I don't get the chance to visit many 'mountaineering' shops anymore for one reason... I've got a…read moreton of very high quality gear that has lasted me for many years but when I need something, like a recent pair of SCARPA boots, I visit Bent Gate. For many of us climbers, we used to have similar shops from yesteryear, Holubar, Frostline, Boulder Mountaineer, the 'old school' REI and the vintage Neptune Mountaineering, these shops had high quality gear that lasted the test of time and wear. Nowadays, fashion rather than function seems to be the selection at 'outdoor' shops. Ok... there's Bent Gate that still carries higher quality gear for folks who like to 'get at it'. Sure, you get what you pay for but the stuff does what it's supposed to do albeit at a price point a little higher than average. However, if you ever needed gear that will not fail, buy the better stuff for in the long run, you'll not only come out ahead but it might save your life. Bent Gate is such a company that strives for selling better gear... period!

Cassidy-who runs the shop-knows his stuff--he's also really nice and easy to talk to as I admitted I'm not a cool, powder skiing, challenge-seeking type(anymore) and that I've never skied on wide skis. He helped me choose the Maiden 91s. I skied on them for the first time the other day and OMG--best skiing day maybe ever--everything just seemed easier. I might even revisit powder this season. I love this shop too--cool gear, gifts etc. I bought the rack to display my skis on my wall since they are also a rad work of art. Honestly, I felt that the gear selection seemed limited, mostly on part for biking equipment and accessories. Feral carries a few multi-use items like sunglasses, hydration packs, and headlamps, but other than that, nothing else. The store also lacks in service. There were three young ladies working at the front of the store, chatting amongst themselves. Not one customer was greeted when (we) walked in and checking out felt like an inconvenience to the staff. Prices here on new gear is a bit on the higher side in comparison so it's worth it to shop around (online).

It was an incredible time finding all these adorable 4th of July merchandise. I love shopping for deals and Marshalls never fails. The only negative thing I can say about this retailer is that they have a horrible layaway policy, but it could possibly be just those particular stores I've visited with a lack of space so you can barely utilize their layaway option. Some cool facts are: Marshalls has over 1,000 American stores, including larger stores named Marshalls Mega Store, covering 42 states and Puerto Rico, and 61 stores in Canada. Marshalls first expanded into Canada in March 2011.

The New location is the Opposite. You feel like a Criminal walking in and Out under the eye of Police who give you the 'onceover'. The Staff are at best indifferent, few if any, and when ask for help where something might be, a casual vague point to 'it's 'over there' with little interest. The Selection is sparse, almost like left- overs that Stores won't take, general merch is seemingly shoddy and almost as if one is shopping for a different low quality brand. After a number of Store visits to see if the selection or quality or Service is improved I have given up. I can find the 'Good Stuff" in other stores who have what I want - not what is a seeming compromise. maybe it's the New Nike that has lost its way. No wonder their Stock price is a shambles reflecting the Management Team. They have killed the brand with indifference - their Outlet Store Model is horrible.
