Realistically this felt more like a 3.5 star experience for me, but rounding up because there was still a lot to like. Solid spot when you're craving hand rolls and want something casual, clean, and convenient. The biggest difference for me was the seaweed. It's not the typical hand roll nori I'm used to -- it reminded me more of the salted seasoned seaweed snacks you'd buy at Costco or the grocery store. Not bad, just different from what I usually prefer. I still personally prefer spots like KazuNori and ROL Hand Roll Bar for hand rolls. Service was very good and definitely a highlight. Selection of fish was good and we opted for the spicy ones which was not spicy at all. I didn't get as many fresh fish as I had hoped. Service similar to other hand roll places and served as you go but it was quite slow for lunch on a Saturday since there was only one person serving so it was noticeably longer between rolls. We added our name on the yelp waitlist and by the time we got there about 30 minutes later, we were seated promptly. They have sets or you can do à la carte. We did a set that had tuna, salmon, and substituted the shrimp tempura for yellowtail. We also made it spicy. I think the salmon was my least favorite. Delicious hand rolls that are worth the wait! Before driving over, I joined the Yelp waitlist, which estimated a 45 to 60 minute wait at 7pm on a Friday. Parking was easy at the Culver Steps underground parking garage, and once you walk or take the elevator up, the restaurant is just around the corner. They also validate if you park there! Inside, the space is modern with all bar seating. It's definitely a date spot with mostly couples. The only downside is that the chairs are placed close together, so you might feel like you're part of the neighboring conversation. But with how long the wait gets, I'm not sure they could remove any seating. The waitstaff was also very nice and attentive, checking in periodically and making sure I had everything I needed. I ordered the spicy four hand roll set, which came with Korean seaweed. It was a great choice because it added an extra kick and the perfect crunch. The set included tuna, albacore, salmon, and shrimp tempura. I appreciated that the fish wasn't overly minced, so you could really taste the fresh texture. The shrimp tempura was nicely crispy, and the added cucumber gave it an extra refreshing crunch. I frequent the classic hand roll spots such as kazu-nori, sugar fish, etc and I do say Yumoni stands out with their appetizers. I absolutely adore their rock shrimp tempura. It comes so crunchy and hot. Absolutely addicting. 10/10 must order everytime I go. The rolls themselves are quite nice too. You can choose your seaweed: regular, soy papers, or spicy. I find this quite unique and I enjoy choosing different seaweeds. While I do think it's on the pricier side I find they have more options for hand-rolls such as tempura and unagi. Both which are delectable. It's the same concept as kazunori where you are sat around the kitchen and can see your handrolls being made right in front of you. A great addition to the Culver Steps, especially since that's not great sushi (IMO) in downtown Culver. I love that inside, you can sit at the counter and get fresh hand rolls made to order right in front of you. Everything tastes high quality, from the fish to the tempura that comes out still piping hot from the fryer. Then on the outside patio, they have an assortment of cut rolls, which are also delicious. The service is always top notch and love the decor inside too. KazuNori still reigns supreme for me in the handroll category but Yunomi is a not-too-distant second! We sat outside on their patio but just know the patio seating only allows cut rolls and nigiri--no hand rolls. I'm sure there's a reason for this. I've been going to Yunomi for years and have usually had a great time. Unfortunately, my last visit was awful, I have a life-threatening allergy to shellfish and ordered my usual six roll combo. I asked to exchange the shrimp and crab for another fish of any kind due to my allergy. The waitress informed me that I would have to pay extra for substitutions at $1.50 per roll. I explained it's not a preference, but an allergy, and they can literally give me a cheaper fish, I just can't have shrimp and crab. She said it didn't matter and it was a new policy and I needed to pay or don't order the combo. It was really rude, and also really dumb. Policies like this will quickly get customers to never show up again. Also, customer service and at least being kind to people should be a baseline when you have a dumb policy for food that could kill someone. read more

Just got back from eating here!! My friend and I had been out and about throughout the day and decided to try a new spot for a light snack. Enter Yunomi Handroll. The restaurant is located in the back of the Culver Steps so I missed it at first looking for the sign. We ended up parking in the public parking lot and they'll give you an hour free with validation (yay!) There were maybe 5-7 other customers when we arrived around 3:30pm but the bar is long so there was plenty of seating. The restaurant itself looked very clean chic and they have QR codes for menus but you can also ask for a hard copy if you want. I ordered the 4 handroll set (tuna, albacore, salmon, and shrimp tempura) along with another salmon and soft shell crab handroll. You have the option of regular with nori or spicy with korean seaweed (soy paper is also an option). I opted for spicy for my set and non-spicy for my extra add-ons. Just a side note, when getting the set, you cannot mix and match the spice--it's all or nothing! The "spicy" wasn't spicy at all but still very delicious. I was surprised at how well korean seaweed goes with sushi and I could distinctly taste the difference between the two seaweed options. I asked for light rice on all my handrolls and they delivered. The fish all tasted fresh and my soft shell crab was freshly fried. While I'd like to thank our lovely sushi chef for making all our delicious handrolls, I'd like to give a special shout out to Destiny. She was so adorable and friendly and I really enjoyed her attentive service. Her energy definitely gave the entire eating experience and extra oomph. Good vibes all around! They have appetizers as well as a large selection of sake and beer. They have more variety than Kazunori but just as affordable and cute little take-out boxes with cut rolls like any other handroll centric spot. I'm glad I get to add this place to my 'must visit again and try everything' list. Sushi was fresh and ratio of rice to fish was excellent. I ordered salmon skin handroll and it was really good with crispy salmon skin and it was balanced with cucumbers, gobo, and kaiware. Also got Unagi handroll with good amount of eel and sauce. It had slightly sweet taste from eel sauce with tender and softness texture from eel. My favorite one out of all of them that I ordered. Shrimp tempura handroll was good with a crunch of tempura shrimp with creamy richness of avocado in it. Overall, all of the handrolls I ordered were delicious and satisfying to eat. Love Yunomi. This is probably the best crispy rice I've had in LA. All of the hand rolls were fresh and tasty, and they get the orders up quickly. If you're going on the weekend, I would recommend checking the Yelp waitlist and joining ahead of time. I join the waitlist before heading out and by the time I arrive, either my table is ready or I have a 5-minute wait. Didn't wait long for outside table but if you want a bar seat it most likely will always have a wait, found this place on yelp actually and wanted to give it a try after visiting the academy of film. Honestly was willing to pay $13 for a roll and was expecting at least decent portions or extremely good blue crab, but I didn't get either. The rolls were presented well but had tiny portions, and the blue crab quality didn't stand out to me at all. My friends ordered the spicy tuna roll and avacado cucumber roll and they said it was okay, but I still think it was nothing special overall. Honestly loved coming here on my lunch breaks and always enjoyed the service but unfortunately some waitress with blue hair was extremely rude to me. First of all please don't be touching your hair and brushing it in a place where they serve food. It gross. And if you're going to have a bad attitude at work try and not do gross stuff on top of it. The way she snapped at me when I asked for it to go container for my rolls was honestly rude and embarrassed me. I've never had leftover food when I got there so it was something I was unaware of so instead of being so rude, could've been really kind about it being like hey we don't do that. I'm not sure if you knew that but you know what if you don't want your food to go to waste. Will let it slide this one time but that's not something we commonly do. Or something of those lines. Being rude to somebody like that, and then having an attitude, the rest of the time I was there which made me so uncomfortable and that I left and I didn't finish my food. It was completely unacceptable. This was after I tipped over 22%. I am not a bad patron. I clean up after myself. I'm nice. I smile. This is only my 4th Yelp review might I add so to get me to this point the service must've been really bad. I won't be going back there if she's there. I'm sorry for doubting you, Yunomi. The first time I came to Yunomi, I wasn't the biggest fan - I got the handrolls and thought that it wasn't comparable to Kazunori (imo). I recently went back and had other items that weren't handrolls and it was delicious. We got a lot of the appetizers, the ceviche, albacore sashimi with crispy onions, spicy albacore on crispy rice, etc. and it was very tasty. I wish I ate more. I then ordered takeout and it comes in a cute box set, it was ~$30 and honestly, it was cute but I was still so hungry afterwards. I think it's much more worth to go in next time. The ambience is nice, I like that there's indoor bar seating and outdoor seating as well. read more
