I first discovered the studio by signing up for a class, and from the very beginning it felt special. When I initially came in to sign up, the studio itself was very open and active, which felt a little overwhelming at first. But almost immediately, a few members greeted me, gave me a tour, and made me feel genuinely welcome. That sense of warmth and community stood out right away. The class format worked perfectly with my schedule as well -- I work during the day, and the afternoon class times made it easy to commit and stay consistent. The talent in this studio is incredible. The members are skilled, generous, and always happy to offer advice, tips, or encouragement as you build your pottery and ceramics skills. It's an environment where learning feels natural and supported. On top of that, the sense of community goes far beyond the wheel -- members regularly bring in homemade baked goods, and some even organize potlucks and gatherings outside of the studio. It truly feels like a creative home, not just a place to take classes. During my time as a member, I experienced some personal hardships and had to travel due to the loss of a family member. I wasn't able to come into the studio for weeks at a time and eventually considered canceling my membership. When I came in to talk with the owner, Deric, I was prepared to take a break. Before I even mentioned canceling, he kindly offered to hold my membership while I was away. That level of understanding and compassion honestly made all the difference and is a big reason I stayed.

The class is 2 hours long & you get a teacher, ours was Violet, & a model, ours was Franco. They bring easels, paper, charcoal pencils. I stopped in on a whim one Saturday, just planning to "browse." (Famous last words.) What I found instead was a cozy, vibrant gallery bursting with the kind of talent that can only come from locals who live and breathe the desert--every piece seemed to carry a little grit, a little magic, and a whole lot of soul. Their rotating exhibits mean no two visits are the same. One month, you might find expressive oils of stormy Joshua Trees; the next, serene watercolors of coyotes under a star-filled sky. The current show featured a mix of pottery, paintings (from abstract to impressionistic), and sculpture, and I left with a renewed appreciation for how diverse and talented our local art scene really is. But here's where things got dangerous: The gift shop. If you're someone who likes mass-produced kitsch, keep moving. It was a time our life was disrupted and things were very hard for my son. He loves art and we tried 29PCC in hopes it would bring him joy and it brought us so much more. We are now living much farther away but make the 1.5 hr trip back for art class when we can. Just last night my son said, "Mommy, I miss Ms. Gretchen!" And I figured it was time to leave a review! Ms. Gretchen has a beautiful way of letting him be him, fully. My son is level 1 autistic, plus very shy at times because of lack of socialization due to a rare disease that keeps him in the house a lot. But when with Ms. Gretchen, none of behaviors are challenging, none of his behaviors need to be adapted - she is so loving and accepting in a way that allows him to feel cared for amd safe. To love and care from a distance in the way that she does is such a strong quiet power and we are grateful to know and to have the opportunity to continue returning to 29 Palms Creative Center. We just went this weekend while in town and there are two more dates coming up on Dec 13 and 20 from 11am to 5pm. The event was fantastic! At the event, they have photos with Santa, gingerbread cookie decorating, gingerbread ornament decorating, face painting, a bubble station, a hot cocoa station, and live music. All the volunteers were kind and welcoming. The ambiance is festive and fun! It was quite busy when they first opened with all the little ones trying to get a picture with Santa before their nap time. It was less crowded by 1pm. Would recommend stopping by if you're around!
