Great, local, no-frills bouldering gym in Tacoma. My husband and I moved from the Bay Area to…read moreSeattle and have been checking out the local bouldering scene in the PNW - Climb Tacoma has been one of our favorite gyms to check out on a day pass since it's near my parents. FACILITIES For bouldering? Wide variety of routes for different levels and technical focus. For example, a lot of bouldering gyms we've been to have their routes go vertical to fit more climbing onto a set of panels. I like that Climb Tacoma has options where a route might go across, so I get to practice different climbing techniques. Some routes exercise grip strength, others may be more core or balance focused. It makes the experience more fun and rewarding when you complete the beta. I've only been climbing actively for a little over 7 months and can climb up to V2 routes; my husband can climb up to V5/V6. Climb Tacoma has been great because we're both able to keep busy with how many routes there are. There's even a small area for kids to practice climbing and a fun spray wall to test different holds. My only complaint with their bouldering is that their labeling system can be very confusing - you need to look at the tape color to indicate difficulty... not the color of the hold. For exercising? It's lacking - a very small fitness / workout area with little equipment compared to other climbing gyms in the area. I would say comparable to small fitness centers you get in hotels. That said... I don't come here for that, I come to boulder. LOCATION + PARKING Location is off S 38th ST so really close to Tacoma Mall or the Vietnamese area of S 38th ST... making it pretty convenient for finding food after a climbing session. In terms of crowds, it's never been a problem coming here on the weekends, the day before a holiday, or in the middle of a weekday (ex/ for their Monday special for "Femmes and Themes". Their parking seems a bit small but it's never been an issue for us as we're always able to find a spot. OVERALL Coming from the Bay Area, I appreciate how chill this climbing gym. It doesn't play loud music, people are respectful when it comes to climbing and there aren't "influencer" or gym bro vibea you get from Silicon Valley / SF gyms. If you are looking for a high end gym with the works like towel service, saunas, yoga classes, etc... then I would suggest looking elsewhere. If you're just looking to boulder in the area, this gym is great for that with extremely fair pricing. Other climbing gyms, pricing is understandably higher because there may rope courses with higher overhead. I like that what I pay here is for bouldering... and there are lots of options to choose from. Make sure to check their site for specials like Half Price First Fridays or the $15 "Femmes and Thems" discount (rentals included)!

The park is also very large with plenty of grass, trees for shade, picnic tables, covered eating areas, and restrooms. This really is an ideal place to spend a few hours letting the little ones get some exercise and have a picnic if you wish. So why only a three stars you ask? The neighborhood is AWFUL!!!! It is full of rift rafts who congregate at this park at all hours. During the day your likely to run into teenagers skipping from near by high school and middle school and occasionally you get a few tweekers who lay on the benches or sit on the playground equipment talking to themselves. The teenagers are the worst of the bunch, they come to smoke cigs and be as vulgar as possible. They also use the equipment for drawing inappropriate pictures on as well as their own personal toilet (I have seen this more then once). It's really a shame cause like I stated earlier this is a great park that is just suffering because it is being overrun by delinquents.

Ferry Park is right in the middle of the street. The street divides around it which makes it very unique and memorable. In addition to that there is some signage that illustrates the history of the park which is very interesting. It sounds like this is Tacoma's first park which is cool. On these signs it describes the various face lifts the park has gone through over the years and how back in the 1940's the children in the neighborhood launched a protest due to the park experiencing disrepair and the removal of amenities. The children won out in that one. The park isn't a very big one so some of the changes that it has gone through is moving playground equipment to one corner of the park so the rest can be a playing field. At one point in time there were quite a few statues here but some got moved to Wright Park. Currently there aren't any statues at all. Kind of a sad thing... as the signs indicate that the park has experienced disrepair and neglect in the past it seems like the same issues remain. There are large cotton wood trees around the park fence and a very large branch came and struck one part of the fence, really busting it up. I'm not sure if this was recent or not... it appeared to be and may have been due to recent snowy weather but it is a bit of a concern as to how soon the repairs could happen. In comparison to other parks in town Ferry Park is definitely more on the basic side. There are no water features, pools to play in the summer (but there once was) or anything like that but the merit I found with this park was more it's history than anything else.

My first time on the trail I was hiding painted rocks for people to find. It was quite a phenomenon in the area for a brief time until people burned themselves out on it and it all just became a phase. But not only that it was raining cats and dogs and I was still out hiding rocks. Very soggy but still fun but I definitely hurried up and hid all the rocks I had. Since then we have moved just slightly closer to on the way there and we are close to the direct route to Spanaway. So fresh after we moved in I visited this park quite a few times and really enjoyed the trail and made sure it was better weather when I went there. The trail is scenic as you can view Spanaway Lake right alongside the trail making it a very enjoyable stroll. Folks in Spanaway really need a park like this because there really isn't a whole lot of other intriguing things to do right in Spanaway.

I came because my friends wanted to take me canoeing. I am so thankful for them taking me here because it is gorgeous! Once you enter, you have to pay $3 for parking, but I think that goes for the upkeep of the park/trail/lake. We parked around the loop, took our first few steps towards a small downhill trail. It led us to the bathroom. Might I add, they are actually clean for public restrooms! There are over 10 stalls, pretty clean, but no toilet seat covers and hand soap! Yuck! This is one of the reasons why it's not a perfect 5 star. Otherwise, it's so clean and nice. The trail ( I don't know how far it is) is clean too filled with a beautiful view of the lake. So breathtaking! We walked over to the boat house to rent canoes. They rent out canoes, kayaks, row boats and pedal boats. After a while, we decied we wanted the pedal boats where we us our legs to pedal. Haha, it was so much fun! It's $7 for an hour but unfortunately, they only take cash and you need a $10 deposit. Right when we got in the water though, it was breathtaking! Nothing but clean water, beautiful skies, and the scenery was just gorgeous! Pedaling through the water and seeing houses, docks, and just the beauty of nature. I enjoyed it. Perfect for summer! The trail is lovely. Great view, nice clean bathrooms, and there are even clean play grounds too. Perfect for BBQs, family gatherings, boating, jet skiing, canoeing, fishing, etc. Not many places to swim, but it is still really nice, with decent parking and a great view. I think it's so peaceful and relaxing to come to a nice place to enjoy the trail and nature.
