** I have heard the classes here are great - but this is just about the Kirtan/Philosophy class they have every other Monday night.** I have been to Kirtan and dharma talks all over the country (and in India) and this was the worst one I have ever been to - hands down. The man leading the group (he never introduced himself to us) only lead about 10-15 minutes of Kirtan (after he corrected the woman co-leading the class for not following the chant correctly) and then went on to mansplain the room of mostly women. His tone was combative, aggressive, and not at all in the spirit of discussion. His way was the right way, no matter what anyone said about their views and interpretations. Each time a woman spoke, he either interrupted her, arrogantly told her to re-word her thought process, or smirked and straight up told her she was wrong. Dharma/Gita philosophy talks are about creating a space of safety, warmth, and understanding. Kirtan is Bhakti - devotion to God - and supposed to be one of the most sacred, inclusive, uninhibited places to express oneself. This evening wasn't about any of that. It seemingly was about a man who wanted to hear himself talk and argue with everyone about their points of view. I have studied directly with gurus in India and Nepal. I understand that sometimes a teacher will challenge a student - but true teachers do it in a safe way, that ultimately creates a sense of unity above all - no matter the lesson, even if it may come off as harsh. This teacher was not about getting to the ultimate understanding of union. Unity. That's what I want to feel in a yoga space. Also, it's 2019 and I'm super tired of being in groups of women who seem to feel meek, fearful, or shameful about speaking up because a white man has decided to dominate the space. I was actually baffled by this evening. And according to others in the class, I was not the only one who felt put off. I did a new student one-month unlimited Groupon deal earlier this year and attended classes 5-6x/week. After going to the studio 20+ times with 30 days, I never felt that anyone remembered me or was particularly interested in my membership. As a pretty seasoned yogi, the classes felt pretty basic (not in a bad way, but just to be aware their top level is 2/3), with limited hands-on adjustments and very few challenging variations. It's always good to work hard on the basics and and breathing, but from time to time it's nice to take a really intense class where you learn new possibilities...that wasn't really something I found offered at this studio. I guess mostly I was just bummed at the lack of community here...classes are full and the shuffle to get in and out of the studio between classes is hectic, people wear nice designer athleisure clothes, teachers seemed friendly but not super interested in building rapport with students. Beautiful studio, but even though I live a block away, I will probably never come back here. read more

This studio is beautiful. I was in town for the night and randomly stopped here and I'm so glad I did! The class was built to all levels and was very welcoming! The class was great, but the facilities were the highlight. I did the evening class and got to appreciate the sunset, thanks to a beautiful skylight. There is a fine line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. This studio very much tests the line and I'm having a hard time reconciling that, especially when I feel that misinformation has been given about my culture and religion. So glad I found this yoga studio!! I did the 2 week unlimited for $20 offer, then got a 5 class pass and loved the classes so much that I now have a monthly membership. Especially enjoy the heated classes and the fact that they offer later evening classes that I can get to after work. Beautiful studio, amazing staff and instructors who made me feel welcome from the first time I went in there, good sense of community, convenient and free parking at the 3rd Street lot opposite. Classes are always pretty full (which I personally really enjoy) but people always make space for others and in general there is a really friendly atmosphere among students. Before I get into the bad let me first start with what was good. The building is beautiful. It smells nice from all the incense. At the end of my first class the instructor sang a Hindu mantra that was so beautiful and unexpected I almost started to cry. The bad. I signed up for a 10:30 am class with myself, my spouse and our friend whose birthday it was. This was supposed to the kickoff to her day of self care and celebration. We get to the studio on time which in this instance I guess was late because as we walked into the studio we see that the class was beyond full. We had revisited for the class days ago and it seems like they had grossly over booked. When we went up to the front and asked the receptionist what could be done because we had checked in and were using classpass she said she wasn't sure anything could be done but she would write our names down for the owner. She didn't take our phone numbers or emails or anything... I'm going to update this after a few days to see how the studio handles these things. read more

I visited this studio today for the first time, compelled by it's good reviews and location, and it surely did not disappoint. I only wish that it was located in Chicago so I could practice weekly. On an aesthetic level, the studio was beautiful, the room we practiced in was bright, open, clean, and sound carried well through the space making it easy to know what was happening at every point of the hour. The cost was reasonable for a drop in ($20), yoga mats were on site to rent, everyone on staff was exceptionally friendly. The instructor for my class was Molly. She was EXCELLENT. This flow was unlike any I've had, it was SO smooth. In addition, I enjoyed the introspective question presented at the beginning and circled back to at the end. Any additional talk she let into the room only added to the flow. The music was perfect. This class really set my days tone, which was one of positivity and happiness. I fully intend to go to this studio again upon returning. And anyone in Long Beach should add this to their weekly regiment! read more

This is my second review. The first was when I first joined. Now after a little more than a year at Yoga108 I still love this place. I come from a long time practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so I know what it's like to have a challenge mentally and physically. The Level 2/3 classes here fulfill that for me. If you want a challenge hit up Courtney, Karen's or Theresa's 2/3 classes. There are also mellow classes as well as Yin Yoga. I just graduated from the 200HR Teacher Training here and I was blown away by my experience so many amazing people that came to teach us and expand our practice with, I cant say thank you enough to Molly & Theresa for such an amazing program they have here at the studio. I have a pretty stressful work life. Towards the end of last year, I knew that if I didn't find a way to decrease my stress AND get some exercise, my career would no longer continue to be sustainable. I feel lucky to have found Yoga108, and even luckier that it's so close to my apartment. I've been coming to the Level 1 classes for about 2 months now, and I can feel the differences in both my body and my attitude. I love the simplicity and cleanliness of the studio. The staff and owners aren't trying to sell you anything extra, but are truly focusing on the basics: clean spaces (not always the case when it comes to heated yoga), a supportive atmosphere, and truly passionate teachers. Each teacher is different, so I recommend mixing up the days of the week until you find one you really work well with. I love the Wednesday classes with Molly, and I now go to the Monday classes with Jane. Both of these teachers provide grounding and a spiritual "bite" at the beginning of each class, which helps me pair the exercise with mindfulness and mental/spiritual reflection. I would not necessarily recommend this studio for someone who hasn't practiced *any* yoga before. Even the Level 1 class relies upon some basic understanding of the poses and the practice, but if you are a fast learner you'll catch on in a few classes. I would advise at least learning some of the basics (downward dog, tree pose, child) before coming to class. That being said, each teacher I've had has been incredibly positive and affirming. When they adjust your pose, they do so with love and support. No one pushes you to look good or shames you for not completing a pose; the emphasis is on how you feel. There are also additional Basics workshops, and frequent events (which I haven't attended, but am interested in). The owners seem invested in created a community around yoga practice, rather than just making money or building a brand. These classes are invaluable for anyone looking for a mindful exercise practice. There is free parking across the street, and a juice bar next door. The owner responded to my first review and offered go extend my pass as well as suggested some instructors who would be a good fit for me. I must say that I am so glad that I continued going! I of course took Madhuri's advice on the classes to take and they were way more along the introspective vibe I was looking for. I love that during the pandemic they offered online classes and I hope they continue to do so now that they are back open. I'm so happy they survived the shut down! Purple Yoga had some amazing instructors. One went to Los Alamitos and the others opened up Yoga 108. Love this place. Has a much more intimate feel, the infrared heat is crazy because you don't feel it at first but 10 minutes into your session, you're on fire. Love the music and chanting that Purple lacked. I tried out Yoga108's all levels 6am class one morning when I was in town visiting my parents. Matt was my instructor and there were only about 5 other people in the class. We were able to spread out and feel comfortable in our own space. I like the 75 minute format and it was challenging at times. I would say that all levels is really not for beginners. I've been doing yoga once a week or so for about 8 months. Granted, I'm not very good at it but I love the serenity and peace it brings. All of the others in the class were more advanced than me and it pushed me to challenge myself. Although the class was not easy, I never felt out of place or not good enough. I am currently apart of the work study program that Yoga108 offers. I first tried out the studio this summer through a groupon I purchased that gave me unlimited access for a month. I knew right away that I wanted to be a member of the studio and I actually was in the process of adding more classes to my dance teaching schedule in order to be able to afford the monthly membership fee when one of the lovely and sweet owners Molly reached out to me about being apart of the work study program. It was very serendipitous and worked out perfectly with my schedule. I am a registered yoga teacher myself but I haven't been teaching consistently in over a year due to my dance teaching schedule so I decided I needed to focus on my personal practice for now. I fell in love with this studio because of the spiritual aspect of Yoga that they weave into their studio. Yoga helped me connect to my spirituality so it's important to me that my home studio also incorporates and speaks of our connection to the divine. Now moving onto the physical aspect of Yoga - ALL OF THE TEACHERS ARE AMAZING AT SEQUENCING AND LEADING YOGA ASANA. They offer heated all levels and heated level 2/3 classes as well as non heated beginners and yin yoga classes so there are definitely classes offered for whatever level your practice is at. I LOVE this studio. I don't live in California, but I am in Long Beach for work about twice a month and I have struggled to find a studio that balances good price, good teachers, and good schedules. Yoga 108 has all 3. I bought their 2 week unlimited course ($20 OMG!!) and I am thrilled and excited to take my next class each time. The space is well thought out, with 2 studios- one for heated and one for normal classes. They offer infrared heat, this means the room isn't just heated with a furnace or space heaters. The infrared heat warms you from the inside, so I didn't feel hot air blowing on me, no weird smell in the room, and no sense of grime. The instructor (Reika) was phenomenal! Her flow was on point. It had a great tempo and I felt challenged, but not defeated. She was happy to suggest some other teachers she liked at the end of the class and even looked up the schedule for me. I bought some classes because I'm getting back into yoga. But this studio doesn't cater to true beginners. There are no level 1 classes in a normal room for people just trying to learn yoga and get better during the week. All the beginner classes are either super heated or outside. I'm just trying to get the positions down first and there aren't classes during the week in a regular yoga room. I feel beginners should be able to just focus on learning the practice before getting heat or having to wash off their mat after every class. Only the weekends have all level classes and it's a short schedule and it a stretching class. I literally pay for classes at a more distant studio so I can practice during the week. I understand if they are understaffed but that has not been communicated to me. I had to buy a cheap mat for their courtyard classes cause it gets all full of soot and has to be rinsed every time. You also get covered in soot on your feet and limbs. Not everyone wants hot yoga. The heat can be distracting. The courtyard can be distracting and hard to hear. Just something to be aware of before joining if you are a beginner. read more

This review is only in relation to meditation Monday. Any time a woman spoke, they were put down or told that their point of view was incorrect. This is not what a safe space looks like. The guy running the class made several people uncomfortable as was discussed afterward. It would be one star but I actually do really enjoy the yoga classes I've taken here. This studio is not only amazing in teaching the asana aspect of yoga, but most importantly in giving its members a space to dive into the spiritual aspect of it, if they want to. I specially love the Monday night philosophy class offered every other week. Tuka das has a unique style of presenting the Bhagavad Gita and really helps anyone (from a beginner to an advanced yogi) to actually understand Krishna's words and brilliance by problematizing the topics addressed and stating every possible question and doubt that anyone may ever have. He then offers a solution to each point systematically and logically in such a way that by the end of the class, I have not only learned what the Gita teaches, but how to resolve those doubts for others and to really never forget the answers given. It is rare to find these kinds of teachers, that are bold and unafraid to stand by the texts they represent and logically unpack it without allowing the audience to speculate or share whatever ideas they may have about it. As a studio member, I am not looking for a place where I can share my thoughts and be validated, I am looking for a place and people that are experts in this field so that i can LISTEN TO AND LEARN the knowledge that their teachers passed down to them and to be guided through the process that they live by. If you want a yoga studio that will not only transform your physical practice but also your spiritual quest, then Yoga 108 is it. If you are uncomfortable having teachers that live what they teach and are unapologetic about it, then stay away from the Monday philosophy class, because it will change your life for the better and not everyone is ready for that. I've gone to 3 yoga classes here so far. The owner, Theresa, is awesome. She is super liberal about classes not expiring. I've only done non-heated yoga--however be aware that if a hot yoga class has just let out, the non heated studio will still be warm. The space is really nice and newly built/ looks clean and updated. I especially like the convenient lunch class, and they have lots of class times, 7 days/ week. I've had two different teachers and they've both been great. If I had one complaint it would be I would love if they limited class sizes, some get a little packed. And also if they didn't allow late students to enter the class. But small things for sure. I'm not in great shape and still feel super welcome here and like I can go at my own pace without pressure. This is my favorite yoga studio!!! I have been practicing on and off for a number of years. This studio is taking my practice to another level by including chanting and meditation. Also I think the teachers are psychic because they ALWAYS know what to say!!! I often wonder how they collaborate so well! It has such a great energy. There are multiple options for classes so that you can always catch a class and there are hot classes as well as room temperature classes. The hot classes are nice because they aren't as hot as bikram yoga. I really enjoy this studio and go practically everyday. I'm thankful that I was guided to Yoga 108!! read more

I signed up for the $20/2wks and am really enjoying my experience here. I've gotten so much out of every class that I've taken and I already feel my yoga practice getting stronger.
