When I called the next morning, he already had the key and was ready to go. He asked me what happened and then sent me an itemized list of the issues and prices right away He took care of a huge repair in two days. I had my transmission and brake fluid changed last week at another mechanic near where I live. The day after, they went on vacation for two weeks. And I started to notice a weird smell in my car. I changed my cabin air filter. Still a weird chemical smell. Reminded me of gas fumes. I couldn't pin point the source for a couple days. Finally I found the source of the smell - the fumes were coming from near the engine block and being sucked into the cabin through the air intake... And it got more and more noticeable. Driving in to work today, the smell was strong, and I was freaked out - convinced that my car might blow up at any second. Rolled windows down and crossed my fingers. It was early in the morning. I was already in Redwood City. I had no idea where to take my car...and I had an appointment at 8:30am and most places weren't even open til 8:30...Then I remembered YAO! His spot is two blocks from my office... I stopped in early before they even officially opened. Yao was luckily there, quickly came over after I parked, listened to my concerns, and started sniffing around. "No gas smell," he said. He sniffed around some more at my urging. Finally he says, "Oh, I smell it. But not fuel. It smells like gear oil." He lets me sniff a bottle of gear oil. Bingo. That's the smell. "I'll check for a leak." He puts my car up on the lift and checks under the car. "No leaking. I don't know where it's coming from," he says. "Okay, so the car won't blow up?" "No. It's fine. You should take it back to the other shop to have them look. Maybe they put in too much transmission fluid. Not sure. Have them look." "Great, thanks." "Yeah, no problem," he smiled and waved and started to walk away. "Wait, do I owe you anything for the diagnostic?" I asked. "No, no. No problem," said Yao. And bam. We stopped by this place on a time budget and just asked how long it would take for a smog check and the nice man working said pull it in it'll only take 15 minutes. He was done in 15 minutes max, submitted the smog certificate report to the DMV automatically and sent us on our way. No hassle at all! The smog check was $58 for my Mom's Mercedes GL. Some mechanics would even go to the extreme when they would cut you fan belt just because they get $10. commission for every fan belt they could replace (coming from friend who used to work as a service tech from a well know oil change franchise). Very fast and quality work, flexible schedule and reasonable price. We have had all our three cars repaired with Mr.Yao for years. The repair work and maintenance with him often cost much less than other place. Last year, my Subaru had an electrical problem. I tried several auto stores, they said the electrical problem was pretty complicated and they would need another several hours to diagnose it which would be thousands of dollars. I am picky about where I take my car, and always on the paranoid side about having to have any repairs done on my car. Yao Auto Shop is really the best. I took my C230 Mercedes Benz and Toyota Sequoia here over the last two years. Yao run a class act, and so nice, so friendly. I've stopped by for smog check and next thing you know, I had Yao service my car and wife car. I stopped by without an appointment and he was able to fix my car in a very timely manner. One part had to be ordered but it was here the next morning.
