Great Vietnamese coffee. Clean, bright space. So nice to find a local coffee shop just a block from the bustle of King St.

With the plethora of amazing dining options in the area for food, Pitango serves as the perfect post-meal treat. Or if you're like me, gelato is good any time of day and for any occasion. Plenty of seating inside with outlets nearby. Staff are courteous and kind. They allow you try as many flavors as you want. A combination of 20 staple and rotating flavors, there's really something for everyone. We eventually opted for two flavors, the strawberry and orange dark chocolate. Absolutely delicious. The flavors are bold and the gelato itself is creamy smooth. The consistency in both was apparent -- they clearly use high quality ingredients. Highly recommend giving them a try. This will be our regular gelato stop whenever we're in Alexandria!

Not because of the flavors, but the ways you can get your sweet treat (like, cone, cup, sundae, etc.) and other various options (like ice cream, sorbet, custard, etc.) I sampled a couple of sorbet flavors and ended up with a small cup of those two flavors. A small cup is two scoops so it was perfect! The flavors were Lemon Lavender and POG (pomegranate, orange, guava). At first I think I liked the lavender best, but as I continued to eat, I think POG stole the show. They were both refreshing and flavorful and I appreciated the blends to give my tastebuds new flavors. Del Ray is such a cute neighborhood too. I sat outside at the tables/benches to eat. If you're planning a visit, their website is pretty slim and doesn't list all the options for getting a sweet treat. I do think it would be helpful for it to include those options. But others have posted pictures of their menu so you can search for that.

The server person was clearly impatient with him but made me a little uncomfortable. I got the "Kit Kat" ice cream sandwich. It came in an Oreo wafer and was chocolate custard and was hard as a rock, plus was bland. I had to go back in and ask if it was actually the right thing, since it was so unrelated to KitKat. The cashier guy said yeah, it is KitKat. I told him it was nasty. It was $7.70 when all was said and done. Don't be back.

I had just finished dinner in Old Town, and wanted some ice cream. Walking around the…read moreneighborhood, there was definitely no shortage of ice cream shops! I spotted Pop's and thought, what could be better. I didn't know 'Pop's' was Ray Giovanni, who started his ice cream business in the '40s. He opened the store on King St. in 1976 - exactly 50 years ago. There was a very large selection of flavors, however, I was told I only get 'one sample taste'. Hmmm, that just made my choice rather easy - as my two favorites are chocolate and coffee. While I would have liked to sample a few others, and may have chosen a different flavor, I was okay with a scoop of chocolate and coffee. It was the first time I was limited to 1 sample taste at an ice cream store. The chocolate had a deep, rich taste, it was excellent. The coffee was also very good, but I was expecting a stronger coffee flavor.

Instead, the guy working behind the counter looked like he would rather be chewing oyster shells than scooping ice cream. I usually let things roll off my back, but this kid hated his job and his life. Never greeted us, never spoke to us, unless it was a clarifying question. Seemed genuinely annoyed and put out when we asked about trying a flavor, to which I almost called him out when she was being nice and patient and placed the scoop on top of the cone with nothing inside the actual cone. No pride or care, just a check mark. At the end of the day, the ice cream saved the experience as it was welcomed and put my frustrations at ease. Rich and creamy with lots of ingredients in each bite, but I think we'll try the Creamery across the street next time we visit Alexandria.
