My experience with Camp Colman spans years, as a camper, as a counselor, and now as an alumni member. To say this camp has changed my life is an understatement. As a young child, I can recall all the magic that Colman brought to my life. I made amazing friends, played wonderful games, sang silly songs, and learned so many important lessons that I have carried with me today. This had such a huge impact on my life, that when I was old enough to get a summer job, I became a counselor. I even remember deciding as a camper to one day become a counselor so I could be as cool as the counselors that I so fondly looked up to. The three summers that I spent as a Camp Colman Counselor were some of the best of my life. It has been 8 years since I first started as a staff member and I still use many of the tools in my professional career that I learned as a counselor. I look back at the amazing friendships I forged during my time at camp, most whom I am still in touch with, and I am thankful for the experience. However, what I am most thankful for is the impact the children had on me. There are a million different experiences that happen when living at camp, but the fondest memories are the times spent with the kids. They teach you so many important lessons without even realizing it. As someone the children look up to during their time at camp, you hope to provide them with comfort and life essentials, educate them to be good, support their creativity, believe in their ability to to step outside their comfort zone, and give them an all around great experience at camp. But without realizing it, the kids do the same for you. Some of these kids are only in your life for one week, but you will remember them for the rest of your life. Because of the impact Camp Colman had on me, I continue to serve the camp as an alumni member to ensure the kids today get the same experience I had as a child.
Camp Colman as a whole is a magical place. The feeling you get while you are there is one you are unlikely to forget. You get away from the norm, free of technology and the worries of the world. You are provided with an environment where you are free to be yourself and express your pains and worries. Most importantly, you get to have fun! I highly recommend this camp to parents who want their kids to have a fun, exciting, impacting experience.
