I'm always down for fried fish - makes me feel like I'm on vacation. Today, we stopped into this little locally-owned diner in Columbus. The diner has a long history. Owner Marlin Brown will proudly tell you that the restaurant has won best fish and best tenderloin in town awards. We were greeted and treated like royalty during our visit. We ordered at the counter and our food was delivered quickly. Marlin and another clerk checked on us several times and cajoled with us during our meal. It is no wonder the restaurant fills with guests so quickly. The dining room is not fancy or trendy, but super clean and cozy. Humorous fish and local sporting pictures hang on the wall. I had the fried fish meal. The fish is wild-caught Alaskan whitefish. The fish portion was generous (I chose not to have the sandwich). The fish was lightly battered and flakey. The creamy coleslaw was very good. And I loved that they carried unsweetened ice tea (but I could have used some fresh lemon). My husband had the daily special of ham and bean soup, fried potatoes and a beautiful corn muffin. Portions are generous. Marlin shook our hands when we left and invited us back. So fun! Parking is a little chaotic, but it's worth it. The menu is straightforward and the fish sandwiches are huge. No frills, just awesome fish. I had the green beans. If you miss high school, these green beans will transport you back in time. Not a fan of the styrofoam plates, though. This place just feels like home. Overall, just not great food. You get a lot of food for the money but was very much like the fried fish you would find at a buffet or something. Just not very fresh. Saw it under a heat lamp when they made it for me. Tartar sauce was good however. Just couldn't finish eating based off the not great fish. However, what the food lacked the workers were great! It has sooo much potential. I really hate leaving a "bad" review on a small business. The pros: the tenderloin was moist, cooked well, had a nice bun, good toppings, good ratio of breading/meat, etc. The employees were super sweet as well. The cons: no seasoning. Or no seasoning could be tasted. It genuinely didn't even like there was even salt! The fried potatoes also seemed like they had no flavor besides plain potatoes that were sautéed. I'm not sure if this is a one off or if they are consistently flavorless. I will give them another chance, but I'm really hopeful that they add some seasoning/flavor. I truly think they could be a 10 out of 10 if they added seasoning but without it, it is simply far far far too bland. read more

My partner has lived here for years and decided to have me try this cute little place in town. I tried it and quickly noticed what i do and do not like. Everything was cooked well, but what I don't like is when restaurants don't add simple seasonings like salt or pepper. Or they don't add enough to where you can actually taste it. Having a big fish sandwich with 4 pieces of fish in it is great, but not if I can't taste anything. I understand that this is a historic staple for everyone in Columbus, but this is personally not my type of style. As you walk in the door, look right and grab a tray, some napkins and plastic silverware, and take a look down the line at the cold sides and desserts to see if anything strikes your fancy. Then move your tray down to the other side, where you can see the fried fish, tenderloins, and cafeteria-style hot sides. There's a menu board immediately overhead. I always get the FISH PLATTER, which is delicately fried mild catfish piled high on a plate. The green beans, mac and cheese, and potatoes are usually available as hot sides, and are good choices. The TENDERLOINS are huge. The dining area is like a trip back in time, and includes an interesting old promotional map of Columbus from the 80s that I am completely jealous of. They don't oversalt their food here, but there are salt and pepper shakers on the table for you to get your spice on if you wish. The menu is simple, your meal is either fish or tenderloin and they slap a portion of fisher larger than described. My wife and I where saddened when Clarksville seafood restaurant closed but now we have found a great substitute and this is the place!!! Great fish sandwich's at a great price and sides are plentiful too !! We talked to the owner who said it's been in business since 1932 !!! First bite into the tenderloin and I just wanted to spit the food out and run away. There was absolutely no flavor to it! Complete disappointment. Everything just tasted awful. I was hungry and just had to wait for my colleague who recommended this place to finish his food. I tried everything to make my food edible.. We have been patrons for years under several different owners...and the new owners, Marlin and Denise, are the best! The review below does a great job of describing the place, so I won't redo it here. However, the fish is not catfish as described below. It is a premium whitefish that is mild and flaky. They hand bread, make their own mustard which is special and great on the fish, and will dress your sandwich as requested. The Columbus fish sandwich is an institution...piled so high that your mouth won't open wide enough! Over the decades, Columbus has sported these type sandwiches with various restaurants such as Horn's, Lois's, Carmichael's, etc. These type sandwiches made Columbus famous.
