A great casual spot. They serve cajun/creole dishes that are prepared all day. The menu rotates so they might not have the same choices when you go in. The Chili Cheese Etouffe is the most popular dish. They have Vegetarian options everyday. All dishes are server with rice and delicious bread! The staff there is wonderful! Especially Gabe. Don't know what you want? No problem, they'll let you taste every single thing on the menu if you want. They have a trivia game on Thursday night that is free. A very fun and low key cheap date. It seems like people either love or hate Yats. Maybe it is a texture thing. True--it is just rice covered in slop but for me, food doesn't get much better than this! I never broadcast my vegetarianism, but will say that one thing I love about Yats is the fact that they have plenty of delicious options for non-meat eaters. I was having lunch today with a group of old friends from high school. One works at the Republic and another at Cummins. Despite the below-freezing temps, we were all able to walk there from our offices. That feels nice, right? After waiting in line for 5-ish minutes, I was greeted by a very cheerful person and ordered a B&B (black beans and caramelized corn over rice) and a Zwanzigz Honey Wheat beer. The food came out quickly, the beer was perfectly chilled, and the owner came to our table to be sure that we were all satisfied with our food. We were! I like my food to be spicy and there was no shortage of hot sauces to choose from. Bonus. We were there for more than an hour and I noticed that the line was never shorter than 5 people, which I interpret as a sign that the food is worth waiting for. I guess that also means that a lot of people got their food to go because there were always a few tables available. Went here for the first time today and I definitely plan to go back. The daily menu is written up on the board (love the fact that it rotates and changes). The price was extremely affordable. We stopped in at the Yats for dinner on 4th Street Saturday night before seeing a movie. We were so pleased with the speedy and friendly service. The food is amazing especially for the price. The outdoor dining is comfortable and clean. This is a great place to gather with friends since the beer on tap is really good and I should mention that the beer dispenser is pretty cool. Weird but cool. Sure beats $10 popcorn and $5 soda at the movie! read more

I love this place. It's not fancy and don't expect table service, but it's worth it. The food is amazing. Always order the half and half, it's like getting two fantastic meals in one! The beer selection is really nice and they rotate the taps which is also a bonus. They've got something for everyone (well, you need to like spicy food), but they've got vegetarian and seafood options as well as chicken and pork. Place is overrated and overpriced. The food is OK at best but seems to be just "warm" when you get it. They try to give you the image of more food by spreading it over a larger plate but it is maybe a half inch deep so you are lucky to get a bowl. Here is the kicker.....their pricing is a joke and an insult to their customers and for that I will never return nor recommend Yats. You can get a plate of whatever you want for I think $6....now if you want so get a half and half plate of whatever you want they are more than happy to accommodate. However, I think the price for that is $7.25. Now how does that make any sense??? The plates are the same size so you are not getting any more food, I can get the plate with any one of the single selections I want for a cheaper price....but o my if I ask them to pick up a different ladle (yes this is all premade in the back in pots....they just scoop out to order) for a different scoop they charge me more. This is just taking advantage of their customer and greed. NO THANK YOU YATS! And also....I could care less about the bottom feed tap system. Those cups have to be expensive for that gimmick magnet in the bottom and they are 100% disposable. I'd rather just have cheaper beer. read more

This restaurant is very good at what it does, which is Cajun food that is fast and tasty. The people are nice and they have good beers on tap if you're stopping by after work for a bite. You can get plenty of food and a drink for less than $10. Can't beat it. read more

Not quite sure what this place is trying to be. Is it a lunch place? If so, weird that you have to walk past the full bar to order. I don't think the food choices and the walk-up service make it a great evening place. The bottom-fill cups are cool...until you figure out you are drinking beer from a plastic cup. That was fun in college. I think just ignore the bar and grab lunch--lots of rice, though; so not for Atkins fans! read more

Let me just start by saying that the food tastes absolutely delicious. However, they could work on their presentation a bit. The last time I went to Yats, my rice was slightly overcooked and the bottom of my styrofoam plate (they use styrofoam plates that have a shallow bowl-like bottom) was filled with water from the rice. I'm not going to lie - as delicious as the food is, it is horribly ugly. Perhaps a garnish of some green herb or something would make one feel a little better about eating food so unappealing. I also really don't care for the styrofoam plates and plastic cups. What a waste. And this is a minor issue, but it really bothers me that the nozzles of the hot sauce bottles always have dried, old hot sauce on them. They are at a bar and you are free to get them and use them as you please, but I never do because the caps and nozzles of the bottles are always disgusting. All it would take is a hot, damp rag a few times a day to keep them clean. read more

Yats gives you well made staple Cajun and Creole dishes for a great price, and with good sized portions. You will not leave hungry! Dishes such as the Spinach and Mushroom Étouffée, and the Maque Choux are old stand-bye favorites. They also have a rotation of eclectic "fusion" menu items such as the Chicken Curry to keep things fresh and exciting. I see why everyone brags about the chili cheese étouffée with crawfish! I got a half/half order (1/2 order of 2 menu items) with that plus the chorizo étouffée and both were fantastic. The bread was awesome (I got extra bread and was so glad I did), too. read more

I'm not one to leave reviews normally, however, after this experience, I felt compelled to share. My visit was on a Thursday late afternoon. There were two staff members working. The older lady at the register was less than pleasant when taking my order and answering my questions. I did get my food quickly, which was nice, however, the cook in back was not wearing gloves when handling my food. When I got my food, I could tell the bread was old and had been sitting for a while. During my meal, I could hear the two arguing in the back, which made for an uncomfortable experience. The table I sat at was dirty and the restaurant looked severely unkept. First Time to visit this restaurant. I had heard rave reviews, but had yet to try it for myself. I went right when they opened. I was the first patron of the day. I explained I had not been there before, and the staff was kind enough to give me a thorough review of the menu and options. I went with a half and half-- drunken chicken and chirozzo and chicken. Both were excellent. The bread was very nice as well. The portion size was beyond what I was expecting. I could not eat the entire thing. My only concern, and not really a concern, is that since I ordered my meal to go, some of the sauce made it ways out of the box. This meal will soon become one of my favorites. I am not a big chirizzo fan but I very much enjoyed the meat combinations. The rice was not sticky or old, it was fresh, and tasted good on its own even without the meat. Will definitely eat there again. Nice size portions for the price--- and the price already has the tax computed into it.... way to go the extra mile on that. read more

This place took me back to childhood summers spent on the Louisiana bayou! The fare is all Cajun and Creole, and it's pretty authentic! I had red beans with smoked sausage, and it was delicious! My hubby had the drunken chicken and said that was pretty good too! We were told they often sell out of gumbo, so I'm anxious to try it if I can! If you go just know you order first and sit then grab your seat, no table service, but that's a small price to pay! read more

Was in town for a couple days and tried this place for lunch. Staff was rude. I ordered jambalaya and it was advertised to have sausage in it. Basically I received a box with rice that was way too spicy to eat and had 4 small slices of sausage in it. The bread is about a 3 inch slice that you can literally eat in two bites. Place has a nice atmosphere but the food left little desire to return often. The chicken dish I had had little to no taste. I tried to spice it up a bit but then it just tasted like the hot sauce.
