I saw Dr. Holmes for several months for basal cell carcinoma treatment on multiple parts of my body. During the majority of my visits, Dr. Holmes was incredibly scattered, never giving her full attention to me during our appointments. An example of this would be how, after she removed the skin cancer from me and I returned for my follow up, her assistant had to remind her to tell me that I didn't have cancer anymore as she was leaving the room for another patient. Additionally, she would, on multiple occasions, touch the wounds on my body without wearing gloves, which made me incredibly uncomfortable. Hi Dyson, I called this morning, provided my credit card data, and you were unable to complete the transaction for the bill below of USD 30. Without hesitation, you claimed my card is not working. The credit card works perfectly fine and has been used with another medical provider a few minutes ago. Having tried your online payment system, which does not work, and having called you to pay on the phone, which did not work either, I am left with asking you to send a paper bill by mail and I will mail back a check. I do not intend to be charged more than USD 30, given that I did try in good faith to honor your bill twice, without success, not due to my fault. I invite you in writing to avoid hanging up the phone while a client is talking to you, it really shows badly on the reputation of your medical practice. For the records, all these incidents come after your medical practice had tried to unduly bill us for a higher amount which you had no right to ask, since you had been paid by the insurance company at the rate you accepted with them. Firstly, the address is wrong on this listing. There are at 20th and S near Dupont circle. I've been going to this provider for over a year now. I understand that skincare can be a slow and incremental process but have an experienced very personal care. I feel like just a number in the appointment factory. The times that I have met with Dr Holmes she pulled up articles on PubMed for even just googled an image to explain what she wanted to address. It felt like she really didn't know her stuff. They also feel this way because she gave me an acne face wash to treat eczema of which I learned later is actually a very bad idea because they are very different problems and when I used the face wash it created an even more painful and adverse reaction. Follow up care is non-existent. Once she leaves the room you have no idea if you should be setting up another appointment or if she wants you to use a certain prescription for it period of time and then follow up again. You feel like you've just been picked up and then dropped. One time I had a prescription sent to my pharmacy and then the pharmacy needed to ask for authorization and that never happened. I went in for an appointment today after waiting for about a month. I've had a recurring issue that I wanted checked out by a derm. This was my first time going to a dermatologist, and I was excited that a black woman derm would see me. I come in early, and the office is closed for lunch between 12-1 pm. This isn't advertised anywhere so I was unware of the office closing. The front desk receptionist made me leave and return at my appointment time. In other offices, a person is usually left to wait inside the waiting room if they come too early. But I digress. I come back at my appointment time and Dr. Holmes sees me. Similar to the other reviews here, she barely looked at me. Prescribed me a shampoo, solution, and cream - didn't even bother telling me how and when to use them, and sent me on my way after less than 5 minutes. As a new client, she didn't even go over my skincare routine, what my problem areas were, or even what services her clinic could provide. Needless to say, I'm incredibly disappointed and will not be returning. And now, based on the reviews of how crazy people are saying this place's billing office is, I'll be keeping an eye out for whether or not they overcharge me for this 5-minute consultation. read more

I PCP gave two dermatologist referrals. One was highly rated and solidly booked for months. Dr. Holmes had mixed reviews and availability. I am so glad that I rolled the dice! First a few concessions to those who pointed out more "grows" than "glows." You may not get someone to pick up the phone within a fee rings or even a couple of minutes. Not uncommon among small practices. My referral and text alerts give an incorrect physical address. There is no 1737 20th Street. The entrance and address are around the corner in a condo on S Street. The website makes all of this clear if your not a last minute, running late patient like me. A custodian let me in, explaining that the intercom call box wasn't working. If you're expecting a traditional doctors office's reception area, you may be disappointed or at least disoriented in what feels Zen(?): more like a spa. One last spoiler. The office moved a few months ago, and office moves are stressful and inevitably glitchy. So the transition could have affected staff and patients? I found the staff nothing less than courteous, even indulgent: both over the phone and in-person. There wasn't the annoying clipboard full of forms. An assistant took my history verbally. My insurance and co-pay were processed efficiently. There was no long wait or shuffle among exam rooms, exit waiting area, etc. Then there was Dr. Holmes: personable, attentive, and responsive to questions and concerns. She addressed my concern, possible skin cancer, and diagnosed and treated other skin issues she found. And she offered advice and literature I hadn't anticipated. Stay away, I would give 0 stars if possible. By far the worst doctor I have ever seen, terrible bedside manner. Dr. Holmes does not take time to listen, rushes the appointment, didn't listen to concerns, and didn't take notes so every time I went back it was completely new to her. When trying to explain my situation, I have never been listened to, and then she questioned what I was doing -- even though I was following the instructions on the medication she prescribed. Unfortunately, I have to add to the "next!" Reviews. I really wanted to like Dr. Holmes. I'm a woman of color, and darker tones tend to need those who either specialize in a range of complexions or genetic make ups or are a person of color themselves. So I was really rooting for this visit. After all, a dermatologist at Sibley (one of my fave hospitals) told me about another dermatological issue I had that "you're black so it's probably a keloid or something". It was not. After that I knew I needed another dermatologist. That's where my hope in Dr. Holmes came through. Yes, she is nice? She just barely looks at you, and seems as though her mind is already on the next patient, maybe personal things, I don't know. Either way. Honestly one of the worst experiences at a specialist I have ever had. My appointment with Dr. Holmes was my first time ever seeing a dermatologist, so I was excited about the opportunity to get information and resources for my rosacea. However, Dr. Holmes did not provide any actual care. I have gotten better information out of walk-in clinics! She rushed me out of her office; the entire visit was an entire 3 minutes long. I didn't even get my jacket off before she was pushing me out her office to take the next patient. She honestly didn't even take the time to look at my face! How are you going to prescribe a proper treatment plan without first examining your patients condition? She literally took me into her office, said "oh you have rosacea? Here is a prescription for an oral pill. Next!" There was no opportunity for me to ask questions, or be given resources on the best daily facial routine to combat my condition. I would love to meet with Dr. Holmes to be treated by her, by I can't get pass the horrible customer service from her female receptionist. I called to schedule a new patient appointment and I am hung up on initially. I call back and I am placed on hold in the middle of the receptionist taking my information and was on hold for 22 MINUTES before I hung up. This is beyond ridiculous. I value working with a black doctor, especially when it comes to understanding matters of black skin, but if this doctor does not manage higher expectations of the front staff I'm sure she will loose many more patients than just me. read more

Avoid. There are far better dermatologists. I visited this dermatologist to have a skin tag removed. All my research indicated this is a very simple and quick procedure. During the first visit, she injected the skin tag and told me it would fall off in one week. A week later the skin tag was still there. I returned for a second visit to remove the tag and she asked whether I applied Vaseline to the tag. During the first visit, she explained Vaseline should be applied but I thought she meant AFTER the tag had fallen off. The instructions were unclear during the first visit because she was rushed and the office is like an assembly line. She did not see me until one hour after my scheduled appointment. During the second visit to remove the tag, she massaged it vigorously until the tag finally fell off. The tag left an unsightly scar but she did warn me that removing it could leave a scar. I was told by the receptionist during the second visit I would not be charged but weeks later I received a bill for the second visit. I also had to wait an hour after my appointment during the second visit before the doctor finally saw me. Note, during the second visit the doctor invited a medical student or apprentice into the office so she could observe the procedure without asking my permission or providing any advance notice. This individual would approach me up close to stare at my skin tag which I thought was extremely unprofessional. Patients do not want private or uncomfortable medical matters discussed with or inspected by others without their permission or advance notice. I felt like a specimen or circus attraction. The lack of privacy, respect and consideration for me as a patient was a complete turn off and I won't be back. I may be wrong but I suspect that if the skin tag was removed properly during the first visit, it would not have left such an unsightly mark. She recommended a $60 cream to fade the scar but it doesn't work at all. I will have to find another dermatologist who can treat the scar. read more

Give the simplest courtesy to clients requesting a refill on medicine needed for severe dermal issues? 2. Confront staff members discussing patients negatively, and openly during visits. 3. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Holmes. During these very difficult times, I felt very safe from the moment that I walked into the office. The receptionist was very nice. She offered PPE and she was very careful. Dr. Holmes greeted me when she saw me standing in the waiting room on her way to see her next patient. While I was in the examination room, the staff checked on me several times. Dr. Holmes was very patient when she numbed me to remove my mole on my face and her aftercare instructions were on point. I have been seeing Dr. Holmes for about a year now, I am always able to get an appointment, and Dr. Holmes' bedside manner is unbelievable. I had to get a biopsy done, and Dr. Holmes noticed me wringing my hands together out of anxiety. She went and got me a stress ball to hold into as she carried out the procedure. She walked me through step by step what was happening, how long it would take, and the pain level associated. This level of kindness by ANY doctor is rare, so I am very thankful for her. read more

Dr. Holmes is very nice and well trained in diagnosing skin conditions and conventional "medicine." However, her billing department is vicious. Even if you do a payment plan and pay as agreed they will ruin your credit by sending you to collections over $30! Additionally, eczema is an immune disease which must be healed through an organic diet and total detoxification. It can be caused by stress, or more often, environmental factors such as allergies. The topical anti-inflammatory creams (with a price tag of $750 copay for 30 day supply for a tube of ointment) are immune suppressors, not a cure. And if you stay on them for 10 years or more your risk of cancer goes up by 1000%. But why should that be a problem when you can make the doctor and pharmaceutical companies $132,000 in this toxic poison, right? If you want to be cured of your skin disease, then do your own research, find a homeopath, find the cause, and work with an allergist to cure your body from the inside out. If you want to be bankrupted by endless doctor appointments and ludicrously expensive medication, and then be submitted to collections for your $30 or less balance, by all means make an appointment. P.S. I was treated this way by this practice WITH excellent health insurance. I pity those paying out of pocket. read more

Total mixed bag here. Dr. Holmes is great, really friendly and seems to care a lot about her patients. Office staff seems friendly enough too. Main downside is their office policy of making you come in to get test results even if everything is fine seems like a way to wring an office visit payment from you and your insurance company. I'm pretty sure this place is running an insurance scam at its patient's expense. I booked an appointment to see the DOCTOR, because I had several medical questions for her. The day of my appointment a Physician's Assistant came into the room and said the doctor wasnt available and that she would see me instead. Given that she wasnt a dermatologist, I only had her look at one minor concern -for would later find out she misdiagnosed- and left knowing I'd let someone else deal with the rest of my ailments. Over a month later I get a bill from the office for $119 bucks. I call them repeatedly to check what it was for and no one ever picked up or returned my message. No one at their bill collecting number could help either. I finally called my insurance directly to figure out the charge. As it turns out, Dr. Holmes' office billed my insurance 600 bucks for a "doctor's visit" and a variety of other procedures I didn't have. Then billed me to remainder of what my insurance wouldn't cover. 119 bucks to get some over the counter topical cream and a misdiagnosis seems high. But to know that they also charged my insurance $600 with false claims is insurance fraud. Especially since I think they purposefully didn't call me back to answer my questions about the charges. I'm very upset, will not go back, and think other's should be very careful about billings from this office. read more

Just called the office to make an appointment. Receptionist was argumentative and rude. How is she still working there?

Let's see. I went last year to get a cancer screening. I was told I was seeing the doctor and they charged me for a doctors visit yet they sent in a medical student instead. I wasn't given a reason but when I began to question why I was billed for a doctor that I didn't see I was immediately thrown into the most assanine situation I've ever gone through. I told them they put incorrect information on my medical file and it needed to be removed. Example: They asked if I go tanning. I said absolutely not. I'm fair skinned. I wear sun screen year round. They wrote down "visits tanning booth 5 times a week. Was given consultation on cancer from tanning" This will now permanently place me on a potential list for denial of coverage if laws pass that are currently up for review. THEN I asked for a copy of my medical files. They told me I had to PAY for them and come get them in person. This is against the law. So called them. About 50 times. Because I don't play games with criminals. They called the police on me. The police asked what was going on and when I told him, he marched back into their office and said he wasn't leaving until they sent me the files. They were instructed to stop contacting me and I agreed to do the same. Cue to 6-8 months later. I've asked them to remove me from their email list over a dozen times. I clearly will NEVER give them my business again. Here's an email I got back after being sent the same email 4 times in one day (and responding to all 4 to GET ME OFF THEIR STUPID LIST!!!) We chatted briefly afterwards about my skin care regimen, what I should add, and what to look out for in terms of abnormalities on my skin. This is one of those places that I wish I could give ZERO stars. Dr. Holmes might be the worst doctor I've ever seen. I waited for nearly an hour for the doctor to spend less than 2 MINUTES with me. I went for an annual skin check...which I had never had before. When I was brought into the office, I was told to undress and given a gown. Dr. Holmes walked in, asked me why I was there and I told her. She asked if I had ever had a severe sunburn or was concerned about any moles or anything. I said no, and she said, "Then why are you here?" UMM because you're SUPPOSED to get an annual skin check. She then told me to lie down, RIPPED the robe off of me, looked me up and down and said, "Looks good" and made a move toward the door. I stopped her to say that I had a question about something else and she said, "You'll have to make another appointment for that." She then opened the door, while I was still completely naked and walked out, leaving it WIDE OPEN as one of her male colleagues was standing outside of the door. I was absolutely horrified. To add insult to injury, this was over two months ago, and I still can't get them stop sending me special deals for botox and laser hair removal because they have no unsubscribe feature on their emails. read more

I showed up 30 minutes early to fill out paperwork (which you'll totally need all that time --- though they won't tell you that on the phone) only to soon realize that she books multiple appointments at the same time - 3 people showed up for the same appointment slot! When it was finally my turn, Dr. Holmes spent all of 3 minutes with me (and this is SERIOUSLY not an exaggeration). She took one quick look at my scalp, handed me a sample, and said "goodbye" after every question I asked her. When I got home to use the sample she gave me, I soon realized that she did not give me any of the drug information (and it didn't come with the sample) nor did she explain how to use it, how often, etc. This woman is making bank by double- and triple-booking appointments, and then rushing through everything. Maybe it's a great method if you just want to pop in and out for some botox, but this is not the place to go if you need non-cosmetic medical attention. Beyond that, if you value your privacy, don't bother going here. The exam room walls are paper thin and I literally heard everything being said in the rooms around me. It's a shame. I'm new to DC and searching for a good facial spot. I used a Living Social voucher for a chemical peel here. The aesthetician explained to me that I would be getting a zero downtime glycolic peel with very little peeling. So, day two after the peel, I'm still confused as to why I walked out of the place with 2nd degree burns and blisters around my mouth. Now let me paint you a picture... First, the interior of this office is dingy. If they want clientele that pays $2000 to $3000+ for monthly cosmetic maintenance procedures not covered by health insurance or Medicaid, they need to spruce it up a bit. I mean, at least offer me a cup of water (no cucumber or orange slices necessary). Definitely not the type of upscale derm, plastic surgery, or cosmetic spas that I'm used to visiting for chemical peels and facials. And now for the main event: I've been getting chemical peels for about ten years now. I've received Vitamin C, Glycolic, Salicylic, red carpet, pcas, and microderm plus chemical peels. And NEVER in those ten years has the aesthetician or nurse left me alone in a treatment room for fifteen minutes with chemicals eating up my skin. Usually, while the peel is "working" the aesthetician sits in a chair next to me and fills out paperwork. They check in multiple times and ask for my pain level on a scale of 1 to 10. I even get a fan to cool the burning. Not at this place. The aesthetician LEFT the room and did not return to check up on me. After 5 minutes, the skin around my chin, nose, and mouth was burning at a level 9. After 10 minutes, it was a level 10. Tears were falling out of my eyes at this point. When she finally returned, I told her that the area around my mouth was on fire. She casually replied, "oh yes, you are red and frosting around your mouth." Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you know those white layers that form on your skin right after you get burned, but before it starts to blister. That's what was going on with my face. Day two and some of the blisters have busted. I walk around downtown DC looking like I had a herpes breakout with splotches of blistered/raw,red skin,and burnt black skin all around my mouth. I feel embarrassed and humiliated. Needless to say, I will never visit this place again. read more

I came here on recommendation from my doctor. This practice is definitely more geared toward cosmetic procedures which would lead you to think the office and waiting area would be way nicer and the personnel would be very friendly. On both my visits, the doctor (on one visit) and nurse (on the other) spent a very brief amount of time actually seeming me. They didn't look to diagnose the problem and seemed more focused on getting me out as soon as possible. On my follow up visit, the nurse remarked at the progress but did not seem to know what exactly she was looking for. Needless to say, I will go elsewhere if I need a dermatologist again. 3.5 stars I've been to Dr. Holmes' office a bunch of times and overall she is very helpful. You can tell she has a large load of patients, but it has never been difficult for her to fit me in for an appointment. I like her better than some of the other downtown dermatologists who are just interested in pushing you toward laser treatments and other expensive things. She has "special services" like microdermabrasion, etc., but still handles the regular skin problems. I would definitely recommend her, but it does take awhile for her to remember you, so you might not be able to immediately develop a rapport with her. In addition, the reception staff is pretty good, especially considering how terrible receptionists usually are in doctors offices. They aren't rude and won't hang up on you. read more

This is now the second doctor's office I've been to in the DC office in the last few days, and again, the reception was cold. They weren't particularly unfriendly but I just was not impressed by the welcome and dim lighting of the waiting area. Dr. Holmes was friendly and smiley. I wanted to get some moles checked out and she did a full body scan, albeit a quick one, and assured me that they were benign and to have them removed would mean having a bunch of scars. No thanks. I did get sold on some under eye night cream. I probably should have passed as it was $75 for 0.5 oz, but I thought I would give it a try. She probably saw at least 5 patients while I was there...about 45 minutes so if you're looking for more time with a dermatologist, I don't know that you'd get that with her. Oh, as for privacy, expect little. The walls are paper thing. I heard the conversation between the doctor and another patient, and the waiting room, staff, and the exam rooms are kind of in an open space, within earshot of one another. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Holmes for a few months now. I was looking for a dermatologist who is knowledgeable about female hair loss, which isn't easy to find. Dr. Holmes performed a scalp biopsy and did an excellent job. She then prescribed me medicine that has completely stopped my hair loss. 3 months later, I'm starting to see regrowth! I'm so grateful for her treatment and for her understanding with this difficult condition. Washington D.C. ladies looking for hair loss treatment I highly recommend you see Dr. Holmes! Visiting this office was a complete waste of time off work and a $2.50 metro ride. I made an appointment thinking I was going to see an actual dermatologist, but instead spent all of 3 minutes talking to the PA Suzanne who was completely uninterested in anything I had to say. Seriously, it took me longer to fill out the paper work than my diagnosis & treatment (if that is what you want to call it). After a 2 second evaluation, Suzanne scribbled a prescription & said "Is there anything else", like she wanted me out of the office. I can't stand to be dismissed by someone who is being paid to pay attention. I was covered in visible hives & whelps and she didn't even TRY to help. Then I again, Im not surprised because the reception desk was less than receptive. I don't know what Dr. Holmes is like but judging by the website & the service I received, the staff at this office is primarily concerned with cosmetic dermatology, not legitimate skin ailments. If you need something other than Botox or Juverderm, go someplace else. FYI - I highly recommend reading the filtered reviews. From my experience, I doubt they are far from the truth. read more

Each and every time that I went in there (3 times), I saw the Physician's Assistant. I'm paying the doctor my copay, so I expect to see the doctor, at least on my first visit. But the lady never even said "boo" to me... But I did see her pass by... The physicians assistant was very nice and knowledgeable but seemed super flighty. The front office staff was not very friendly. You can tell that they are strictly there to collect a paycheck and nothing else. Not even a smile. Will never return. read more
