My fiancee and I wanted something new to do so we went to Paint Nite at Coral Tree Cafe in Encino. We arrived early so parking was easy peasy. We were immediately greeted by our instructor Michael Falk. He's a very warm and personable military veteran. He was a big part of what made Paint Nite so fun! He kept things lively by cracking lots of jokes, made toasts throughout the night while wearing his kilt, and took his time to come to every painter to make sure everyone was having a good time. We painted "Galaxy At Pine Lake". As much as I love art, I can't do it if my life depended on it! Thankfully the painting was broken down into more-or-less easy parts to work on at a time so that by the end everything comes together. My painting still came out no better than a 10 year old's but I had a lot of fun! Paint Nite's so much fun and is definitely worth checking out if you're on a date, out with friends, celebrating your birthday, or just want something different to try. Everything's provided for you (paint, brushes, canvas, water, apron, paper towel) so all you need to bring is a positive attitude! I have attended two pain nights first one amazing and second one not so much. First time it was a small group and the teacher went slow to our pace and would talk around and ask how we were doing and would show us close up. Second time around it was far but I chose that night for the painting we would do. So I didn't mind. But this time around it was a hug group. We got there 10 min late so we got the worst seats. Witch I understand was our fault. But the teacher would go super fast and wouldn't come around to explain and Didn't have communication with us about how we were doing or if we needed help. I wouldn't mind giving it one more try because my first time was amazing but I definitely didn't like the last experience I had. The teacher was so out of touch with his students. read more

My friend took me here to this event as birthday gift and I had an awesome time. She bought the deal on Travelzoo for $25 and then got tickets for The Colonial Wine Bar event on a Sunday where we painted birch trees. Our instructor, Shelly Lang, was great. She went step by step and showed us how to mix the primary paint colors to create different colors and shades and which brushes to use for different textures. I can only draw stick figures, but after the class, I was pretty proud of my painting. Happy drinking and painting! read more

I echo many of the sentiments Sara S. expressed in her review. A friend of mine went to a Paint Nite event at Pita Jungle in Newport Beach. It was our very first experience so we didn't really know what to expect. First of all, I thought that at least one drink would be covered by the fee we paid since it was a bit pricey, but you have to pay for the drinks. I just assumed that because the whole idea of "paint and sip" is to drink while painting, a complimentary drink would be included. Secondly, our instructor, like Sara S.'s, was also not very good at instructing us on what to do. For example, the first thing she told us what to paint the canvas yellow 3/4 of the way down. But she didn't mention that you had to leave an area in the middle open/white, so a lot of people ended up painting the whole area yellow. With each subsequent step it was like this. I wish she went over certain techniques on how to use your brush to get certain effects, like for the leaves on trees we were painting. I feel that if she had provided more instruction with regard to brush techniques and explained each step better, our paintings could have turned out better. I'm not blaming the instructor for my bad painting (haha), but the experience itself would have been more enjoyable had she been better at her job. She was a very nice lady, but unfortunately not very good. We were only given two brushes, large and medium. I feel like a smaller/finer brush would have been useful for the painting we did, but it was not provided. Throughout the instruction a lot of people sitting further back were getting very frustrated because they couldn't hear what the instructor was saying even though she was mic'd. Maybe this was more of an issue because we were seated outdoors. Overall, I'd say I was pretty disappointed with my Paint Nite experience. I think I will try Pinot's Palette next time. read more

This was so much fun ! They provide a large canvas and all necessary materials, give you step-by-step instructions. You can incorporate your own style though; it was really neat seeing all the different variations at the end of class. Our instructor was very friendly and sweet. Wonderful experience. Everyone should try it out at least once. It can be done for girls night out, date night, or if you're an artistic person that wants to try something new, this should definitely be an option. We went to the Paint Nite @ Bucca de Beppo in Pasadena. The price is $45 but if it's your first time then you should be able to get a discount on the website. I got a 35% discount and paid $30. Drinks are bought separately. The artist was really nice and funny (She went a little too fast but maybe it's because I suck at painting). I would suggest sitting closer to the artist and taking your own brushes because the smaller brush we got wasn't that great but if you don't mind, they provide everything needed. read more

I was so excited to go to Paint Nite. I even bought a couple for my friends thru Groupon. As it turns out there was a glitch in Paint Nite's website and we were never registered for the event even though I had print outs that said we were registered! Christian Elder was so rude to us he said that we did not know how to use the website and it was our fault. His attitude was terrible. I would never do another Paint Nite even if it was free. After seeing the mass lesson for painting that was on a kindergarten level I would rather go to someone who actually knows how to paint and furthermore knows how to treat customers! read more

I did Paint Nite at Far Niemte Ristorante in Glendale with a fun girl. Honestly, it couldn't have been better (except for the appetizers served, which were just alright, but I don't relate food to the Paint Nite experience.) The instructor couldn't have been better. She was supportive of goofs like us who did something abstract, and even more supportive of those who were really trying. Tip: Check Groupon before buying full price tickets. The deal I got was 2 for $50. Money well spent. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that it's the coolest, most casual, and most affordable thing you can do in LA. See y'all at the next one! read more

What a SUPER Fun way to do Girl's Night Out!! I bought a Groupon for myself and a friend so we could try this out, and we were not disappointed in the least... We chose an "easy" Paint Event in Woodland Hills, and were pleased when we arrived 45min early and saw the room already set-up (even though we chose to go to the bar and grab food real quick first). Everything you need is there; paints, brushes, canvas and a smock. Neither my friend or myself have any visual artistic talent, so we went in with the attitude of "let's just have fun" and our instructor Heidi did a GREAT job of helping enhance that mood/attitude. The instruction was clear, concise, and easy to follow. Even better it was not nearly as "strict" as we expected - we both made our own versions of the "masterpiece" and were giddy at the fact it was unique and did not turn out nearly as bad as either of us expected. Overall this is a really enjoyable way to spend an evening, and we intend on going again in the future...I highly recommend getting a Groupon or Living Social deal when you see them, as the $45 standard price seems a bit high for me, but regardless you are bound to enjoy! read more

My friend suckered me into doing a Paint Nite with her at Onotria in Costa Mesa recently after finding a Groupon and I agreed. All the stars here go to the instructors. They started a little late, but they apologized for it and ran the event very smoothly. They were helpful and delightfully encouraging despite my artistic inabilities. A lot of people have fun at these events and some people even come here on dates and paint with their partner. They give you free reign to pretty much paint what you want - everything they teach is basically a suggestion. They'll also take your pictures and put them up on the Facebook site as well. They'll play some music and keep the energy level up for you while you paint. Just a clear warning, if you're at all like me and have no artistic ability - even WITH alcohol, I got a little bored halfway through the event and gave up my painting. The day after our event, we got offered 30% off coupons and for me at least, I don't really have an interest in doing one of these again just because it doesn't fit my attention span. However, that's not to say that this wasn't a wonderfully executed and hosted event and anyone else who is interested in it should definitely check it out. read more

Wow that was super fun! I did my 1st paint nite a few days ago with a Groupon and loved it. I love to craft and do any type of art, but have very little actual "artistic talent". Luckily it isn't really needed, because the instruction and assistance from Bethany was great. I'll break it all down for you. It was at Vino Wine and Tapas Room in Encino, in a cute back area behind the kitchen, 7-9pm. I went by myself, and not knowing what to expect or do for the first time, it would have been nice to be greeted and given some instruction; 1/2 star gone for that...but I looked for a spot, and saw people getting paint, so I did the same. I sat at my spot and ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio and an appetizer (both yummy!) then waited for instruction. Everyone else that came was paired up with a buddy or significant other, but I was fine by myself too. Bethany is very sweet charismatic gal, I liked her as an instructor. There were, however, a couple hiccups within the night..someone spilled a bit of paint on the carpet, so we had to wait about 10 min for the next instruction while that was being dealt with. Not a big deal, accidents happen... but maybe some paper lining the floors/seating if its too nice to get paint on..? We ARE all drinking after all... ;) The second mishap was 2 girls calling from traffic on the 405 (duh..!) about 20 min into the class, asking if they can still do it. She said yes, so they arrived 20 min after that (40 min into the class). We had to wait another 10-15 min for her to catch them up to where we were...so there goes the other 1/2 of a star. It was supposed to be done at 9pm, which was perfect for me on a Thursday evening. But with all the setbacks I finally had to leave at 9:20. I finished my painting, but everyone else was still finishing up. All of that being said, I still had a great time, I'm so impressed with myself and my work, and I will definitely do it again. read more

Disappointing experience at paint night. I have been to many of these events with this company (as well as other companies) so I know what to expect. I usually enjoy these events and find them very relaxing, however last night's Paintnite was anything but. My primary complaint is that the instructor (Ryan) was very bad at teaching/leading/guiding and most of all, explaining the steps necessary to mimic the sample painting. I looked online and saw that this was only his 3rd or 4th time leading a class, so perhaps he is still learning how to teach others. I would strongly recommend only allowing him to teach the most basic "easy" paintings and leave the more intricate works for instructors who have more experience TEACHING. He was polite and I don't want to say anything bad about him, but I felt a bit "ripped off" given the fact that he couldn't break down the steps for me when I asked. I was looking for very simple clear instructions such as: make a line from point A (halfway down the canvas) to point B (3 quarters from the bottom) etc. The painting had a lot of straight lines and the basics of it were not that difficult. I think any non-artist could have explained it easily if they were given the breakdown. I was not alone in feeling very lost during last night's lesson. The entire room was confused and just guessing their way through it as the demonstration was very limited. I have never been the person that requires special explanation and have always been able to follow the instructors with great ease. This instructor seemed a little too caught up in making his own painting and not really explaining how he was doing it. Again, I attribute this to his new-ness at teaching others. When I asked him to point out where I should make my next line (the frame for which the main focal point will rely on) he seemed really lost and couldn't explain anything clearly. He got frustrated and just walked away! I was pretty shocked. I hadn't butchered it and I was still in a fairly early stage of starting the main structure. I can understand if someone makes a huge mess of things and it's hard to recover, but when I'm asking in the early stages of the painting there is no reason for him to be frustrated. I literally had to resort to pulling out my phone and bringing up the painting on the website so I could try to guide myself through it since he was unable to help or guide me. I could have went to the craft store and done that from home. No need to purchase a Paintnite class if I'm on my own teaching myself. Waste of money. Tried to find the photos on Facebook and they are not uploaded. If you recover the photos you will see everyone's paintings and my points will be made for me. A few other things I would like to mention: 1. We were only given 2 brushes, large and medium. This painting requires lots of fine lines and usually the classes provide a fine brush as well. Very shocking we didn't get a fine brush for this particular painting which clearly required one. 2. The painting was different from the sample. The sample had yellow in the background and he skipped right over that and never demonstrated it. A few other minor things also were changed, but nothing to worry over. 3. The artists asked for tips because "we're artists," insinuating they were on an artist's budget, but this company claims to pay them "an adequate split in ticket prices." If they were being paid enough for the work they do, surely they wouldn't need to ask for tips. 4. Time allocation. We spent way too much time coloring the background and didn't have enough time for the main object/foreground. Artist also spent way too much time on his painting during this portion of the lesson. tldr Summary: Instructor gave limited instructions and couldn't instruct me so I had to look up the painting online and self-teach during this class. Never attended a class with someone who couldn't teach before and I have done this many times. read more

The instructor and assistant were awesome; they knew how to handle everyone's skill level. Pretty cool night out! Went to one hosted at the Burbank Umami Burger through a Living Social deal where we painted an owl. The instructor was pretty cool and really helped make it a fun night. You don't need to be a good artist or even really all that into painting, they show you the basics of what to do and keep it pretty low key and social.
