They have incredibly friendly and helpful staff on hand to answer questions and point you in the direction of what you're looking for. We went in search of a few items to make our winter walking safer and more comfortable and found everything we needed and then some. Wow, I live around the corner from this store and never visited, thinking that it must be overpriced and never went in. This winter, I was looking for a rare item and this was the only store that looked like carried it. I was a bit apprehensive about going in, but what was I thinking! The store has totally changed my views on locally owned shops. Prices are actually not higher than the mall (Nordstrom, Macy's, etc.), the staff are actually kind and helpful, and there is a cute dog hanging out and wagging its tail! I had a great experience getting a rare item in my size at a lower price than expected, with smiles and kindness through the end of the transaction. Totally worth it, and definitely where I'll be heading from now on! read more

I'm a huge fan of this shop. I recently came into get a pair of shoes and the service was top notch. I left with a pair Olukai shoes that I have worn every night since I've bought them. My favorite new pair of shoes. I love stopping by and seeing all the new products and brands they have in the shop. Its really fun to learn about different brands I haven't heard before. Agree with the other reviewers. This is a beautiful, family run store with great products. The service is impeccable. Just prior to the Covid-19 shutdown I went for the first time to purchase a new winter coat. I tried it on in the store but after wearing it for the first time I realized that I had purchased a size too small (my fault). I went back to the store and talked to the owners who were more than happy to help but didn't have any similar jackets in my size due to being the end of the season. They gave me the option of leaving the jacket with them or processing a refund while they tried to locate one from their vendor. It was so apparent how trustworthy they were that I decided to just leave it there. In the middle of the pandemic, with I'm sure many worries about their business on their minds, the owners were in constant communication and went way above and beyond to resolve my issue. My friend Gina took me to this clothing boutique that I did not know existed. They sell fashionable and technical outdoor clothing. There were a lot of of brands like Barbour and Canada Goose that I knew, but many that I had not seen before. The saleswoman, Sydney, was helpful and knowledgeable about the product as well as places to eat in the neighborhood. She was also a big advocate of wool over fleece and was happy to explain why the products were selected to be in the store. I would go back next time I need another jacket. This store offers more thoughtful options when compared to the big box's. read more

Today we went to check out one of the newest stores in the Silver Spring line up in Whitefish Bay. Yellow Wood is an outdoor gear store with hiking, camping, accessories, and apparel. Focusing on smaller independent brands rather than the traditional Northface, Columbia, and Patagonia that are the staple of other outdoor gear stores, YW looks for companies whose mission to better the world is as important as their bottom line. I was blown away by the high quality selection of products. Topo Designs, Mountainsmith, Woolrich, Miir Bottles, Outdoor Research, and Frost River to name a few. We were making mental lists of all the great gifts for the future. The customer experience was just as pleasant. Displays were attractively designed making the products easy to see and handle. The owners happened to there as well, extremely welcoming and friendly. I would go on but you should really go and experience YW yourself!! Highly recommend. read more

This is as good as an outdoor shop gets. The best gear available, and great staff who use the gear. It's a more clothing centric shop than some but they still have packs and bags, climbing gear, stoves, tents, and hardware. I've gone out of my comfort zone and bought new brands here that I hadn't seen before and I couldn't be happier with the quality and fit. read more

The selection is top notch, with products from companies that are both well-established and up-and-coming. Regardless, the quality is superior. The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable.
