I recently attended a wedding at Camp Marshall and what a unique, rustic venue it was! The…read moreceremony, cocktail hour, and reception were held on the grounds across various settings with plenty of parking for guests. The ceremony occurred in a large open field with deep bench seating arranged in a way that made it very easy to view the exchange of vows. A well-manicured lawn and forested backdrop helped set the stage for this country chic, burlap, and lace-themed wedding. A couple of steps up to the lawn itself hid the bride well-enough for the big reveal as she walked arm and arm to the altar. Following the ceremony, guests filtered over to the main barn area of the camp. Not sure who is in charge of signage (the camp or the couple) but a few more/larger signs might have made it easier to determine exactly which barn/outbuilding we were supposed to relocate to. Drive slow because "holy potholes, Batman!". Depending on the car, you could really scrape up your undercarriage on the roads through camp. Hadn't thought about the offroading needs of my car when deciding on a vehicle to bring. In any case, the guests did find their way to the reception area and were greeted by the warmly lit, rustic interior of the Camp Marshall barn. Very large space for tables, chairs, buffet, DJ/dance floor, and bar area. Large barn doors acted as an effective method of temperature control for the fall-like evening. High ceilings made for a dramatic setting. Exposed wood combined with string lighting and flowers was an aesthetic success. (To top it all off, I hear this was an affordable venue to rent out!) Sounds like a winning combination! Looking for a rustic-themed wedding? This may be your venue! From the website, it looks like there are a number of ceremony locations to choose from on the grounds.

Looking back, I definitely think that our family hikes here helped to foster a lifelong love for the outdoors and nature. I recently brought my 9 month old daughter here, and along with my husband and her grandma, we spent an awesome afternoon checking out the live animal habitats and then going on a short hike around the trails. Inside there are birds, turtles, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and reptiles. The trails are well-maintained. While the sanctuary is free, donations are appreciated, and all proceeds from the gift shop go to support it. This is a wonderful way to introduce kids to nature and to experience the great outdoors of central New England.

I have only one complain, town of Charlton does not take care of the road to the sanctuary and the road is horrible. Please drive carefully on Capen Road, the sanctuary is all the way to the end. Especially in winter if the caretaker (another nice and caring fellow) does not plow snow, it becomes very difficult to reach inside. Please keep in mind this place is surviving mostly on donation from peers, so please show your generosity if you visit.

I wasn't sure what to expect at Boundless, but I think they really helped a lot with making sure we felt comfortable and safe! I recommend bringing your own protective gardening gloves. They rent gloves on site as well. There are porta pottys on site as well as gatorades and ice cream in a cooler, and a dirt lot to park your car in. There is a station where staff members harness you up and then you go through a safety training where you learn how to use your zip line truck and your clickits. You can practice a little bit and then you are ready to hit the courses! The ropes courses are color coded by difficulty. Yellow to green to blue to black. I found the various elements unpredictable and interesting! Courses can include climbing elements or ziplines, moving through tree tops and wooden platforms. It's a lot of fun! The staff will rescue you if you are stuck or fall off. I had a hand injury and wanted to exclusivly zipline but I realized that there are no standalone zip lines, you have to move through the courses in order to get to ziplines. I ended up finding a nice barrel/tunnel to hang out in on one of the greens. I rested there for 30 minutes and people watched, dozed slightly, etc. It was very calm and lovely! Def the highlight of my visit. I was also very pleasantly delighted by the wonderful help from staff members who were constantly wandering and monitoring people. I lost a croc charm and a staff member noticed and helped me look for it. I was reallly grateful for their proactiveness! If it's a hot day, don't forget to drink water between each course!

There is also specific sports camps each week, such as Rich Gedman's baseball camp where they see a Woosox game at the end of the week, or basketball camp where they travel to the basketball hall of fame. There's also soccer and all sports camp if you can't choose. In every camp and also during the normal days you can swim in either the indoor or outdoor pool. The outdoor pool was recently renovated. The fitness center is on the smaller end but they have a great selection of free weights and machines to where it doesn't feel like it's lacking anything. The facilities are also well-maintained since they are clean and properly managed. My biggest concern for this place, however, is the affordability of the memberships. I'm sure the up-keeping of the facility can be expensive, but the prices only attract a particular group of people. Perhaps this is intentional; I am always looking for places that seek to incorporate diversity, both economically and racially. Keeping up with the monthly membership price is surely not sustainable for someone who lives off minimum wage or, even for someone who makes a bit more. Thus, though this can be a fun and safe place for the community, it lacks the actual representation of the latter. Moreover, no incentive programs currently exist to make this place a bit more affordable for the average working-class family in the city. Now, while they do have a family plan, it is exclusively for immediate family. I tried to create a membership with my older brothers but, was told that the family membership was only for my spouse and children. of which I have neither. This is truly a disappointment since with the single membership, you can only bring a guest with you once a month; after that there is a fee. So, if you're someone like me, who likes to bring a friend along to help with climbing or to encourage you with working out, this isn't the place for you. Unless of course, you friend wants to purchase a membership, too. But again, it´s just not cost-efficient or worth it for the average low/medium income person. But, for those of you who make a good amount of money, this place can definitely be worth it. They offer a wide range of workout classes and opportunities to get better at rock climbing. You'll just want to make sure you're taking advantage of everything- to make the dollar count. Overall, I really enjoy rock climbing, and this facility is truly well-managed and maintained. It has a lot of potential to actively engage with the community it's in; however, whether intentional or not, it greatly lacks in being a racially and economically diverse space. This is truly unfortunate for a place as fun and engaging as this one can be. Frankly, it's intimidating when you can count, with one hand, the number of people of color during a typical night, or even to witness the non-existence of the lower/ lower-middle class. And if you're from Worcester, you know it's a large community they're keeping out, a community that is greatly diverse. This facility has the opportunity to bring people together, but unfortunately, the prices hinder this from doing so and have instead, settled for just one particular group. And oh! the prices just recently went up $5.00 for all memberships.
