For the past two years we had Yatai Sushi cater our event. Having an actual sushi chef at your party makes your party even cooler and unique. It was easy coordinating the with Todd, the Owner. He responded super fast to my inquiries. We had two different sushi chefs each time but both were really friendly and cool. They were on time and came prepared. You just need to provide them a space and maybe access to a sink. I love how I didn't need to worry about them. The minimum amount for a party is 40 people~ They'll stay for 2 hours or until they run out. In regard to the sushi, they quality of fish is great. They make: hamachi, ebi, salmon, maguro nigiris to name a couple. Then they also make California and spicy ahi(?) handrolls. If you're having a pupu event, the sushi plus a couple sides is enough~ If you want your party to stand out, cater with Yatai Sushi! read more

I originally planned to go with another mobile sushi company but they didnt answer my email inquiry. So I booked yatai for a party of 75. They came early, set up and was ready to go. There was only a small plate of leftover sushi and no tempura...mind you, i catered 5 other main entrees, pupus, etc. Everyone not surprisingly, enjoyed the sushi/tempura more than the other food. Just had a party and called several companies. The last one that we contacted was not available and they recommended Yatai Sushi. They did a really nice job. Came on time, quick set up, great quality fish and tasty Sushi rice. They were very reasonable priced, half of my original quote. I fried up some spam and the sushi Chef kindly added that to the menu option. Really nice that he even made Chirashi bowls for some of my guests. Nice touch! Yatai Sushi practically outshone the venue's fine dining dishes! Yatai arrived right on time to setup their awesome sushi booths. Sushi was delicious and top grade, but unfortunately the Brandon guy was pretty cold and hard to talk to. The minimal eye contact, annoyed terse replies, and zero smiles in the 90 minutes definitely negatively affected the atmosphere especially since we hired him for a very small dinner in our kitchen with some other family members. I cringed when I heard my mom trying to talk him up and ask him about himself. She was only trying to fill the weirdly tense void as he made rolls but ended up having to just kind of awkwardly stand there when he stopped replying to her. Brandon also came late meaning he also got set up late and wasn't apologetic at all. He came in jeans and didn't have the set-up like I see in other people's Yelp pics so I was a little let down because they looked really cool and we saved up a lot to afford this night. Anyway, I don't know if that guy had a bad day or something, but the undeniably negative attitude also made enjoying sushi (and even holding conversations with each other) that night very difficult. Sorry to say, but as someone who values customer service and expects at least cordial-level people skills (especially when big bucks like this are shelled out) I would definitely not recommend. I was lucky enough to get thrown a surprise birthday party this past weekend and my husband is so thoughtful and awesome that he hired Yatai Sushi to cater the event. It was amazing! Our sushi chef was great and a trooper because it was an outdoor party and the day was super hot! But he was very funny, explained what all his ingredients were, and just an all around stand up guy! The fish and shrimp was super fresh, I especially loved the ahi and salmon, two of my favorites, put together with just a touch of wasabi, crab meat and ikura. Everybody also enjoyed the spicy poke. My family are big sushi, nigiri eaters so they couldn't get enough of it. His setup was great, it reminded me of almost being at a restaurant and it was like the sushi was endless! What was even more cool was that he ended up giving us all the leftovers, but he prepared chirashi bowls with the extras, and I absolutely LOVE these little bowls of fishy goodness! My husband earned major points with having this vendor, and we can't wait to hire Yatai to join us at another special occasion. Who knows, we may not even need a reason to hire them! read more

Had a party this Saturday and the guys did a great job. We ordered the sushi and the tempura combo. The tempura was delicious -- fresh, hot and crispy. Sushi was decent (we're sushi snobs). Rice could have used a little more vinegar and sugar. Fish was pretty fresh and tasted good. Set up was pretty cute. The guys were on time and cleaned up after themselves. The price was reasonable. About $30 per person once you add in the extra charges for travel, tax (and added on selections) and 20% tip. If we had just ordered the sushi without the extra sushi selections it would have been about half the price. Main pros: * economical * reliable * decent sushi, excellent tempura * nice guys Couple of negatives: * sushi line started to build up so maybe they should make the little nigiri rice balls ahead of time. * we added on unagi, tamago and uni and for the amount charged, seems like a bad deal for the amount that they brought for those add ons. read more

Was referred to Yatai Sushi by a friend of mines that uses Yatai Sushi every year for his annual christimas party. I called and emailed and Todd responded within a day or so. I had questions a couple weeks prior to our even, emailed him and he got back with an answer right away! The day of our event our Sushi Chef came on time, set up his workstation and was ready to go on right before we were ready to start. We were super impressed of how quickly he made the sushi. The Sushi was fresh and was very tasty! Perfect with our crab boil that we also had at our party. Sushi ran out becuase it tasted so good! Hosted a birthday dinner at family home and Todd sent a great sushi chef who providing melt in the mouth hand rolled nigiri and hand rolls. Price ($10 per person, but basically $15 at after fees) was reasonable for the freshness and professionalism of our sushi chef. Inquire about the extra fees so not too surprised when the bill arrives such as the gas fee to get supplies to your home, inclusive tip and any others. We had Yatai do their thing at our youngest son's UH grad party. They arrived an hour ahead of their schedule start time in order to set-up their little booth and slice all of the fish. They provide Everything - even small paper plates. Fish selections are laid out attractively and encourage people to experiment with combinations that they've never had the chance to try at a regular sushi bar. Our server, Brandon, was super fast (but didn't don the hachimaki that I see in the other pictures). Of course, our guests were all running late so by the time everyone was finally there - it was time for Brandon to leave...! But he makes up chirashi bowls using all of the leftover fish - and they were so ono! The hamachi was the sweetest I've ever had - anywhere! And everything was fresh. Yatai Sushi is awesome! I hired them to cater a small (25 people) party at my home. The sushi chef arrived early and set up a professional sushi cart on my back lanai and donned a yukata, Before the party started he even asked if we were expecting children at the party (we were) and offered to add spam sushi to the menu if we had a can of spam handy. He added his own sauce and it was a hit with the kids. The sushi rolls he made were fresh and delicious... towards the end he started making "super rolls" as we called them- delicious off the menu concoctions of the ingredients he brought. During times when there was no line, he made lots of sushi so no one would have to wait when they came up! The chef was friendly and awesome. Worth every penny. My husband and his friends can be "sushi snobs" and they were raving about Yatai! Can't wait to have an occasion to hire them again. :) read more

We had a small gathering of not more than 20 people and the quantity of toppings would never have provided the minimum number that was ordered. The sushi chef Todd M. was pretty nice while we went through the first go round. My boss ordered 2 spicy ahi cones which looked pretty good and he added cucumber and fish eggs! She raved about it, "These are yummy!" She went back a second time maybe an hour later and requested the same thing but this time he just provided one roll with no trimmings even when she asked. I even spoke up for her thinking he didn't hear her but to no avail. There were lots of ingredients remaining so I couldn't understand why he did that and she hadn't gone up but that one time. I was next in line and he was nice to me because I was the host who paid for the event. HOW RUDE!!! The other people were shocked and appalled at his unprofessional behavior! I definitely won't be using Yatai Sushi again! It was soooooooooooooo disappointing as I had been at another party which gave me the idea for our party. More going away parties are coming up and we're all telling people we know not to order from Yatai Sushi for sure. read more
