Yard Bar is pawsitively awesome!
It's pretty much everything you could want in a local business. You can bring your dogs and they get to play with other dogs! Austin loves dogs. There's a nice beer, wine, and cocktail selection to make doggie play time more enjoyable for people! Austin loves to drink. You can even eat food! Austin loves food. What's not to like?
A day pass is $5 and it really is an all day pass. There's not a time limit. A monthly pass is $15 - if you plan on going more than three times in a month, it pays for itself and seems totally worth it. They also have other options, too, like an annual membership, which includes unlimited visits and discounts on food, drinks, and events.
There are a few rules, but they are all clearly listed on their website and they go over them with you if it's your first time. Just make sure your dog is wearing a flat collar - no harnesses or choke or prong collars - with ID tags with your dog's name. Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and bring a leash, pay attention to your pup, pick up his or her poop, and you're all set!
The park itself is great. There's tons of space for the dogs to run around and they even have some agility course stuff set up, if your dog is into that and can do it even with all the distractions. My dog loves the thick cedar mulch because he LOVES to chew on sticks. As much as he loves playing with puppy friends, he loves chewing sticks into tiny pieces way more and that is usually what you'll find him doing. Fine by me, because it keeps him out of trouble - not that he ever gets into any trouble here.
Speaking of trouble, the only thing I wish was done a little differently was how the Bark Rangers interact with the dogs while playing. Some dogs are very vocal, but not all barking is angry barking. Some of the Bark Rangers don't seem to fully understand dog behavior and what good playing versus bad playing looks like. On the other hand, some owners don't seem to know the difference either, so maybe the Bark Rangers do it that way because of bad dog owners? I wish dogs wouldn't be separated when they are just roughhousing, but I can understand why they do it. My dog is too boring to get involved with any of that, but I feel sad for the other pups when they just get so excited and really into it and then they're made to stop. It feels like we should all reinforce good playing and when dogs are separated when playing well, that teaches them that what they were doing is not okay. Not quite what I want to see reinforced, but oh, well. Again, I imagine they probably do this because they don't want trouble to start or they just don't want to deal with dog owners who don't know the difference.
Speaking of dog owners, if your dog is clearly miserable, take them home. Both times I have been, I've seen people bring in their dogs and those dogs are terrified. Tail between the legs, slumped posture, slightly aggressive when approached kind of terrified. To be clear, I don't think the dogs are bad dogs, but the dogs are clearly stressed by the environment and not enjoying themselves and anyone who knows anything about dogs can see that in their body language. What's worse is that the dog owners just kind of ignore the dog and that doesn't help anything. It's okay if your dog doesn't like it! Just take him or her home where they'll be more comfortable!
Also, if your dog poops, PLEASE pick it up. No excuses! I understand if your dog goes off in some corner and does the deed and you miss it, even though you are supposed to be watching your dog, but if your dog poops right in front of you and you don't pick it up, you're a lazy butt. I watched some woman's dog poop FOUR TIMES and she only picked up one! Even though all the poops were in a nice little circle! So lazy. Don't be that woman.
Other than that, I love what they've done with the space and I love getting to hang out with other cool people and dogs. I can't even begin to tell y'all how many dogs I've played fetch with since going to Yard Bar. I also can't begin to explain how many times I've thrown something only to watch the dog get distracted by the ever-roaming pack of pups. It's hilarious.
I think sometimes there is music playing, but it wasn't playing on my last couple of visits. I hope they bring that back. And those bathroom doors - Adorable!
So far, I love Yard Bar and I think it is a great addition to Austin. I love it, my boyfriend loves it, and, most importantly, my pup loves it, even if all he does is chase balls and chew up sticks and occasionally play with a puppy friend. If you're a beer-drinkin', dog-ownin', fun time-havin' resident of Austin, you'll probably love Yard Bar, too. I promise to make sure Graham leaves some good sticks for all the other stick-lovin' dog friends in Austin. read more
