I became suddenly ill around December 2012. Deathly ill. I went from being a vibrant active twenty…read moresomething to someone that could barely get out of bed, diagnosed heart problems from lyme disease and multiple sclerosis like symptoms. I started treatment with Joy about 2 months after I started treatment with another doctor for lyme disease in conjunction. After about a week of Dr. Joy's treatments, I noticed a difference. I thought it was just me but even my coworkers said "Hey, you have color in your face again." At first it was a combination of treatments that I attributed to my return of health. I now believe, that it was Dr. Joys treatments that primarily restored my health. She led me on the path and though it was a bit bumpy jumping off of herbals and antibiotics..her treatments worked. Sometimes overnight. I started having severe insomnia 1-2 hours a night for 2 weeks. I was overnighted a supplement that was supposed to reduce fatique and WHAM - 7-8 hours a night. I took it for about a month and that was all my body needed to 'reset' itself so to speak. As a scientist I was completely skeptical of alternative medicine and bio-energetics. I am 100% a converted believer. The testing matched my bloodwork without showing Dr. Joy my bloodwork (Hey, I am after all a scientist, I question a lot!). I have since sent a few other people to Dr. Joy who are also having extremely positive results. I have been off of all medicine for about a month now and still feel great. Better then I have in years. My experience as a scientist and a patient is that this medicine works and is strong. I 100% believe there is a science to it, we just have yet to figure out a means to quantify it... It may seem expensive since insurance does not yet recognize this powerful medicine but for me, 100% well worth it and I would recommend it to anyone.

Since starting my plan and making lifestyle changes, I've reduced my migraines by 90%. I have more energy and I feel so much better. I look forward to my visits with her. She genuinely cares and listens thoroughly - that's rare to find when most of the time I was used to being funneled in and out of doctors offices with little face to face time - the fact that she cares so much already helped me to feel positive about my future with the changes made. It's about getting to the root and it gives me peace of mind knowing that this is an approach that I can maintain and build upon.

One detail I like, compared to other acupuncturists, is that while you're resting with the needles in she covers you with one of those first-aid blankets that look like super-fine tinfoil, so you stay warm but the blanket is super super light and places no pressure at all on the needles. Also, she does this amazing thing at the end where she covers your entire back with a hot compress soaked in Chinese herbal tea. You might as well be at the spa. What more can I say? Great stuff!

I almost didn't write anything except I ran into another woman who also had a difficult experience with him, so it seems important to offer up my experience so that other women might have a fuller picture and another perspective before going to see him. Brian asked me to explain why I'd come to see him. As I began describing some of my concerns, right off the bat, he told me that all of the words I was using to describe my discomfort were wrong. I tried to reframe it but again hit a wall of criticism regarding my vocabulary. I have worked with massage therapists, physical therapists, acupuncturists, trainers etc and have never been so criticized about my attempts to describe my pain. Indeed, I was using the language I have learned from them and in anatomy training as a yoga teacher. I was so confused by his aggressive demeanor that I excused myself to the restroom. When I returned, I remarked that we must have gotten off on the wrong foot. Instead of having a restart, he told me that he had found my inquiry several days earlier about rescheduling our appointment very rude and he'd been very put off by it. (I had called to ask if he had other times available, and when he didn't, kept the original time.) I apologized, even though I thought it odd since schedules often change as things come up and we had in fact kept the original appointment. After several more exchanges, he asked me to take my shirt off so he could look at me. I had a yoga bra on and did so. He asked me to stand facing him and then finally said, "I'm sorry to insult you again, but I bet you do all that yoga belly breathing." When I described how I've been taught to breathe he apologized. He had me rotate around slowly. He told me I could put my shirt on. I asked what he had learned, "Well there are some things we could do." Already feeling vulnerable and having had my shirt off for a while, I'd have appreciated more specific information. I felt very uncomfortable. Again I described some of the reasons I'd been encouraged to look at rolfing and told him about the trainer who had recommended it. He dismissed the trainer and my experience with him, saying that he didn't know me enough to assess me, and seemed to dismiss the trainer altogether. He continued to contradict all of the vocabulary I was using. I am not a professional bodyworker so was simply doing my best -- I couldn't believe he could be so critical. After several similar exchanges, I said that it just didn't seem like a good fit. He said, "Well you're not particularly warm and fuzzy but I guess you hear that all the time." I have never been told that before and said so. I really was shocked. I prepared to leave and said, "Thank you for your time. It was nice to meet you," probably more of a nicety and a way of exiting. He said, "You don't have to say 'It was nice to meet you' - just say 'I met you.'" That's when I started crying, he was so aggressive. I really was shocked to find this behavior in a bodyworker, or frankly in anyone who works with people. It felt very misogynistic and I would not recommend him.

I started working with Dr. Dan 2 years ago due to several recommendations from neighbors and friends. I had wasted so much money, but as my symptoms worsened, I decided to give Turack Chiropractic a try for nutrition and functional medicine. WOW, what a difference. Dr. Dan prescribed testing that revealed the ROOT of my GI distress, finally! He was able to pinpoint the supplements that would kill the specific strains of yeast/bacteria in my body and actually determined that probiotics were bad for me because my good bacteria were too high. Other alternative medicine doctors threw probiotics at me, which made my system worse! I should also note that Dr. Dan is significantly cheaper than any other doctor I've been to and while he recommends supplements, he lets you choose what you want to take and if you purchase them there or on your own (absolutely no pressure). Natural supplementing takes more time, but, paired with eating well after 1 1/2 years, I feel AMAZING! My energy level is high, I'm digesting food, my body slimmed down as a result, I sleep through the night, and my BMs are regular for the most part now WITHOUT supplements...I couldn't be more grateful for Dr. Dan's help and can live my life instead of being in constant distress! It's allowed me to get back to my workouts and play sports and enjoy them from how great I feel! He also knows a TON about injuries and chiropractic care, easing a severely pinched nerve and finding the source of a strained AC shoulder joint (in my neck). He's the only doctor I see now for just about everything (even sinus infections and headaches)! I HIGHLY recommend Turack Chiropractic and Performance Health, you won't regret going!
