I'm from New York City. On the Saturday before Easter, I went to an event in East Hampton. After getting off the Hampton Jitney bus, I had some free time before the event. I headed to the East Hampton YMCA. A day pass is $30. I think that's borderline expensive. The locker room is as hot as a sauna. The weight area has standard free weights and machines. However, it's too cramped. There are also cardio machines. A narrow ramp leads to a small area on the second floor where people can do push-ups, sit-ups, calisthenics, etc. The gym has an outdoor basketball court with one hoop. I'm never going to pass up an opportunity to shoot some hoops. After lifting weights, I wore a wool hat, sweater, and shorts, and shot hoops for 20 minutes. Since it was so freaking cold, no one else was outside. Since I didn't use the pool, I can't comment on that. A monthly adult membership is $75. Considering how expensive this gym is, it should be a lot better. read more

Very nice staff but women's showers especially floors are so dirty. There is grime in the rubber/crevices. If it was cleaner I would recommend it. read more

The EH Rec Center has now reached new lows. The place is dirty and they have just 2 hard working people cleaning. When they are off for the weekend, the facility is a health hazard. The weight equipment is insufficient for the amount of people using the gym. Now the roof collapsed and the management of the pool hours is non-existing. The pool is over crowded in order to accommodate the swim teams, which should be swimming on off hours like every other collegiate and town swim teams, are scheduled for prime time --12:00 pm. There is a real management issue! read more

I've been coming to this gym for years and it's driven me batty. First off, the layout is awful. Such a waste of space which makes the free weight area a total disaster. The entire gym is dirty. The bathrooms and locker rooms are so outdated and ugly. There has been a campaign to renovate and while they've upgraded some of their equipment, I haven't seen any major overhaul of the space. It's simply way below the normal standard for a gym. There's no towel service and if you want to buy one it will cost you $10.50! I keep going back each summer to see if they've done an upgrade and get so disappointed and frustrated. Total bummer. read more

*Sings* It's our town, a community thing, people together OH! What a feeling! I can't remember what year it was, but my elementary school class was forced to sing that cheesy song over and over for a fund-raising commercial. From the outside, the big ugly building doesn't look like much, but it took A LOT of fund-raising to get it built. Tiles were sold at the local ceramic painting place (no longer open) for an exorbitant amount, but came with the priceless promise of being included in the wall of the pool area. My tile is still there. Anyways, enough reminiscing... The Rec Center isn't exactly what they wanted it to be, but it offers a decently priced gym membership and just enough equipment to make it worth your while. The YMCA camp was pretty iffy the last I heard, I had some friends who worked there and there were some problems with the new management. I'm not sure if they've gotten them hammered out. read more

I've got to hand it to this facility... They have rewritten the book. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse. Line of the night by the woman at the desk: In a loud bark "WE CLOSE IN TEN MINUTES BUT YOU CAN WORK OUT FOR THOSE TEN MINUTES". And she follows it by telling me that "some people only need ten minutes to work out". Yesterday it was the showers did not work. Personally who would ever want to take a shower before or, heaven forbid after, a workout on a Saturday night after work? After trying to get some water out of the shower I asked why they were not working. The line of this night was "the showers have a little less water when we fill the pool". Glad to know you don't do something like fill the pool on off hours. There are some upsides though. For one, if you have a passion for the stench of urine you are in luck!!! This place is permeated with it!!!! You won't get away from the stench of piss. Another upside? If you love a confusing, cluttered and bunched set of gym equipment look no further! You have no less that four separate mini workout areas!!! Even better you ask? They are all in mini triangles separated by a magic walkway!!! Yay!!!! Do yourself a favor... Go elsewhere. It is dirty, rancid and staffed by angry people. read more

In the last two years EH Ymca has under gone numerous improvements.New treadmills ,ellyptical ,bikes .This year's lots of new spin bikes yeah!!!! Little ladies are always busy cleaning wiping vacuuming. New showers marble and real tiles! Great spin and trx yoga zumba classes. I've been a member for 6 yrs I think it's on the improve for sure. Pool continues to be a point of frustration.The staff is however recognizing the issues and working on it. read more

One of the nicest Y pools I've ever swum in. Perfect water, temp always just right, huge windows, lots of sunlight, great ventilation. Dropped one star for minuscule lockerroom. Also has a warm water auxiliary pool. read more

I would like to thank the East Hampton YMCA RECenter both personally and professionally! I joined the Y about 10 years ago and will never forget walking in that first morning to take an aerobics class. It took every ounce of courage I had to walk into that back room. Having struggled with my weight my entire life, I was fearful that I would be judged or ridiculed. I entered the room and made sure to stand way in the back and close to the door so that if and when I realized that I could not keep up, I would be able to sneak out. Well... that one class literally changed my whole life- the instructor- the Y's fitness director Rosie Orlando intuitively knew that I wanted to stay invisible- she didn't draw attention to me or offer up platitudes- "Come on New Girl- you can do it!" She just gave me a little smile in the mirror and started the class- it wasn't easy- I am sure I was 50 shades of purple- but I made it to the end of that first class and showed up the next day and the day after that- in a few months' time I had moved myself out of the back corner by the door and felt like I had found a home! I went on to train for and compete in triathlons and was inspired to start an empowerment program for adolescent girls through the sport of triathlon, called i-tri.(www.itrigirls.org) Without the support of the East Hampton YMCA this program would have NEVER had a chance- today we are in 4 different schools and will be training close to 100 girls from the East End (MIND-BODY and SPIRIT) to compete in a youth distance triathlon! Our community is a better place because of the Y and the talented and dedicated staff that bring the place to life! read more
