Short answer: No. Dr. Hughes was very brusque in his manner and not very considerate or caring. My primary concern at the time was allergies (grass season, yay!). I told him that my work requires me to be outside, so I needed to find ways to deal with grass. Despite me JUST telling him I had to be outside, his first piece of advice was to "avoid the allergens". What, quit my job? His second piece of advice was to move out of the Willamette Valley, so he probably did mean to quit my job. He also gave me information regarding weight loss that was incredibly insensitive as well as plain wrong. I was about 15 pounds overweight, and struggling with counting calories. Dr. Hughes told me that exercise wouldn't help me at all, and that I had to drastically lower my calorie intake. I was already limited to 1200 calories per day, which is what most diets, nutritionists, and doctors recommend. Going below 1200 calories is dangerous because your body can go into "starvation mode". To suggest to me, a slightly overweight person, that exercise was irrelevant and I should eat fewer calories was callous and dangerous advice. He also suggested to me that I might have psychological issues because I didn't want a scale in my house. I track my weight using body measurements, because scales tend to demotivate me when I'm struggling with diet changes: body weight fluctuates so much!. I have since lost those 15 pounds, by the way, by using exercise and myfitnesspal.com to track my food intake. It is basic math. Calories in is less than calories expended then you lose weight. Which INCLUDES exercise, and for me, fewer processed foods. It was a very bizarre experience, and I would not recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Evans really takes his time to listen to you and does and in depth interview of the problem. He, in my opinion, is a more conservative practitioner which is what I want. I don't like jumping on the bandwagon of every new drug out there, when other avenues are available. We really talk about the options and make a joint decision on how to proceed. He does smaller procedures in his office instead of farming them out so that you would have to wait for another practitioner to take care of you and I appreciate that. I like his beside manner and as a nurse, I know difficult physicians, Dr. Evans is a very good doctor.

We were told by my partner's friends that Dr. Wren was a good person to see about such matters. Apparently they have had different situations than ours. We have a high deductible insurance, about $5,000. Of course we are both young and healthy so it hasn't seemed necessary to pay upwards of $300/month to see a doctor once every five years... live and learn. Anyway, we both take off work to make this appointment. My partner is excited to have an ultrasound to see the baby. Of course, Dr Wren can't afford to buy an ultrasound machine so she can't get one. What did we get, you ask? Well a half an hour of being pigeonholed into a database by a nurse, then another half an hour of being asked the same information over again by the doctor. What did we learn? Smoking is bad for babies, drinking is bad for babies, ibuprofen is bad for babies, drinking water is good for babies, stretching is good for babies, Google is just as informative about babies as this OB/GYN. What is the difference between our visit and a Google search? An hour with Google is nearly free, and hour at Dr. Wren set us back $537.
