I made a resolution to do more yoga. Robert Boustany developed the Pralaya Yoga System to help develop maximum functional strength. The instructors excel at isolating the parts of the body that require most attention and working through exercises with you to strengthen them. The studio is one room, usually flooded with soft natural light. It's in the Montrose area, serene and beautiful for practice. The instructor made me feel at ease. Unlike other yoga studios where you start to feel like it's a fashion and flexibility competition, Pralaya makes you feel like you are there for your body and mind. And isn't that what yoga is all about? The instructors don't take themselves too seriously, and there are moments when you have to just laugh at frustration about the challenge- in a good way. I won't divulge the powerful secrets of Pralaya yoga, but after my first and second classes quietly and resolutely kicked my a$$, i lay on the ground in savasana and felt restored. My back felt happier, my mind felt peace. Even my fingers and toes felt like they were smiling. FYI- This isn't your typical vinyasa or hatha class. Expect to work hard on strength training and flexibility in muscles you didn't even know you had.

If you want a typical yoga studio/community, this is not it. The class I took a few months ago was with Robert Boustany and he rubbed me the wrong way, with his constant talk about his time with monks in the Himalayas and singling me out during the class. It's also delivered as a hybrid class, which means that there are laptops set up in front of him as he teaches, which took me out of the moment. The people were definitely friendly though.

I absolutely love YogaSix in The Heights! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is welcoming, clean, and calming. The instructors are fantastic--especially Taylor and Jenna! They are both incredibly knowledgeable, encouraging, and bring such great energy to every class. Whether you're a beginner or experienced yogi, they make sure you feel comfortable while also pushing you to improve. The variety of classes is also a huge plus! Whether I'm in the mood for a deep stretch, a challenging workout, or a relaxing flow, there's always something that fits my needs. I did witness one instructor speak pretty rudely to someone who came a little late over the mic a while ago. It rubbed me the wrong way and I haven't booked with her again. That said, every other instructor I've tried has been so kind, knowledgeable, and they really push you in the best way. So glad I found this place!

I have been practicing and teaching yoga for approximately 20 years, and this was, without…read morequestion, the worst experience I have ever had in a yoga studio. I drove nearly an hour from Katy and paid $40 to attend a class with Wayne. The class started late, and approximately 15 minutes into it, Wayne STOPPED THE ENTIRE CLASS to chastise me in front of everyone because I was modifying some of the movements to protect my back and listening to my own body. I was not disrupting the class. I was not interfering with anyone else's practice. I was practicing variations of the movements being taught. Instead of simply allowing me to modify, offering an alternative, or speaking to me privately, Wayne became visibly angry, removed my personal belongings from the room, and told me to leave in front of the entire class. I was stunned. Yoga is not Simon Says. A teacher is there to guide a practice, not demand that every body in the room move identically regardless of what feels safe or appropriate for that individual. "Listen to your body" and "eyes on your own mat" are principles I have encountered throughout decades of practicing and teaching yoga. I have never experienced an instructor react with this level of hostility because a student chose to modify. What makes the situation even more troubling is that Wayne is apparently the owner, so when I attempted to contact the studio afterward to address what happened, the studio number routed directly back to him. I drove an hour. I paid $40. The class started late. And approximately 15 minutes into the class, I was publicly chastised, had my belongings removed from the room, and was told to leave. In 20 years of yoga, I have never been treated this way in a studio.

Claudia is THE pilates princess, you really haven't had the full experience until you've tried one of her classes. JT and Curtina have the best playlists and will push you in the best way, while still ensuring form is on point. Emily G is amazing! Very patient and always gives clear instructions, which is also great for just starting out (but she will still challenge you for sure). They offer pilates 101 and pilates 102 for anyone who may be just starting out or nervous to try pilates. Lastly, the community is top tier. Good vibes from everyone and they do some community/special events as well. It really is more than a gym and you've got to come take class to see for yourself!
