Puerto Rico Latin Bar & Grill - Pernil w/ Mofongo

The restaurant is a very good size with lots of room and tables available. The decor is that of PR culture which is very colorful and bright. We started off with canoa which is a plantain stuffed with ground beef and cheese. It was very hot and delicious! For our "platos principals" (main entrees) I had the pechuga de pollo (chicken breast with grilled onions) with mofongo as my side (also comes with a side salad). It was very tasty and not dry at all. BFF had the pernil (pulled pork) with arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) as his side which also came with a side salad. For dessert we shared the tembleque which is a coconut pudding but not in the traditional sense of pudding (more like a jelly texture). BFF also ordered coquito (holiday rum drink) & apparently our server (Sophia) omitted the rum so the owner came by and offered a fresh glass. Speaking of, everything was wonderful except that Sophia seemed to have a bit of a poor attitude as she wasn't too friendly. I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt as perhaps she wasn't feeling well but out of the corner of my eye she had this almost "eyeroll" look. Perhaps she just didn't want to be there (she was friendly upon us leaving and thanked us). Anyway, I highly recommend this establishment. Both food and ambience was great and the service was too.

We noticed on the map that there was a Cuban restaurant a mile away so we had to go! It's in a relatively abandoned strip mall and If you drive too fast you could miss it, I'm not sure you can even see it from the street, you kind of have to know it's there and MAN do people know!!!' By the time we left it was hopping! Lots of regulars you could tell. Staff was very nice, restroom clean and well stocked. Ambiance? Cute island minimalism! FOOD Had to start with the empanadas which were soo good and great flavor in the meat, I LOVE Cuban sandwiches but have failed to find a halfway decent one in Arizona. When we were in Miami and Key West I ate my weight in Cuban sandwiches so that's my gold standard! This one is just as good if not better! Advised it was big but we each ordered one anyway and big is an understatement they were huge! Roasted pork delicious and juicy, ham and Swiss. Just the right about of mustard not to overpower it and the right amount of pickles to also enhance but not overpower the flavor. The Cuban bread DELICIOUS! For 12 dollars it was two meals and a small snack for me. I'd say that's a heck of a deal ! We are already planning a trip out west to go back !

I have never tasted a curry chicken quite like theirs, and now I have a craving for more! We had quite a few questions, so the chef came out and personally helped us out. The service is a tad slow because they make everything to order, so plan on a nice relaxed meal - the food is worth it! I would definitely recommend you try this place. And - if you want a nice SPICY jerk chicken or pork this is your place!!

The woman kept checking on me, and I actually liked that the cook brings out the food that's a nice personal touch you don't see everywhere. That said, the portions were underwhelming. I understand it leans more toward a dine-in experience, but the oxtail serving felt small. The presentation almost plays tricks on you it comes on a large plate with separate bowls for the sides, which makes it look like more than it actually is. On top of that, having to choose between cabbage or plantains felt a bit limiting for sides. The rice was a little dry and slightly hard for my taste, but I will say the plantains were really good sweet and done right. I couldn't help but compare it to another Caribbean spot I recently tried in Glendale, where the portions were generous and the oxtail was big, tender, and full of flavor. Here, the flavor was good, but it didn't stand out. I've definitely had better, so my expectations were a bit higher. Overall, it's not a bad spot it just feels pricey for what you get. I spent around $60 total: two cocktails at $15 each, plus the oxtail at market price (which can run $30-$40). The biggest plus is convenience it's close to home, so it's an easy option when I'm craving Jamaican food. But if I'm being honest... next time, I might still find myself making that drive back out to Glendale.
