Front office staff makes life more difficult than it has to be. Refused to verify insurance. Delayed my appointment.

Dr Stoler is a superb dermatologist- my wife and I have been seeing him for years -- he is kind and thorough. This week Dr Stoler identified a pesky facial rash I've had off and on for decades but manage well with a mild tea tree oil cream. Turns out to be sebaceous hyperplasia - a facial oil gland problem unrelated to acne -- cause is unknown. Maybe sun damage, maybe heredity. Glad to know it's not a fungus! Dr. Edward Stolar is excellent, I recommend him highly, 5 stars for him. BUT I have experienced annoying and frustrating problems with the Metroderm DC office regarding prescription refills. Twice recently, my pharmacy, CVS, has faxed the Metroderm office for authorization of an Rx refill, and both times CVS has texted me that that the office was unresponsive and I should call the prescriber. In both cases when I've done so, the person I spoke to called into CVS a new (and *mistaken*!) Rx, rather than simply authorizing refill of the Rx already on file at CVS. I complained of the first instance when I saw Dr. Stolar recently, and the same communication foul-up just happened again. I have verified with CVS that the pharmacy is using fax number 202-659-0289 to request refill authorizations. Apparently, no one in the Metroderm office is paying proper attention to that fax line. read more

Didn't even get to see Dr. Perkins or any healthcare professional at this office. Made an appointment with this office for the first time / initial consultation. Tried calling the front desk to reschedule my appointment the morning of my appointment because I woke up sick unexpectedly with symptoms. Called at least six times before I finally left a voicemail. I get a call 15 minutes after my appointment time asking where I am. Told the person on the phone that I left a voicemail after calling so many times saying I won't be able to make it. She was unaware of my voicemail, and interrogated me about when I left it. She got defensive, telling me the front desk has 4 persons who have been regularly answering all calls and that I called "the wrong number". She also told me they provided me reminders, and I told her that I never received any reminders. She then proceeded to tell me I will be charged a $50 no-show fee. I asked her if she can please reschedule without the no-show fee as a one-time courtesy, because I am unaware of their policy and because I got unexpectedly sick. I am a first time patient and no one told me of this policy upon scheduling my initial appointment. She then told me there's nothing she can do for me. Even when I tried to call back several times after to discuss further, I still got no answer. So this assertion that the front desk staff has 4 people manning the phones at all times seems rather suspicious. Even if this office has good dermatologists, there are other dermatologists in the DMV area. Not worth the rude front desk staff and the inflexible office policy that they fail to inform you of as a new patient. read more

The big pharma Botox and filler reps were high-heel clicking in and out while I was waiting for my first visit. Too bad skin problems take a back seat to the revenue building cosmetic procedures that this practice does a lousy job of explaining. I decided to try something for laugh lines but they never called to explain the procedure, risks or expectations, so I could not, in good faith, have these doctors touch me. read more

Impressively timely and efficient! I was seen on time for my check up, had a mole removed (for aesthetic purposes), and was out within 30 minutes. Dr. Stolar was very kind and helpful. There was absolutely no pressure to return for repeat appointments or any attempt to upswell next on cosmetic procedures or products. This is an extremely professional practice. read more

I've had 3 horrible experiences at this office and will not be returning again. The receptionists at the front desk are not only unprofessional and rude but also lack communication and organization skills needed in order to succeed. I cannot begin to describe the level of attitude and immaturity that they have expressed over the phone and in person. It is unbelievable that this behavior is acceptable in an environment like this. 1) Due to the limited availability of doctors and stringent M-F office hours, I managed to get an appointment by delaying my lunch break on the one day I was able to work remote (since it is quicker to travel downtown from my home rather than my office in Alexandria). During my second appointment with Michelle, I arrived 5-10min early, but had to wait 1 hour to see her...and this is the 1 hour I allotted for a 30 min procedure+travel time. The employees were rude and did not truthfully say they were running 1 hr behind schedule...I was furious and the only explanation Michelle had was that the front desk incorrectly overbooked her. But if this was the case, shouldn't they have checked the appointments made weeks in advance to prevent this from happening in the first place?! This just speaks to the lack of organization and professionalism at this office. They impacted my work schedule by making me wait over an hour without acknowledging their major mishaps. What is the point of making an appointment weeks in advanced if they operate like this? 2) A few months ago, I had scheduled my 3rd appointment on the one day I was able to work remote. The day before they/Michelle cancelled my appointment. Another inconvenience when I had planned around it weeks in advance. I understand emergencies come up, but why don't they have backup for Michelle? 3) Today, I had gone in for the rescheduled appointment scheduled at 1pm. As I was in the elevator at 12:55pm, Michelle had walked into the same elevator as well. It takes at least 15 min to start the machine so that meant I would have to wait a long time before calling my name. Poor planning on Michelle's and the front office's part for scheduling and planning. Why can't this team plan the schedule correctly? Don't say there's a 1pm slot available, if the doctor isn't going to be ready! Anyways, I checked in with the staff at 12:55pm, and waited until 1:15pm after all of the other 1pm patients were called to kindly check for status. Again, the staff was rude, cold, and unpleasant and gave attitude as they said they had called for Michelle already which I was not aware of. At 1:20, Michelle opened the waiting room door and said that she was having trouble with the machine and it won't be working until next week. Another inconvenience that left me furious. They wasted 1 hr of my time traveling to the office and waiting to be seen...but most importantly they wasted my time away from my job. This office is unprofessional, rude, and disorganized, and they need to fix this establishment. I do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Hannah is the worst aesthetician I've used. I came in for a facial that included milia extraction a couple of years ago. She did such a terrible job with the extraction that after the facial, I looked like I had fallen on my face on broken glass. The scars she left on my forehead took a very long time to heal. I still have a scar on my chin today that is from Hannah's handiwork. I've since then gone to other spas for milia extraction and other aestheticians have been appalled to hear about what Hannah has done to my face. Do not use her services. read more

This rating is only for Hanna the esthetician since I haven't visited the dermatologist yet. Hanna is super knowledgeable and can basically assess your skin when you walk in the door. She's very informative and it's clear that she loves what she does. Hanna is definitely someone you want taking care of your skin! read more

I've lived in several cities across the country, and as a result have had several dermatologists. Dr. Perkins is one of the best I've come across. He was recommended by a friend and also referred to by my GP doctor. Dr. Perkins is a great listener. It had been several years since I had seen a dermatologist and therefore had a list of issues I wanted looked at. He took the time to look at everything and tell me what it was and how to treat it. I've had several procedures for different skin spots, and all the results I've been very happy with. I could not recommend Dr. Perkins highly enough! read more

If you've ever visited Reddit's skin care advice section this will be the type of place you are looking for. Dr. Saurabh Singh was amazing! The only down side is he's only at this location on Fridays otherwise he is at another office in Silver Spring. The office itself took me a minute to find because the entrance is kinda obscured by the little cafe next door but I called them once I got to the area and they walked me through it. Dr. Singh was super patient. He isn't one of those doctors that just talks at you and rushes you through your appointment. He took the time to listen to my concerns, go over my routine with me, and didn't just try to throw antibiotics at me. I can't believe it took this many years to finally find a dermatologist who would listen to me and be willing to try something different. He's definitely a keeper, but I can't speak for any of the other doctors at the practice. I had no issues with setting up appointments or working with the office staff. read more

We have been very pleased with the capable, compassionate care provided by Dr. Edward Solar and the outstanding staff at Metroderm DC since they began treating my son for atopic dermatitis three years ago. Appointments are easy to schedule and always on-time; prescriptions are filled and medical forms are completed promptly and accurately; insurance and billing are handled seamlessly. Most important, Dr. Stolar and his staff have a warm, welcoming manner that puts patients (and parents) at ease. Dr. Stolar takes the time to get to know his patients and to listen and respond to their questions and concerns, which is invaluable in any treating patient but especially those with chronic conditions. We highly recommend this practice for dermatology care. read more

I too have been going to MetroDerm for years (about 12 years). Dr. Perkins is as good as they come! He is funny, and really takes his time with his patients. I have also seen Michelle for laser treatments and she, too, is quite good. However, like other people have posted here, the front office staff leaves a lot to be desired. If they're not outright rude, they're quite abrasive and frequently cut me off before I can finish a sentence. Also, because they rush to cut me off, they don't listen to the service that I'm requesting and often have to repeat myself. I continue to come here because Dr. Perkins is that great and I don't trust anyone else with cosmetic services. However, given the cost of these procedures, and that there are other highly qualified doctors in the area, I would hope that customer service would be paramount. In short, if you can tough out the rude front office staff, you won't regret the results. 6/14/19 - The office manager promptly called me after this review was posted. She took the time to ask thoughtful questions and seek specific feedback. She - and the practitioners - really care about improving the customer service experience. I truly appreciate that they are taking this seriously and are making good strides to improve their staff. read more
