My frist trip to the Starving Man was the day I arrived from a month study tour in Lucca, Italy and was desperate for a burger....SOMETHING that wasn't pasta or pizza! I had a burger and chips and it was pretty f---ing fit! I think I had fish n chips later in the week! MY FAVE! The other visits have been purely in search of one thing...a kebab! YUM! You can't really get anything like a good kebab in America (that I've found) and I enjoy them! A little lemon juice, ketchup and mayo! It's the great ending to a night out or sitting around my friend's kitchen table having a few glasses of vodka and a spliff! The reason being is the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. On the weekends it can get busy after hours as the pubs and bars empty and punters look for a quick bite, but everyone always seems in good spirits. The highlights for me are the pizzas, which have a thin, crispy base, and the lamb kebab which is very simple, served with naan, fresh salad and yoghurt sauce. Of all the big high street names though, Nando's has to be my 'most-liked' as the food just tastes that bit more wholesome than the burgers and fried chicken you can get elsewhere. So I shared my workmates' pleasant surprise when we heard that they were opening a new restaurant near the Lowry Outlet, and waited for its opening. A birthday lunch of a colleague brought a group of us in here and we were glad we booked in advance as the place was really packed. Had we known we could have pre-ordered our meals before arrival we would have done, as we were told there would be a 25 minute wait for food and they weren't wrong. A couple of trips to the soft drink vending machine later and the food started arriving, along with a sincere apology from the manager. They were newly opened, very busy and had two large groups who arrived very late, so we totally sympathised. The food we ordered was all very good, everyone had empty plates. The interior is full of reclaimed wood, from the walls to the massive lamp shades. There seems to be a trend to use this in places these days which is great. Being brand new, the whole place was obviously shiny and clean. Welcome to the neighbourhood, we've been chicken-deprived for too long.

Find Atlas by looking for the short queue snaking out the door onto Wilmslow Road just before Claremont Road, opposite the renowned Jaffa. Atlas is a takeaway with premises just three metres wide and three stools to perch on by a side-counter. However, this is a very serious food business focused on doing just a few things well - fresh tandoor naan, kebabs and falafel (see photos for the menu). I can't speak for the kebabs, but talking to the Arabs in the queue, there were a lot of not just customers but *big* fans of this place! As cooked to order, the falafels take a little longer to serve but you can be served and out in 5 minutes from the time you order. Broadly speaking, I've found two very different types of falafel in Manchester - the stolid 'staple food' type (which need dips to be palatable) served at places such as Jaffa and Caspian; and the lush, green, melting type typified by Rusholme's eponymous Falafel café - Atlas's are of the Falfel-type! Fascinated, I watched through to the back of the kitchen as the custom falafel-making tool* dipped five times from the chickpea-and-fresh-herb mixture to the fryer. Once cooked, your falafel arrive on a naan bread which has just emerged from the tandoor for you to chose your salad, yoghurt and mayonnaise - I skip the onion and mayonnaise but the rest of it is good, with the tomatoes very juicy. Thing is, with food so clearly cooked to order, I feel it a huge sin to do other than perch on a stool and devour immediately! Such warm, clean, nutritious, juicy goodness! Lastly, at a modest £2 for a falafel wrap and 50p more for a kebab, you only need to be a little convinced by my review to checkout Atlas. Atlas also sells tandoor naan at 4 for £1. In a nice touch, neighbouring Marmara Grill allows sit-in customers to enjoy Atlas breads with their (Marmara) food. So many businesses are named after legends, but how many businesses are actually legendary? Watch Atlas's tandoor specialist at work (making breads in a spotless white dress shirt!), and you can see some of the commitment to hard work that the demi-god Atlas must have had as he accepted his punishment of supporting the weight of the Earth on his shoulders. Feel inspired to go forth into the world with similar integrity. *This is a small metal tool in the shape of a hemisphere on a stick, which seems to operate along the lines of an ice cream scoop.

He noticed the crowd and took it as a good sign, and believe me it is. Gem! It's no frills, no neon, just a simple small Middle Eastern delight serving authentic snacks. I hopped straight back on a bus to the short trip to my house and enjoyed my falafel at home, and it was indeed good. Hot, fresh and made with great ingredients, including oven fresh bread... Between this and Falafel I'm now spoiled for choice for my favourite lunch dependent upon which end of the Curry Mile I'm at. Atlas is closer to my house, Falafel nearer Oxford Road. This location seems to be rather poor for pedestrian access, I do think it is more designed for its drive-thru, due to having to dodge cars to get inside. This was also made worse by the lack of a seating area, the majority of the seats and tables were blocked off for a staff-only area, which wasn't even being used! This meant that the customers inside the building were packed into a tight area, with very limited tables, I totally understand reserving one or two tables for staff members, but reserving the largest seating area, leaving very little space for paying customers makes no sense. I did find service to be pretty slow, I selected the Table Service option and my food took well over ten minutes to arrive. They had also forgotten straws/cutterly with my order, which meant I had to go back to the counter, defeating the point of offering table service in the first place. My food wasn't even that warm, which considering they make the burgers fresh to order due to my allergy (I am unable to eat gluten, so had to order without a bun), was all the more strange. That includes a side of fries. I noticed every restaurant that you walk In the host will ask you about any allergies or intolerances. If you let them know you're they will let you know what to avoid. Or if they do not know they will send you a manager who knows. There must have been a huge problem with allergies and it is a great way to avoid it. So I ordered the chicken burger with a breaded fried chicken breast some black pepper mayo sauce some salad, Onions, and a slap of avocado. WOW - the nicely tasting breaded chicken was fried to perfection and it was a really big piece without drying out. Good job! the "burner" was definitely the combination of chicken and that avocado spread mixed in With the black Peppercorn mayonnaise - an almost perfect bite. The bun was not too big to get in the way of tasting what's important all other ingredients have been fresh and am tasty the fries also fried to a crisp state without being burned. Hands down a surprisingly great burger. Oh, I will be back - the service was five starts as well quick, knowledgeable, and friendly!
