I got the Kung Pao Chicken lunch special with Wonton soup. I also got a shrimp roll. It was still nice and hot after my 10 minute walk to my hotel. The woman who took my order was very friendly. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the broth for the wonton soup was somewhat bland. Needed some more richness or salt. The wontons were pretty good though. The shrimp roll was hot and crispy. I only registered one shrimp, but there may have been one more. That was good. The kung pao chicken I really enjoyed. It had a good amount of chicken, and some nice char on the veggies. The sauce was really good too, there was more to it than most places, and was actually somewhat spicy. And the entree to rice ratio was pretty even, too. Not overloaded with rice. I'd go back if I'm in that neighborhood again. read more

Typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Food is surprisingly less oily than most nabe Chinese places. Appetizers ======== Shrimp Toast:: B- This is the thick, not the thin shrimp toast. I'd say it's about an inch at its thickest. Nice and crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside. You can taste the ginger, but there's not much shrimp flavor. I think there's too much bread for the amount of shrimp they use. It's one of the least oily shrimp toasts I've ever had (but its still shrimp toast, so it IS oily. Just not tremendously oily.) BBQ Spare Ribs: A- Quite good. On the fatty side (which I like) and not too sweet. Juicy. Crab Rangoon: A- I dig it. Nice starch-to-crab cream ratio. An A+ would be a little more cream, and the cream a little bit more ... "crabby". Fantail Shrimp: A+ You will hate this. It was the most oily, fatty fantail shrimp I've ever had in my life. But I go for stuff like that. It had terrific wonderful oily shrimpy flavor. If you dig this sort of thing, it's an A+. If not, you will be disgusted. Soup ==== Won Ton Soup: B- As a soup, won ton always bores me. Yeah, won tons are cool, but the soup itself is so .. barren and 1 dimensional. There are things you can do to make the soup more interesting, but not this one. The soup is not dynamic at all. The only thing that gives it flavor is salt and scallion, and it could use a lot more scallion. The dumplings are a little starchy because of their thickness. They could use more meat, and the meat could be flavored with things like ginger and garlic a bit more. Egg Drop Soup: B+ A very competent egg drop soup. Hits all the high notes: thick, salty, egg custardy flavor. I've had worse. I'm not entirely sure I've had much better. Hot and Sour: B+ Hot and Sour has gone significantly downhill in NYC since the 80's. It has become a bland soup without typical Hot and Sour Soup ingredients. This one was actually somewhat spicy, thankfully! The ingredients were prepared nicely, but it still exhibited poor ingredients. For example, they used button mushrooms instead of the classic shitake mushroom. Mix Vegetable Soup: B- Won ton soup with broccoli, baby corn, bok choy, green pepper, bamboo shoots, and peapods (and no won ton). Good, but bland and a little salty. Chop Suey ========= Beef Chop Suey: Fried Rice ======== Young Chow Fried Rice: A- Very nice, and not oily as fried rice can get. High quality and well above average the average Chinese greasy spoon. If it had more ingredients and cooked a bit more, it would've been a strong A. Egg Foo Young ============ Roast Pork Egg Foo Young: C+ Over cooked. Burnt in places. The brown sauce is nearly flavorless. The egg foo young itself was bland, too. Could've used more garlic and onion. Moo Shu Dishes ============= Moo Shu Beef: B+ Pretty much the same as all the other moo shu you've had. Meat was soft. Szechuan & Hunan Dishes ===================== Sesame Chicken: B Sweet foods are not my cup of tea, so maybe I shouldn't have rated this. My wife rates it a B+. I thought it was a little too sweet and a tad dry. She was very happy with it. Beef Hunan Style: C+ Good flavor, but the beef was very low quality -- very mealy. Awful texture. The food is great every time, very fresh and tasty. Delivery is always soooo fast (under 30 min) and you get your food hot, as if it was right out the kitchen ! stopped in here late sunday, they are open until 11pm (wooo!) on the way home from LGA airport. definitely needed to get the chinese food fix after a long weekend wedding. they have an extensive chinese american menu, and the inside of the restaurant is super clean with a TV playing on the background. we both ordered something from the combination menu, everything was $7.25-$7.50 and include an entree, egg roll and pork fried rice. i indulged in chicken chow mein. excellent hints of white pepper with lots of fresh cabbage and veggies. the general tsos was also good. the egg rolls were ok as was the fried rice.it was yellow rice vs. white. speed and friendliness of service was great and food came out piping hot, fresh and delicious! read more

Great new place right next door!!! Super clean- this place doesn't need tables. I could eat their general tso's chicken right off of the floor. Actually, the owners/workers could probably spoon-feed my bf his beloved chicken and cashews from the floor-- that's how incredibly clean AND nice these people are. Fried rice was so good, barely a slick of oil (and we're talking PORK here.) Wonton soup was something left to be desired, but everything else makes up for that..delivery was between the 5-10 minute mark (next block over) Every time the bf and I walk in, it's like we've won the largest check ever from Publisher's Clearing House, and we leave with smiles and fresh food (unfortunately sans PCH check...) Tried Xings chef the other day for the first time. I called in an order for pick up. Got some vegetable stir fry with white rice for myself and my boyfriend ordered a sesame chicken combo with pork fried rice. I was very pleased to see how clean this place is inside, I would have to say it's the cleanest Chinese Food place in Astoria that I've personally seen. Worth a try if you're in the neighborhood. American Chinese food at its best. The menu offers the same variety and prices as every other Chinese restaurant in the country, yet the place couldn't be more different. First of all it's immaculately clean and well-decorated. They clearly put the same level of attention to detail and cleanliness in their food as they put into their eating space. The kitchen is visible, as is the food prep, and it's very clean. The food is oh-so-delicious. It's fresh, it's not greasy, and for the first time after eating Chinese in my adult life my innards didn't want to jump out out and die 15 minutes after I finished eating. This is the go-to answer to takeout prayers. Try the General Tso's. Unlike most varieties that are advertised as "spicy," the tangy sauce used in this version achieves a touch of heat without causing discomfort. The broccoli is fresh and crisp. The servings are huge. I've ordered from here consistently for months now, after being recommended from a friend who loves the place. I just called them now from my roommate's cell and they asked for our address (same as always, just a different phone number). First, they say that they don't deliver to us. I state that they've delivered to us numerous times and I'm just using a different phone number. The girl then puts an older lady on the phone to ask for my address AGAIN. I state it AGAIN and she says that they don't deliver to us. I tell them that's impossible because they've delivered to us! Then she proceeds to tell me actually it's so busy right now, the wait is going to be so long, they delivery guy went out to 30th avenue and he's still not back, etc. I'm sorry, why is this MY issue? There's something not right about Xing Chef... I placed my first order a couple months ago because of all the positive reviews. The food was good and the woman I spoke with was friendly and spoke near-perfect English. So I re-ordered two weeks later, including a dish of sesame chicken. This time, the sesame chicken was garbage: soupy, cheap-tasting street meat. I threw out the dish after a few bites. A week or two later, I decided to give this place one last try, hoping that the last order was a fluke. I called in, and this time, the woman who picked up the phone barely spoke English, and argued with me over whether or not I had previously placed an order. After two minutes, I said "good night" and hung up the phone, without even placing an order. read more
