our honeymoon at this B&B, for a more relaxing experience than most honeymoon-goers. We had such a great time! We stayed in the Cottage Cabin and my goodness, it was amazing. There was a fireplace, a heated bathroom floor, a shower with several different shower heads for that spa effect, heated whirlpool tub, and a mini bar. Everything was clean, smelled fresh, and the bed was beyond comfortable. Pam was always bringing us fresh cookies and asking if we would want breakfast served in our room or with them. We alternated days because why not! Pam and Dallas are such great people to talk to. It was a pleasure getting to know them. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful, with a wide variety of tastes on one plate, never duplicating during the week we stayed. They also offered a good amount of information on things to do during our stay. Quincy, their dog, was a real trip! I wanted to take him home (and I am not very fond of dogs). My husband and I truly felt like royalty while we were staying with Pam and Dallas. On our first night, we wanted to make a bag of microwave popcorn but felt weird asking to use their microwave so late at night, but Dallas hopped right up and popped it for us, even gave us a bowl - no second thought! And my husband wanted to purchase fresh Amish butter... but Pam beat him to it and gave us a good hunk of the batch she bought as a gift. Not to mention a few other gifts we received from them to bless our new marriage. We will absolutely be going back and look forward to it. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. They really do know and love what they're doing over there. There is so much to do in the area and even more down towards Lancaster that we needed more than a week to hit all the places. Definitely check out Bubes Brewery. We had dinner one night in the Catacombs. The lighting down there is very dim but the menu definitely a bit fancier and worth a visit. I came back to purchase one of the house brews in a growler. We went on the Lancaster ghost tour which was fun, took a buddy ride and had lunch at Plain and Fancy, saw the production of Jonah at Sight and Sound, ate at Shady Maple Smorgasbord (always a favorite), and took note of every other place we'd have to go to. We had a fantastic time and had recommended this place to a friend of mine who stayed in the Cottage around Christmas last year and had an awesome experience.

You start out in a large theater and watch a heartwarming movie about the founders. About 6 minutes. My guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Since I went as a single person, they put me with a medium sized group. No problem. They give you 2 small bags of chips for free plus a handful of chips that the guide walks right up to the machine and takes a tray full of chips and gives them to you in a small fry type box. Each stop on the tour has video monitors that the guide will explain as well. They go through the pretzel section, corn chips, cheese puffs, popcorn and chips. You see each station and its seasoning and packing. At the end back in the gift shop they sell products marked "oops". Meaning they could be under filled, over filled, under seasoned or over seasoned. They are discounted 50 percent off. The sweatshirts and hoodies I felt were overpriced at $50. I may have bought one for $20 though. Lots of parking. Had a great time.

But, I was glad to see that Herr's is one that's still around. I was coming from Gettysburg, so I signed up for the last tour of the day. (I was the ONLY one who had!) But, I got there several hours early, and they were really nice about switching my reservation to one that was only a half hour away. The tour guide (I forgot his name, but it starts with a Y) seemed new, but he was doing a really good job. He walked backward the entire time so that he could engage with us as we walked around. He explained everything we were seeing and he answered all the questions he was asked. Not only was it fun watching the chips and pretzels being made, the aroma of the whole area was wonderful. If you are in the immediate area (under 30 mins drive) then go for it but if you are further away I would not recommend traveling more than 20-30 mins for this experience. The train ride was cool but when you get to the end for the 20 min break there really isn't anything to do. They have one train station house that you can walk into but there's nothing fancy in the house. The souvenir shop was closed so that was useless during my excursion. The leaves were not orange so there wasn't a "fall experience" which isn't the fault of the train service. Overall the experience is cool but nothing grand and certainly not something you should go out of your way for. Maybe the other activities this business offers is better (i.e. pumpkin express ride) but I won't be back to find out.
