There were loads of flavours to choose from and a variety of cones and toppings if you so wish. The lady behind the counter wasn't the friendliest of ice cream scoopers, but I'm not sure how much more friendly should could have been seeing as how she's there alone all day waiting on people to buy ice cream. She surely seemed in a hurry to get us taken care of and on our way, which wasn't a bad thing. I now know where to go when I'm in the city centre if I'm looking for an ice cream treat that isn't just a frozen lolly out of the local shops.

There are about 18 flavours you can choose from including classics like mint chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate. If you want something different they have Irn Bru, kinder, bounty, Scottish tablet, crunchy and a couple more delicious flavours. I tried the bounty and the Irn Bru flavours and both were lovely! Nice change from a McDonalds McFlurry when you are looking for a sweet treat in the mall.

It is conveniently located at the end of the walk through Electric Glen so there was constantly people coming in to see about whether they could get a table. We hadn't tried The Boathouse, despite it being in our local park. When we arrived last night I was impressed by the decor - they've definitely gone for a boating theme but it's done in a very classy, relaxed way rather than being naff and tacky. We had a comfortable table for 4 by the window looking over the pond which would be an excellent spot to dine in summer. I was initially a little disappointed by the menu as it all seemed like standard café grub and the prices gave me the impression it might not be a great standard. There's sandwiches, baked potatoes, burgers, wraps plus a hot dishes section with fish & chips, macaroni cheese, beef chilli etc. And they have a separate breakfast meal (my favourite meal of the day!) I then read the cute little info box on the menu that says "real people make real food from real ingredients" and all outsourced food is marked on the menu so you know what is/isn't made on site. Understably things like ice cream, pasta plus some cakes/bread are bought in but it was pleasing to see the rest is made on site. I opted for the mac cheese - after doubling checking with the waitress what she thought of it. I think the price was around £5.50 so I was a bit worried it would be tiny or substard. When it arrived it was in a decent sized ramekin with garlic bread and side salad. It was incredibly cheesy and creamy and I'm pleased to report it was one of the best macaroni cheese dishes I've tried to date. Big call I know, as I eat a lot of macaroni cheese! My only comment about it was that the noodles were really small (perhaps maccheroncelli pasta which I had to google to check the name of!). But that wasn't anything to complain about, just something to note! The extra side of chips I ordered were also really good - nothing to rave about, but decent chips all the same. Service was exceptional - even without having to take into account how busy The Boathouse must be while Electric Glen was on. The place didn't feel busy, the staff didn't seem rushed and they were all calm and helpful. The waitress even came back to ask what I thought of the macaroni cheese after I'd finished it which I thought was nice of her. The bill for a meal for four people (mains only, a soft drink each) came to a very reasonable £40. If you want to have some drinks, they are BYOB with no charge for corkage. They also have free wifi. Seriously - this place is awesome. For proper, decent food right on our doorstep, I'm totally kicking myself for not visiting this absolute gem sooner and can't wait to go again.

I mean, later, when you've already bought a cone you can worry about consistency and about how well it even pulls those flavours off, but surely if they don't have the flavour you want you'll just go elsewhere. Crolla has a great range of flavours. As well as all the old classic flavours it has a few more exciting options as well as a small number of sorbets - perfect if you want something just a little more refreshing. Fortunately, they do manage to get the flavours right (at least all the ones I've tasted) and the consistency of the ice cream is always creamy perfection. They do so-called "real food" too. I recommend their student lunch deal which is a soup and half sandwich for a very reasonable price. The pizza cones look great too but I don't think I'd have any idea how to actually eat one. I'll try eventually and get back to you on that. Their coffee is pretty good too but really, you're here for the ice cream and the ice cream is good. Treat yourself to an extra scoop.

We had to clean everything up before sitting at one of the tables outside, which really did make my impression of the place quite bad. When you go in, there are tables and benches that are the same; not cleaned and not cleared from cups and napkins. Is this place dirty or something? :/ I have no complaints about the staff member who served us though! He was a friendly lad! He laughed at me when I asked if the toppings and sauce for my gelato were free, and then proceeded to generously coat my gelato with thousands of sprinkles and chocolate sauce. I laughed in delight as I paid 3pounds for such a wonderful portion of ice cream. I also really liked the ice cream itself! Best way to describe - SINFUL. Guilt with every bite, but it's so worth it hohohohoho! The only comment is, please maintain the cleanliness of the premises! I got one scoop of gelato and decided on a Scottish tablet flavour. It was my first time trying the tablet, and let me tell you, it was definitely worth it. The subtle vanilla complemented the bits of tablet perfectly. It was amazing! Overall, I highly recommend trying the other flavours too. They have a lot of options to choose from. The employee was helpful in deciding what flavour to choose if you're undecided.
